Previous research has examined the relationship between the Modern Sexism Scale (Swim, Aikin, Hall & Hunter, 1995) and the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI; Glick & Fiske, 1996) or the relationship between the Modern Sexism Scale and the Neosexism Scale (Campbell, Schellenberg, & Senn, 1997; Tougas, Brown, Beaten, & Joly, 1995). The present study examined the relationship between the ASI and the Neosexism Scale. Across three samples (N = 907), neosexism was found to be associated primarily with the hostile rather than the benevolent component of ambivalent sexism. Hostile sexism, benevolent sexism, and neosexism were all significantly associated with attitudes toward lesbians' and gay men's rights, and both hostile sexism and neosexism were significantly associated with attitudes toward women's rights. Neosexism and hostile sexism were negatively associated with a humanitarian-egalitarian orientation, whereas benevolent sexism was positively associated with a Protestant-ethic orientation. It is concluded that, although both the Neosexism Scale and ASI measure contemporary sexism, only the Benevolent Sexism subscale of the ASI taps the subjectively positive side of contemporary sexism.

An increased degree of utilization of the potential N-glycosylation site In the fourth repeat unit of the human tau protein may be involved in the inability of tau to bind to the corresponding tubulin sequence(s) and in the subsequent development of the paired helical filaments of Alzheimer's disease. To model these processes, we synthesized the octadecapeptide spanning this region without sugar, and with the addition of an N-acetyl-glucosamine moiety. The carbohydrate-protected, glycosylated asparagine was incorporated as a building block during conventional Fmoc-solid phase peptide synthesis. While the crude non-glycosylated analog was obtained as a single peptide, two peptides with, the identical, expected masses, in approximately equal amounts, were detected after the cleavage of the peracetylated glycopeptide. Surprisingly, the two glycopeptides switched positions on the reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatogram after removal of the sugar-protecting acetyl groups. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and peptide sequencing identified the more hydrophobic deprotected peak as the target peptide, and the more hydrophilic deprotected peak as a peptide analog in which the aspartic acid-bond just preceding the glycosylated asparagine residue was isomerized resulting in the formation of a beta-peptide. The anomalous chromatographic behavior of the acetylated beta-isomer could be explained on the basis of the generation of an extended hydrophobic surface which is not present in any of the other three glycopeptide variants. Repetition of the syntheses, with altered conditions and reagents, revealed reproducibly high levels of aspartic acid-bond isomerization of the glycopeptide as well as lack of isomerization for the non-glycosylated parent analog. If similar increased aspartic acid-bond isomerization occurs in vivo, a protein modification well known to take place for both the amyloid deposits and the neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease, this process may explain the aggregation of glycosylated tau into the paired helical filaments in the affected brains. We study some challenging presentations which arise as groups of deficiency zero. In four cases we settle finiteness: we show that two presentations are for finite groups while two are fur infinite groups. Thus we answer three explicit questions in the literature and we provide the first published deficiency zero presentation for a group with derived length seven. The tools we use are coset enumeration and Knuth-Bendix rewriting, which are well-established as methods for proving finiteness or otherwise of a finitely presented group. We briefly comment on their capabilities and compare their performance.

The graded-fermion algebra and quasispin formalism are introduced and applied to obtain the gl(m\n)down arrow osp(m\n) branching rules for the two- column tensor irreducible representations of gl(m\n), for the case m less than or equal to n(n > 2). In the case m < n, all such irreducible representations of gl(m\n) are shown to be completely reducible as representations of osp(m\n). This is also shown to be true for the case m=n, except for the spin-singlet representations, which contain an indecomposable representation of osp(m\n) with composition length 3. This paper describes the ocular morphology of young adults of the southern hemisphere lamprey Geotria australis, the sole representative of the Geotriidae, and makes comparisons with those of holarctic lampreys (Petromyzontidae). As previously reported for the holarctic lamprey Ichthyomyzon unicuspis [Collin and Fritzsch, 1993], the lens of G. australis is non-spherical and possesses a cone-shaped posterior that may be capable of mediating variable focus. The avascular retina of G. australis is well differentiated, containing three retinal ganglion cell populations, three layers of horizontal cells and three photoreceptor types, in contrast to petromyzontids that contain only two photoreceptor types (short and long), G. australis possesses one rod-like (R1) and two cone-like (C1 and C2) photoreceptors. Although the rodlike receptor in G. australis may be homologous with the short receptors of holarctic lampreys, the two cone-like receptors have morphological characteristics that differ markedly from those of the long receptors of their holarctic counterparts. The features which distinguish the two cone-like receptors from those of the long receptor type in holarctic lampreys are the characteristics of the mitochondria and the presence of large amounts of two different types of stored secretory material in the endoplasmic reticulum of the myoid (refractile bodies). The endoplasmic reticulum of each receptor type has a different shape and staining profile and is polymorphic, each showing a continuum of distension. It is proposed that the presence of two cone-like photoreceptors with different characteristics would increase the spectral range of G. australis and thus be of value during the parasitic phase, when this lamprey lives in the surface marine waters. The irideal flap, present in G. australis but not petromyzontids, would assist in reducing intraocular flare during life in surface waters. The results of this study, which are discussed in the context of the proposed evolution of lampreys, emphasise that it is important to take into account the characteristics of the eyes of southern hemisphere lampreys when making generalizations about the eyes of lampreys as a whole.

