Pooled serum samples from 3802 Australian residents were analyzed for four perfluoroalkylsulfonates, seven perfluoroalkylcarboxylates, and perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA). Serum was collected from men and women of five different age groups and from rural and urban regions in Australia. The highest mean concentration was obtained for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS, 20.8 ng/mL) followed by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 7.6 ng/mL), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS, 6.2 ng/mL), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA, 1.1 ng/mL), and PFOSA (0.71 ng/mL). Additional four PFCs were detected in 5-18 % of the samples at concentrations near the detection limits (0.1-0.5 ng/mL). An increase in PFOS concentration with increasing age in both regions and genders was observed. The male pool levels of some of the age groups compared to females were higher for PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS. In contrast, PFNA concentrations were higher in the female pools. No substantial difference was found in levels of PFCs between the urban and rural regions. The levels are equal or higher than previously reported serum levels in Europe and Asia but lower compared to the U. S. A. These results suggest that emissions from production in the Northern Hemisphere are of less importance for human exposure.

Two experiments were conducted to measure urea recycling and rumen flow dynamics in young rusa deer fed low (LP) or high (HP) protein diets. Pool size and flux rate of labelled urea. into and out of the blood pool were measured using single intravenous (i.v.) injection solutions containing [C-14] - and [N-15]-urea. A curve peeling technique was used to fit the enrichment of N-15 or specific radioactivity (SRA) of C-14 to exponential equations. Body urea-N pool size was significantly greater (P < 0.05) when a HP, compared to a LP diet, was fed. Urea space, expressed as a percent of live weight, total flux rate of urea through the blood pool and the irreversible loss of urea was similar for both diets. The mean (+/- S.E.M.) concentration of plasma urea-N was greater when animals were fed the HP diet compared to the LP diet (2 1.1 +/- 0.3 versus 14.4 +/- 1.4 mg/100 ml, respectively). Voluntary feed intake and digestibility of dietary components were also measured. Daily dry matter intakes were not affected by the crude protein (CP) content of the diet, although apparent DM digestibility was significantly greater for HP diet fed in both experiments. An intraruminal infusion of CrEDTA was used to determine rumen flow dynamics. Ruminal mean retention time, relative net outflow rate of water and passage rate constant (k(w)) were significantly greater (P < 0.05) when the HP diet was fed compared to the LP diet. The extent of urea metabolism and flux rates of urea between the blood and secondary pools appear similar to those previously reported for other ruminants fed diets contrasting in CP content. OBJECTIVE - We examined the associations of physical activity with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and with 2-h postload plasma glucose (2-h PG) in men and women with low, moderate, and high waist circumference. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) study provided data on a population-based cross-sectional sample of 4,108 men and 5,106 women aged >= 25 years without known diabetes or health conditions that could affect physical activity. FPG and 2-h PG were obtained from an oral glucose tolerance test. Self-reported physical activity level was defined according to the current public health guidelines as active (>= 150 min/week across five or more sessions) or inactive (< 150 min/week and/or less than five sessions). Sex-specific quintiles of physical activity time were used to ascertain dose response. RESULTS - Being physically active and total physical activity time were independently and negatively associated with 2-h PG. When physical activity level was considered within each waist circumference category, 2-h PG was significantly lower in active high-waist circumference women (beta-0.30 [95% CI -0.59 to -0.01], P = 0.044) and active low-waist circumference men(beta-0.25 [-0.49 to -0.02],P = 0.036) compared with their inactive counterparts. Considered across physical activity and waist circumference categories, 2-h PG levels were not significantly different between active moderate-waist circumference participants and active low-waist circumference participants. Associations between physical activity and FPG were nonsignificant. CONCLUSIONS - There are important differences between 2-h PG and FPG related to physical activity. It appears that 2-h PG is more sensitive to the beneficial effects of physical activity, and these benefits occur across the waist circumference spectrum.
