Understanding the interfacial interactions between the nanofiller and polymer matrix is important to improve the design and manufacture of polymer nanocomposites. This paper reports a molecular dynamic Study on the interfacial interactions and structure of a clay-based polyurethane intercalated nanocomposite. The results show that the intercalation of surfactant (i.e. dioctadecyldlmethyl ammonium) and polyurethane (PU) into the nanoconfined gallery of clay leads to the multilayer structure for both surfactant and PU, and the absence of phase separation for PU chains. Such structural characteristics are attributed to the result of competitive interactions among the surfactant, PU and the clay surface, including van der Waals, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding.

Nanocrystalline zirconia was synthesized and used as catalyst support for methanol synthesis. The nanocrystallite particles have new physical and textural properties which are critical in determining the catalytic performance. Nanocrystalline zirconia changes the electronic structure and affects the metal and support interactions on the catalyst. leading to facile reduction. intimate interaction between copper and zirconia, more corner defects and oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalyst. All these changes are beneficial to the reaction of methanol synthesis from hydrogenation of CO2. As a result. higher conversion of CO2 and selectivity of methanol are achieved compared to the catalysts prepared by conventional co-precipitation method. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hydrogen storage in traditional metallic hydrides can deliver about 1.5 to 2.0 wt pct hydrogen but magnesium hydrides can achieve more than 7 wt pct. However, these systems suffer from high temperature release drawback and chemical instability problems. Recently, big improvements of reducing temperature and increasing kinetics of hydrogenation have been made in nanostructured Mg-based composites. This paper aims to provide an overview of the science and engineering of Mg materials and their nanosized composites with nanostructured carbon for hydrogen storage. The needs in research including preparation of the materials, processing and characterisation and basic mechanisms will be explored. The preliminary experimental results indicated a promising future for chemically stable hydrogen storage using carbon nanotubes modified metal hydrides under lower temperatures.

Ordered mesoporous carbon CMK-5 was comprehensively tested for the first time as electrode materials in lithium ion battery. The surface morphology, pore structure and crystal structure were investigated by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM), N-2 adsorption technique and X-ray diffraction (XRD) respectively. Electrochemical properties of CMK-5 were studied by galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry, and compared with conventional anode material graphite. Results showed that the reversible capacity of CMK-5 was 525 mAh/g at the third charge-discharge cycle and that CMK-5 was more compatible for quick charge-discharge cycling because of its special mesoporous structure. Of special interest was that the CMK-5 gave no peak on its positive sweep of the cyclic voltammetry, which was different from all the other known anode materials. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and XRD were also applied to investigate the charge-discharge characteristics of CMK-5.