The aim of this research was to examine, from a stress and coping perspective, the effects of resources (both personal and environmental) and coping strategies on parental reactions to infant death. One hundred and twenty-seven parents (60 fathers, 67 mothers) participated in the study. The predictors of parental distress (background factors, resources, coping methods) were initially assessed at 4-6 weeks post-loss. Parental distress (assessed using a composite measure of psychiatric disturbance, physical symptoms, and perinatal grief) was further assessed at 6 months post-loss and at 15 months postloss. After control for the stability in adjustment across time, there was consistent evidence that higher levels of education were associated with lower levels of parental distress over time. Among mothers, the number of friends in whom mothers had the confidence to confide emerged as a positive predictor of adjustment to infant death. A reliance on problem-focused coping was associated with greater maternal distress at 6 months post-loss, whereas coping by seeking support was associated with less distress at 15 months post-loss. There is no evidence that background factors and resources influenced parental distress through coping.

Two Gram-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming, strictly aerobic, pigmented cocci, strains Ben 107(T) and Ben 108(T), growing in aggregates were isolated from activated sludge samples by micromanipulation. Both possessed the rare type A3 gamma' peptidoglycan. Major menaquinones of strain Ben 107(T) were MK-9(H-4) and MK-7(H-2), and the main cellular fatty acid was 12-methyltetradecanoic acid (ai-C-15:0). In strain Ben 108(T), MK-9(H-4), MK-9(H-2) and MK-7(H-4) were the menaquinones and again the main fatty acid was 12-methyltetradecanoic acid (ai-C-15:0). Polar lipids in both strains consisted of phosphatidyl inositol, phosphatidyl glycerol and diphosphatidyl glycerol with two other unidentified glycolipids and phospholipids also present in both. These data, together with the 16S rDNA sequence data, suggest that strain Ben 107(T) belongs to the genus Friedmanniella which presently includes a single recently described species, Friedmanniella antarctica. Although the taxonomic status of strain Ben 108(T) is far less certain, on the basis of its 16S rRNA sequence it is also adjudged to be best placed in the genus Friedmanniella, The chemotaxonomic characteristics and DNA-DNA hybridization data support the view that Ben 107(T) and Ben 108(T) are novel species of the genus Friedmanniella. Hence, it is proposed that strain Ben 107(T) (=ACM 5121(T)) is named as Friedmanniella spumicola sp. nov. and strain Ben 108(T) (=ACM 5120(T)) as Friedmanniella capsulata sp. nov.

A new species of the genus Gluconacetobacter, for which the name Gluconacetobacter sacchari sp. nov. is proposed, was isolated from the leaf sheath of sugar cane and from the pink sugar-cane mealy bug, Saccharicoccus sacchari, found on sugar cane growing in Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia, The nearest phylogenetic relatives in the alpha-subclass of the Proteobacteria are Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens and Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, which have 98.8-99.3% and 97.9-98.5% 16S rDNA sequence similarity, respectively, to members of Gluconacetobacter sacchari. On the basis of the phylogenetic positioning of the strains, DNA reassociation studies, phenotypic tests and the presence of the Q10 ubiquinone, this new species was assigned to the genus Gluconacetobacter. No single phenotypic characteristic is unique to the species, but the species can be differentiated phenotypically from closely related members of the acetic acid bacteria by growth in the presence of 0.01% malachite green, growth on 30% glucose, an inability to fix nitrogen and an inability to grow with the L-amino acids asparagine, glycine, glutamine, threonine and tryptophan when D-mannitol was supplied as the sole carbon and energy source. The type strain of this species is strain SRI 1794(T) (= DSM 12717(T)).

Catalytic conversion of N2O to N-2 With potassium catalysts supported on activated carbon (K/AC) was investigated. Potassium proves to be much more active and stable than either copper or cobalt because potassium possesses strong abilities both for N2O chemisorption and oxygen transfer. Potassium redispersion is found to play a critical role in influencing the catalyst stability. A detailed study of the reaction mechanism was conducted based upon three different catalyst loadings. It was found that during temperature-programmed reaction (TPR), the negative oxygen balance at low temperatures (< 50 degrees C) is due to the oxidation of the external surface of potassium oxide particles, while the bulk oxidation accounts for the oxygen accumulation at higher temperatures (below ca. 270 degrees C). N2O is beneficial for the removal of carbon-oxygen complexes because of the formation of CO2 instead of CO and because of its role in making the chemisorption of produced CO2 on potassium oxide particles less stable. A conceptual three-zone model was proposed to clarify the reaction mechanism over K/AC catalysts. CO2 chemisorption at 250 degrees C proves to be an effective measurement of potassium dispersion. The integral of the Wigner function over a subregion of the phase space of a quantum system may be less than zero or greater than one. It is shown that for systems with 1 degree of freedom, the problem of determining the best possible upper and lower bounds on such an integral, over an possible states, reduces to the problem of finding the greatest and least eigenvalues of a Hermitian operator corresponding to the subregion. The problem is solved exactly in the case of an arbitrary elliptical region. These bounds provide checks on experimentally measured quasiprobability distributions.

