A novel nucleation apparatus is presented for the production of narrow sized nuclei from various powder and binder liquid combinations. Mono-sized binder liquid droplets are produced by a specially designed mono-disperse droplet generator. The droplet generator is positioned above a conveyor belt, transporting a powder bed through the spray zone of the droplet generator. By nucleating powder on a conveyer belt, the nucleation mechanism is completely separated from all other granulation mechanisms due to the lack of relative motion between primary particles and/or formed nuclei. Nucleation tests were performed using chalcopyrite and limestone powders with water as the binder liquid. At all operating conditions, the formed nuclei were found to originate from multiplicities of drops that merged on the powder bed surface. Investigation of the dynamics of nuclei formation showed that powder-binder liquid combinations with fast penetration dynamics result in less variation in the number of droplets from which nuclei originate. Smaller and more narrowly distributed nuclei were also achieved by increasing powder speed through the spray zone.

Dimensionless spray flux Ψa is a dimensionless group that characterises the three most important variables in liquid dispersion: flowrate, drop size and powder flux through the spray zone. In this paper, the Poisson distribution was used to generate analytical solutions for the proportion of nuclei formed from single drops (fsingle) and the fraction of the powder surface covered by drops (fcovered) as a function of Ψa. Monte-Carlo simulations were performed to simulate the spray zone and investigate how Ψa, fsingle and fcovered are related. The Monte-Carlo data was an excellent match with analytical solutions of fcovered and fsingle as a function of Ψa. At low Ψa, the proportion of the surface covered by drops (fcovered) was equal to Ψa. As Ψa increases, drop overlap becomes more dominant and the powder surface coverage levels off. The proportion of nuclei formed from single drops (fsingle) falls exponentially with increasing Ψa. In the ranges covered, these results were independent of drop size, number of drops, drop size distribution (mono-sized, bimodal and trimodal distributions), and the uniformity of the spray. Experimental data of nuclei size distributions as a function of spray flux were fitted to the analytical solution for fsingle by defining a cutsize for single drop nuclei. The fitted cutsizes followed the spray drop sizes suggesting that the method is robust and that the cutsize does indicate the transition size between single drop and agglomerate nuclei. This demonstrates that the nuclei distribution is determined by the dimensionless spray flux and the fraction of drop controlled nuclei can be calculated analytically in advance.

Copper concentrate (chalcopyrite) was granulated in a rotating drum with a diameter of 0.3 m and a length of 0.2 m. Water was used as the binder and it was sprayed onto the powder bed with a nozzle. This material exhibited induction type behaviour, which was defined by Iveson and Litster [AIChE J. 44 (1998) 1510]. Induction type behaviour is characterized by the occurrence of an induction stage, during which the granules are gradually being compacted and little or no growth occurs. At the end of this induction stage, binder liquid is squeezed from the interior of the granules onto the granule surface and the granules are then surface-wet. This results in a rapid growth rate of the granules. Different types of experiments were conducted. The influence of the nozzle pressure and the distance from the nozzle to the powder bed on the growth behaviour of the granules as well as on the binder distribution was examined. The results of these experiments led to the postulation of a modified mechanism for induction type behaviour: it was found that after the binder was delivered, there were large granules containing a high amount of binder and small granules containing less binder. During the induction stage, the granules are compacted and binder liquid continuously appears at the surface of the large granules. These wet spots that are continuously being formed pick up the dry and small granules. When all the small granules have been picked up, further expulsion of binder liquid onto the granules' surface results in granules that remain surface-wet. This phenomenon marks the end of the induction stage and it coincides with the disappearance of the small granules. The hypothesis was tested by selectively removing the smaller granules during an experiment. As expected, this resulted in a shorter induction time.

