The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is frequently used in epidemiological surveys to screen for depression, especially among older adults. This article addresses the problem of non-completion of a short form of the CES-D (CESD-10) in a mailed survey of 73- to 78-year-old women enrolled in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Completers of the CESD-10 had more education, found it easier to manage on available income and reported better physical and mental health. The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scores for non-completers were intermediate between those for women classified as depressed and not depressed using the CESD-10. Indicators of depression had an inverted U-shaped relationship with the number of missing CESD- 10 items and were most frequent for women with two to seven items missing. Future research should pay particular attention to the level of missing data in depression scales and report its potential impact on estimates of depression.

This article examines whether optimism and health-related hardiness contribute to health and well-being among older women. Positive psychological characteristics, including optimism and health-related hardiness, are correlated with good self-rated health, but these variables are all affected by socioeconomic status, social support, physical illness and access to services. Using data from 9501 Australian women aged 73 to 78, we show that optimism and health-related hardiness explain a significant proportion of variance in all subscales of the SF-36, and in stress, even after these confounders are taken into account. The data, although cross-sectional, suggest that positive personal characteristics may contribute to well-being.

Women's magazines in Australia have become increasingly involved in various public health awareness campaigns. In particular, breast cancer has been targeted as an issue for attention. This disease occupies a privileged position in women's magazines, being represented as treatable and survivable with an emphasis on the advocacy of early detection through breast self-examination and screening programs. In this way, women's magazines can be seen to be proactive in serving the public interest of their readers. Information and advice about breast cancer are not limited to medical articles, advice columns and diet pages, but occur, perhaps more accessibly, in feature articles of personal accounts of experiences with breast cancer. This paper looks at coverage of the disease in Australian women's magazines over the last 3 years to see how this role in public health awareness operates. It pays particular attention to illness narratives in feature articles and to stories associated with the magazines' own breast cancer campaigns.

The RAD52 gene is involved in the homologous recombination repair pathway and is a plausible candidate ovarian cancer predisposition gene. We undertook a case-control comparison of 508 epithelial ovarian cancer cases (91 low malignant potential and 417 invasive) and 298 healthy controls to assess the RAD52 Y415X polymorphism as a risk factor for epithelial ovarian cancer in Australian women. Heterozygote frequencies of 2.6 and 4% were observed among cases and controls, respectively. The risk estimate was 0.55 (95%CI 0.24-1.24), suggesting that the RAD52 Y415X polymorphism is not associated with epithelial ovarian cancer in Australian women. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. This study evaluated the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 antibody in HPV 16-associated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in Australian women. Seroreactivity to HPV 16 L1 virus-like particles was assessed in patients with CIN 2 (n = 169) and CIN 3 (n = 229) lesions previously tested for the presence of HPV DNA. Seropositivity was significantly commoner in women with HPV 16 DNA-positive lesions (98/184) than in women with no HPV DNA in the lesion (15/47) or with HPV of types other than 16 in the lesion (43/167) (P = 0.0004). In addition, seropositivity was observed in 33% (55/169) of women with CIN 2 and 46% (106/229) of women with CIN 3, in keeping with the lower fraction of CIN 2 (57/169) than CIN 3 (127/229) biopsies positive for HPV 16 DNA. HPV 16 seropositivity is most common in women with HPV 16-associated CIN, but many patients with HPV-associated CIN 3 are seronegative, and HPV 16 seropositivity is common in women with CIN associated with other HPV types. Overall, HPV 16 serology is a poor predictor of presence of HPV 16-associated CIN 3 in patient population studied.

A review of the current conservation status of Australian amphibians was recently completed as part of a World Conservation Union (IUCN) sponsored Global Amphibian Assessment (GAA). Fifty of 216 amphibian species (23%) in Australia are now recognized as threatened or extinct in accord with IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Here we report on the categories and criteria under which individual species qualified for listing and provide a summary of supporting information pertaining to population and distribution declines. Major threatening processes contributing to listing of species are also reviewed.