We demonstrate a three-dimensional scanning probe microscope in which the extremely soft spring of an optical tweezers trap is used. Feedback control of the instrument based on backscattered light levels allows three-dimensional imaging of microscopic samples in an aqueous environment. Preliminary results with a 2-mu m-diameter spherical probe indicate that features of approximately 200 nm can be resolved, with a sensitivity of 5 nm in the height measurement. The theoretical resolution is limited by the probe dimensions. (C) 1999 Optical Society of America.

Primary olfactory neurons project their axons to the olfactory bulb, where they terminate in discrete loci called glomeruli. All neurons expressing the same odorant receptor appear to terminate in a few glomeruli in each olfactory bulb. In the P2-IRES-tau-LacZ line of transgenic mice, LacZ is expressed in the perikarya and axons of primary olfactory neurons that express the P2 odorant receptor. In the present study, we examined the developmental appearance of P2 neurons, the topographical targeting of P2 axons, as well as the formation of P2 glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. P2 axons were first detected in the olfactory nerve fiber layer at embryonic day 14.5 (E14.5), and by E15.5 these axons terminated in a broad locus in the presumptive glomerular layer. During the next 5 embryonic days, the elongated cluster of axons developed into discrete glomerulus-like structures. In many cases, glomeruli appeared as pairs, which were initially connected by a fascicle of P2 axons. This connection was lost by postnatal day 7.5, and double glomeruli at the same locus were observed in 85% of adult animals. During the early postnatal period, there was considerable mistargeting of P2 axons. In some cases P2 axons entered inappropriate glomeruli or continued to grow past the glomerular layer into the deeper layers of the olfactory bulb. These aberrant axons were not observed in adult animals. These results indicate that olfactory axons exhibit errors while converging onto a specific glomerulus and suggest that guidance cues may be diffusely distributed at target sites in the olfactory bulb.

The bis(mu-hydroxo) complex [Cu-2(Me-2[9]aneN(2)S)(2)(OH)(2)](PF6)(2) (Me-2[9]aneN(2)S = N,N'-dimethyl-1-thia-4,7-diazacyclononane) results after reaction of [Cu(Me-2[9]aneN(2)S)(MeCN)] (PF6) with dioxygen at -78 degrees C in acetonitrile. The complex has been characterized by X-ray crystallography: orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a 18.710(3), b 16.758(2), c 9.593(2) Angstrom, and Z = 4. The structure refined to a final R value of 0.051. The complex contains two copper(II) ions bridged by two hydroxo groups with Cu ... Cu 2.866(1) Angstrom. The solid-state magnetic susceptibility study reveals ferromagnetic coupling, the fitting parameters being J = +46+/-5 cm(-1), g = 2.01+/-0.01 and theta = -0.58+/-0.03 K. The frozen-solution e.p.r. spectrum in dimethyl sulfoxide is characteristic of a monomeric copper(II) ion (g(parallel to) 2.300, g(perpendicular to) 2.063; A(parallel to) 156.2 x 10(-4) cm(-1), A(perpendicular to) 9.0 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) with an N2O2 donor set. Thioether coordination to the copper(II) in solution is supported by the presence of an intense absorption assigned to a sigma(S)-->Cu-II LMCT transition at c. 34000 cm(-1). The single-crystal spectrum of [Cu-2(Me-2[9]aneN(2)S)(2)(OH)(2)] (PF6)(2) (273 K) reveals d-->d transitions at 14500 and 18300 cm(-1) and a weak pi(S)-->Cu-II charge-transfer band at approximately 25000 cm(-1).

The macrocyclic cobalt hexaamines [Co(trans-diammac)](3+) and [Co(cis-diammac)](3+) (diammac = 6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine) are capable of reducing the overpotential for hydrogen evolution on a mercury cathode in aqueous solution. Protons are reduced in a catalytic process involving reoxidation of the Co-II species to its parent Co-III complex. The cycle is robust at neutral pH with no decomposition of catalyst. The stability of the [Co(trans-diammac)](2+) and [Co(cis-diammac)](2+) complexes depends on the pH of the solution and the coordinating properties of the supporting electrolyte. Electrochemical studies indicate that the adsorbed Co-II complex on the surface of mercury is the active catalyst for the reduction of protons to dihydrogen.