Microencapsulation of lemon oil was undertaken with beta-cyclodextrin using a precipitation method at the five lemon oil to beta-cyclodextrin ratios of 3:97, 6:94, 9:91, 12:88, and 15:85 (w/w) in order to determine the effect of the ratio of lemon oil to beta-cyclodextrin on the inclusion efficiency of beta-cyclodextrin for encapsulating oil volatiles. The retention of lemon oil volatiles reached a maximum at the lemon oil to beta-cyclodextrin ratio of 6:94; however, the maximum inclusion capacity of beta-cyclodextrin and a maximum powder recovery were achieved at the ratio of 12:88, in which the beta-cyclodextrin complex contained 9.68% (w/w) lemon oil. The profile and proportion of selected flavor compounds in the beta-cyclodextrin complex and the starting lemon oil were not significantly different.

The chemistry of copper patination was investigated by two series of experiments. The chemistry of an aqueous copper-sulphate solution was studied at concentrations and pH values near those predicted in an electrolyte on copper exposed to the atmosphere. The electrochemical reactions in an electrolyte in contact with cuprite were investigated in a reaction vessel which used cuprite powder in artificial rainwater to study the electrochemistry of the atmospheric corrosion and patination of copper. Typical sulphate concentrations in rainwater are sufficient to precipitate posnjakite (Cu4SO4(OH)(6)2H(2)O)), a possible precursor to brochantite, within an hour of wetting a cuprite surface. Brochantite (Cu4SO4(OH)(6)), the most commonly found copper salt in natural patinas is responsible for their green appearance. Precipitation of brochantite from the electrolyte resulted from an increase in pH due to the cathodic reduction of oxygen and an increase in cupric ion concentrations by cuprite oxidation. Using tryptophan C-13-enriched at the C-4 (C epsilon(3)) of the indole, the orientation of the C epsilon(3) chemical shift tensor relative to the C epsilon(3)-H dipolar axis was determined from the C-13 chemical shift/C-13-H-1 dipolar 2D NMR powder pattern. The principal values obtained were 208, 137 and 15 ppm with sigma(33) perpendicular to the indole plane, and sigma(11) (least shielded direction) 5 degrees off the C epsilon(3)-H bond toward C xi(3). The side off the C epsilon(3)-H bond was determined by comparing the reduced chemical shift anisotropies obtained by solid-state NMR and from molecular dynamics calculations of [4-C-13] tryptophans in gramicidin A aligned in phospholipid membranes. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation into the fluidized-bed coating of cylindrical metal specimens using two types of thermoplastic powders, Rilsan(R) PA11, a nylon-11 powder produced by Elf Atochem, France and Cotene(TM) 4612, a linear low density polyethylene powder produced by J.R Courtenay (New Zealand). The effects of dipping time, preheat temperature and particle size distribution on coating thickness and surface finish were investigated. Consistent trends in coating thickness growth with dipping time were obtained for both nylon-11 and polyethylene powders with increases in coating thickness with preheat temperature. For the same preheat temperature, the lower melting point of polyethylene results in thicker coatings compared to those of nylon-11. There is a negligible change in the coating thickness for sieved powders compared to that for unsieved powders. A pre-heat temperatures of between 240 degrees C and 300 degrees C is necessary to achieve an acceptable surface finish with both nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. To minimize errors in achieving the desired coating thickness, dipping times shorter than 2 s are not recommended. The use of graphs of coating thickness versus dipping time in combination with the coating surface roughness plots presented in this paper enable the optimal choice of pre-heat temperature and dipping time to achieve acceptable surface finish. Microencapsulation of lemon oil was undertaken by kneading with beta-cyclodextrin, at a beta-cyclodextrin to lemon oil ratio of 88:12 (w/w). The resulting paste samples of the complex were vacuum- or spray-dried. Ten selected lemon oil flavor volatiles (alpha-pinene, sabinene, beta-pinene, beta-myrcene, limonene, gamma-terpinene, terpinolene, linalool, neral, and geranial) in the complex were analyzed periodically after 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 min of kneading time. The results indicated that the levels of these volatiles were not significantly different (P > 0.05) irrespective of mixing time or type of the drying (vacuum- or spray-drying) used. An optimum mixing time was found to be 15 min, at which time the maximum encapsulation of lemon oil (97.7 mg/g of beta-cyclodextrin) was obtained in the complex powder.

