This paper describes two algorithms for adaptive power and bit allocations in a multiple input multiple output multiple-carrier code division multiple access (MIMO MC-CDMA) system. The first is the greedy algorithm, which has already been presented in the literature. The other one, which is proposed by the authors, is based on the use of the Lagrange multiplier method. The performances of the two algorithms are compared via Monte Carlo simulations. At present stage, the simulations are restricted to a single user MIMO MC-CDMA system, which is equivalent to a MIMO OFDM system. It is assumed that the system operates in a frequency selective fading environment. The transmitter has a partial knowledge of the channel whose properties are measured at the receiver. The use of the two algorithms results in similar system performances. The advantage of the Lagrange algorithm is that is much faster than the greedy algorithm. ©2005 IEEE

Professional computing employment in Australia, as in most advanced economies, is highly sex segregated, reflecting well-rehearsed ideas about the masculinity of technology and computing culture. In this paper we are concerned with the processes of work organisation that sustain and reproduce this gendered occupational distribution, focusing in particular on differences and similarities in working-time arrangements between public and private sectors in the Australian context. While information technology companies are often highly competitive workplaces with individualised working arrangements, computing professionals work in a wide range of organisations with different regulatory histories and practices. Our goal is to investigate the implications of these variations for gender equity outcomes, using the public/private divide as indicative of different regulatory frameworks. We draw on Australian census data and a series of organisational case studies to compare working-time arrangements in professional computing employment across sectors, and to examine the various ways employees adapt and respond. Our analysis identifies a stronger ‘long hours culture’ in the private sector, but also underlines the rarity of part-time work in both sectors, and suggests that men and women tend to respond in different ways to these constraints. Although the findings highlight the importance of regulatory frameworks, the organisation of working time across sectors appears to be sustaining rather than challenging gender inequalities in computing employment.

Titanium containing wormhole-like mesoporous silicas, denoted Ti-HMS, synthesized both via the hydrothermal synthesis route and the post synthesis grafting technique, known as molecular designed dispersion, have been successfully applied in the gas phase oxidation of Toluene to CO and CO2. Selectivity towards CO2 for all catalysts, at temperatures between 400-600degreesC, was above 80%. Benzene and benzaldehyde were observed at temperatures above 450degreesC, but in very low concentrations. The conversion of toluene was shown to increase significantly when the V-TEX/N-MESO ratios were increased from 0.07 to 0.84. No significant difference in catalytic activity was observed for catalysts prepared via the different synthesis techniques. The catalytic activity also depends on the concentration of tetrahedrally coordinated titanium atoms and not on the total concentration of titanium in the catalyst.

The current experiment focuses on the roles of social identity and social comparison in perceptions of procedural justice. Participants are randomly allocated to conditions in a 2 (whether the participant has the opportunity to voice an opinion), X 2 (whether the comparison other has the opportunity to voice an opinion), X 2 (whether the comparison other is an ingroup or an outgroup member), between subjects design. Participants are then asked to report the extent to which they perceive the procedure they are involved in to be fair. It is predicted that participants will have a strong feeling of procedural unfairness when they are not given an opportunity by the leader to voice their opinion, but learn that their comparison other is given that opportunity. It is also predicted that the feeling of unfairness should be stronger when the comparison other is an outgroup rather than an ingroup member. Additionally, participants receiving a fair treatment may regard the procedure as fair when their outgoup comparison other receives an unfair treatment. Results support these predictions and reveal that how people make judgments of procedural justice through social comparison is qualified by the social identities of the parties involved.