To describe single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) arrays, we propose a self-similar array model. For isolated SWNT bundles, the self-similar array model is consistent with the classical triangular array model; for SWNT bundle arrays, it can present hierarchy structures and specify different array configurations. Based on this self-similar array model, we calculated the energetics of SWNT arrays, investigated the driving force for the formation of macroscopic SWNT arrays, and briefly discussed the hierarchy structures in real macroscopic SWNT arrays. Over the past 12 months, developments in both porous and non-porous materials for the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) should lead to significantly increased stack lifetimes. Lithium-sodium carbonate is emerging as the material of choice for the electrolyte and has been tested in a 10 kW scale stack. Several new cathode materials, with lower dissolution rates in the electrolyte than state-of-the-art NiO, have been tested. However a significant finding is that the dissolution rate of NiO can also be reduced by an order of magnitude by preparing it as a functional nanomaterial. Although most developers continue to use nickel anodes, recent tests with ceramic oxides anodes open up the prospects of reduced carbon deposition and future cells running directly on dry methane. Coal fired power generation will continue to provide energy to the world for the foreseeable future. However, this energy use is a significant contributor to increased atmospheric CO2 concentration and, hence, global warming. Capture and disposal Of CO2 has received increased R&D attention in the last decade as the technology promises to be the most cost effective for large scale reductions in CO2 emissions. This paper addresses CO2 transport via pipeline from capture site to disposal site, in terms of system optimization, energy efficiency and overall economics. Technically, CO2 can be transported through pipelines in the form of a gas, a supercritical. fluid or in the subcooled liquid state. Operationally, most CO2 pipelines used for enhanced oil recovery transport CO2 as a supercritical fluid. In this paper, supercritical fluid and subcooled liquid transport are examined and compared, including their impacts on energy efficiency and cost. Using a commercially available process simulator, ASPEN PLUS 10.1, the results show that subcooled liquid transport maximizes the energy efficiency and minimizes the Cost Of CO2 transport over long distances under both isothermal and adiabatic conditions. Pipeline transport of subcooled liquid CO2 can be ideally used in areas of cold climate or by burying and insulating the pipeline. In very warm climates, periodic refrigeration to cool the CO2 below its critical point of 31.1 degrees C, may prove economical. Simulations have been used to determine the maximum safe pipeline distances to subsequent booster stations as a function of inlet pressure, environmental temperature and ground level heat flux conditions. The non-linear motions of a gyrostat with an axisymmetrical, fluid-filled cavity are investigated. The cavity is considered to be completely filled with an ideal incompressible liquid performing uniform rotational motion. Helmholtz theorem, Euler's angular momentum theorem and Poisson equations are used to develop the disturbed Hamiltonian equations of the motions of the liquid-filled gyrostat subjected to small perturbing moments. The equations are established in terms of a set of canonical variables comprised of Euler angles and the conjugate angular momenta in order to facilitate the application of the Melnikov-Holmes-Marsden (MHM) method to investigate homoclinic/heteroclinic transversal intersections. In such a way, a criterion for the onset of chaotic oscillations is formulated for liquid-filled gyrostats with ellipsoidal and torus-shaped cavities and the results are confirmed via numerical simulations. Melnikov's method is used to analytically predict the onset of chaotic instability in a rotating body with internal energy dissipation. The model has been found to exhibit chaotic instability when a harmonic disturbance torque is applied to the system for a range of forcing amplitude and frequency. Such a model may be considered to be representative of the dynamical behavior of a number of physical systems such as a spinning spacecraft. In spacecraft, disturbance torques may arise under malfunction of the control system, from an unbalanced rotor, from vibrations in appendages or from orbital variations. Chaotic instabilities arising from such disturbances could introduce uncertainties and irregularities into the motion of the multibody system and consequently could have disastrous effects on its intended operation. A comprehensive stability analysis is performed and regions of nonlinear behavior are identified. Subsequently, the closed form analytical solution for the unperturbed system is obtained in order to identify homoclinic orbits. Melnikov's method is then applied on the system once transformed into Hamiltonian form. The resulting analytical criterion for the onset of chaotic instability is obtained in terms of critical system parameters. The sufficient criterion is shown to be a useful predictor of the phenomenon via comparisons with numerical results. Finally, for the purposes of providing a complete, self-contained investigation of this fundamental system, the control of chaotic instability is demonstated using Lyapunov's method.

An algorithm for suppressing the chaotic oscillations in non-linear dynamical systems with singular Jacobian matrices is developed using a linear feedback control law based upon the Lyapunov-Krasovskii (LK) method. It appears that the LK method can serve effectively as a generalised method for the suppression of chaotic oscillations for a wide range of systems. Based on this method, the resulting conditions for undisturbed motions to be locally or globally stable are sufficient and conservative. The generalized Lorenz system and disturbed gyrostat equations are exemplified for the validation of the proposed feedback control rule. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The occurrence of chaotic instabilities is investigated in the swing motion of a dragline bucket during operation cycles. A dragline is a large, powerful, rotating multibody system utilised in the mining industry for removal of overburden. A simplified representative model of the dragline is developed in the form of a fundamental non-linear rotating multibody system with energy dissipation. An analytical predictive criterion for the onset of chaotic instability is then obtained in terms of critical system parameters using Melnikov's method. The model is shown to exhibit chaotic instability due to a harmonic slew torque for a range of amplitudes and frequencies. These chaotic instabilities could introduce irregularities into the motion of the dragline system, rendering the system difficult to control by the operator and/or would have undesirable effects on dragline productivity and fatigue lifetime. The sufficient analytical criterion for the onset of chaotic instability is shown to be a useful predictor of the phenomenon under steady and unsteady slewing conditions via comparisons with numerical results. This article provides a review of the recent theory of transport in nanopores developed in the author's laboratory. In particular the influence of fluid-solid interactions on the transport coefficient is examined, showing that such interactions reduce the value of the coefficient by almost an order of magnitude in comparison to the Knudsen theory for non-interacting systems. The activation energy and potential energy barriers for diffusion in smooth pores with a one-dimensional potential energy profile are also discussed, indicating the inadequacy of the commonly used assumption of proportionality between the activation energy and heat of adsorption or the minimum pore potential energy. A further feature affected by fluid-solid interactions is the nature of the reflection of fluid molecules colliding with a pore wall surface, varying from being nearly specular - such as in carbon nanotubes - to nearly diffuse for amorphous solids. Diffuse reflection leads to momentum loss and reduced transport coefficients. However, fluid-solid interactions do not affect the transport coefficient in the single-file diffusion regime when the surface reflection is diffuse, and the transport coefficient in this case is largely independent of the adsorbed density.