TiO2 in anatase crystal phase is a very effective catalyst in the photocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds in water. To improve the recovery rate of TiO2 photocatalysts, which in most cases are in fine powder form, the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method was used to load TiO2 onto a bigger particle support, silica gel. The amount of titania coating was found to depend strongly on the synthesis parameters of carrier gas flow rate and coating time. XPS and nitrogen ads/desorption results showed that most of the TiO2 particles generated from CVD were distributed on the external surface of the support and the coating was stable. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2/silica gel with different amounts of titania were evaluated for the oxidation of phenol aqueous solution and compared with that of Degussa P25. The optimum titania loading rate was found around 6 wt % of the TiO2 bulk concentration. Although the activity of the best TiO2/silica gel sample was still lower than that of P25, the synthesized TiO2/silica gel catalyst can be easily separated from the treated water and was found to maintain its TiO2 content and catalytic activity.

Thirty steers were used in two pen experiments (Expts 1 and 2). and 27 of these in a third (Expt 3), to quantify their responses of hay intake, rumen ammonia nitrogen (RAN) concentrations, and liveweight to inputs of rumen soluble nitrogen (urea) and rumen undegradable protein (formaldehyde-treated casein; F-casein) when added to a basal diet of low quality hays. The hays were made From unimproved native pastures typical of those grazed by cattle in the subtropics of Australia and contained 7.8 g N/kg dry matter (DM) with coefficient of organic matter digestibility of 0.503 in Expts 1 and 2, and 5.2 g N/kg DM with a digestibility range from 0.385 to 0.448 in Expt 3. The steers (15 months old) were either Brahman (B), Hereford (H) or the F-1 Brahman x Hereford (BH) cross. Steers were offered supplementary minerals with the hays in each experiment. In Expt 1 (35 days) urea was sprayed on part of the hay, allowing for daily urea intakes (g/steer) of either 0, 5, 11, 16 or 26. In Expt 2 (42 days), F-casein was offered daily (g/steer) at either 0, 75, 150, 225 or 300 and in Expt 3 (56 days) discrete offerings were made of soluble casein (225 g/day), of urea (18 g/day) + F-casein (225 g/day) or of nil. There were significant linear effects of urea intake upon hay intake and liveweight change of steers. However, B steers had smaller increases in intake and liveweight change than did H steers, and B steers did not have a linear increase in RAN concentrations with increasing urea intake as did H and SH steers. In Expt 2 there were significant linear effects of F-casein supplements on hay intake and liveweight change of steers and a significant improvement in their feed conversion ratio (i.e. DM intake:liveweight change). The B steers did not differ from H and BH steers in liveweight change but had significantly lower hay intakes and non-significantly smaller increases in RAN with increasing F-casein intake. In Expt 3, hay intake of the steers increased with soluble casein (by 16.8 %) and with urea + F-casein (24.5 %). Only steers given urea + F-casein had a high RAN concentration (94 mg/l) and a high liveweight gain. The B steers had a liveweight loss and a lower hay intake than H or BH steers in Expt 3 but a higher RAN concentration. These studies have indicated the importance of the form and quantity of additional N required by cattle of differing breed types to optimize their feed intake and liveweight gain when offered low-N, low-digestible hays.

Despite his significance in early modern Germany, where he was well-known as a political and moral philosopher, jurist, lay-theologian, social and educational reformer, Christian Thomasius (1655-1728) is little known in the world of Anglophone scholarship. 1 Unlike those of his mentor, Samuel Pufendorf, none of Thomasius's works was translated into English, when, at the end of the seventeenth century, English thinkers were searching for a final settlement to the religious question. None has been translated since. Moreover, while Thomasius has been subject to increasing scholarly attention in Germany since the 1970s, where he has been treated largely as a representative of the "early Enlightenment," there is very little secondary literature on him in English. 2 Things are however beginning to change in this regard, with recent research already giving rise to important new Anglophone books and essays. 3 Knud Haakonssen's article on [End Page 595] Thomasius for the new Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy might well be a straw in the wind
