Researchers have recently reported the effects of age, sex, ear asymmetry, and subject's activity status on transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs). The present study aimed to expand upon such reports by describing the characteristics of TEOAE spectra obtained from a cohort of 607 two-month-old infants in community child health clinics. Results indicated significant sex, ear and activity state effects on the signal:noise ratio, response. whole wave and band reproducibility values. These findings suggest the need for TEOAE normative data to be expressed as a function of sex, ear, and activity state of infants. These characteristics of TEOAE spectra may shape future investigations into appropriate pass-fail criteria for two-month-old infants.

In mice there are two forms of the beta chain used in the IL3 receptor system, beta(com) and beta(IL3). beta(com) is used by the IL3, ILS and GM-CSF receptors whereas Pns is only used in the IL3 receptor. In this work an assay was developed to identify residues of beta(IL3) that restrict IL5 activity. It was found that such residues reside within the 2nd CRM of the molecule. Furthermore, when residues in the beta(IL3) B'-C' loop were replaced with beta(com) sequence a form of beta(IL3) was produced that was able to respond to IL5. This region is also responsible for IL3 binding to beta(IL3) in the absence of alpha chain. It is therefore an important structural motif of beta(com) and beta(IL3) responsible for both ligand interaction and specificity. (C) 1999 Federation of European Biochemical Societies.

We show how entangled qubits can be encoded as entangled coherent states of two-dimensional center-of-mass vibrational motion for two ions in an ion trap. The entangled qubit state is equivalent to the canonical Bell state, and we introduce a proposal for entanglement transfer from the two vibrational modes to the electronic states of the two ions in order for the Bell state to be detected by resonance fluorescence shelving methods.

The Sm/Lsm proteins associate with small nuclear RNA to form the core of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins, required for processes as diverse as pre-mRNA splicing, mRNA degradation and telomere formation. The Lsm proteins from archaea are likely to represent the ancestral Sm/Lsm domain. Here, we present the crystal structure of the Lsm alpha protein from the thermophilic archaeon Methanobacterium thermoautrophicum at 2.0 Angstrom resolution. The Lsm alpha protein crystallizes as a heptameric ring comprised of seven identical subunits interacting via beta -strand pairing and hydrophobic interactions. The heptamer can be viewed as a propeller-like structure in which each blade consists of a seven-stranded antiparallel beta -sheet formed from neighbouring subunits. There are seven slots on the inner surface of the heptamer ring, each of which is lined by Asp, Asn and Arg residues that are highly conserved in the Sm/Lsm sequences. These conserved slots are likely to form the RNA-binding site. In archaea, the gene encoding Lsm alpha is located next to the L37e ribosomal protein gene in a putative operon, suggesting a role for the Lsm alpha complex in ribosome function or biogenesis. Ecological extinction caused by overfishing precedes all other pervasive human disturbance to coastal ecosystems, including pollution, degradation of water quality, and anthropogenic climate change. Historical abundances of large consumer species were fantastically large in comparison with recent observations. Paleoecological, archaeological, and historical data show that time lags of decades to centuries occurred between the onset of overfishing and consequent changes in ecological communities, because unfished species of similar trophic level assumed the ecological roles of overfished species until they too were overfished or died of epidemic diseases related to overcrowding. Retrospective data not only help to clarify underlying causes and rates of ecological change, but they also demonstrate achievable goals for restoration and management of coastal ecosystems that could not even be contemplated based on the limited perspective of recent observations alone.

The solar wind almost disappeared on May 11,1999: the solar wind plasma density and' dynamic pressure were less than 1 cm(-3) and 0.1 nPa respectively, while the interplanetary magnetic field was northward. The polar ionospheric data observed by the multi-instruments at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica on such special event day was compared with those of the control day (May 14). It was shown that geomagnetic activity was very quiet on May 11 at Zhongshan. The magnetic pulsation, which usually occurred at about magnetic noon, did not appear. The ionosphere was steady and stratified, and the F-2 layer spread very little. The critical frequency of dayside F-2 layer, f(0)F(2), was larger than that of control day, and the peak of f(0)F(2) appeared 2 hours earlier. The ionospheric drift velocity was less than usual. There were intensive auroral E-s appearing at magnetic noon. All this indicates that the polar ionosphere was extremely quiet and geomagnetic field was much more dipolar on May 11. There were some signatures of auroral substorm before midnight, such as the negative deviation of the geomagnetic H component, accompanied with auroral E-s and weak Pc3 pulsation.

Degradation of coral reef ecosystems began centuries ago, but there is no global summary of the magnitude of change. We compiled records, extending back thousands of years, of the status and trends of seven major guilds of carnivores, herbivores, and architectural species from 14 regions. Large animals declined before small animals and architectural species, and Atlantic reefs declined before reefs in the Red Sea and Australia, but the trajectories of decline were markedly similar worldwide. All reefs were substantially degraded long before outbreaks of coral disease and bleaching. Regardless of these new threats, reefs will not survive without immediate protection from human exploitation over large spatial scales.

In this paper we study the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator with injected signal, both analytically and numerically. We develop a perturbation approach which allows us to find approximate analytical solutions, starting from the full equations of motion in the positive-P representation. We demonstrate the regimes of validity of our approximations via comparison with the full stochastic results. We find that, with reasonably low levels of injected signal, the system allows for demonstrations of quantum entanglement and the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. In contrast to the normal optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold, these features are demonstrated with relatively intense fields.

Heterologous genes encoding proproteins, including proinsulin, generally produce mature protein when expressed in endocrine cells while unprocessed or partially processed protein is produced in non-endocrine cells. Proproteins, which are normally processed in the regulated pathway restricted to endocrine cells, do not always contain the recognition sequence for cleavage by furin, the endoprotease specific to the constitutive pathway, the principal protein processing pathway in non-endocrine cells. Human proinsulin consists of B-Chain-C-peptide-A-Chain and cleavage at the B/C and C/A junctions is required for processing. The B/C, but not the C/A junction, is recognised and cleaved in the constitutive pathway. We expressed a human proinsulin and a mutated proinsulin gene with an engineered furin recognition sequence at the C/A junction and compared the processing efficiency of the mutant and native proinsulin in Chinese Hamster Ovary cells. The processing efficiency of the mutant proinsulin was 56% relative to 0.7% for native proinsulin. However, despite similar levels of mRNA being expressed in both cell lines, the absolute levels of immunoreactive insulin, normalized against mRNA levels, were 18-fold lower in the mutant proinsulin-expressing cells. As a result, there was only a marginal increase in absolute levels of insulin produced by these cells. This unexpected finding may result from preferential degradation of insulin in non-endocrine cells which lack the protection offered by the secretory granules found in endocrine cells.

The present study aimed to demonstrate conditioned inhibition of Pavlovian conditioning of autonomic responses in humans. Subjects (N = 21) were presented initially with four geometric shapes (A, B, C and D). An electric shock served as the unconditioned stimulus (US) during acquisition. Conditional stimuli lasted for 8 s and US onset coincided with CS offset. Subjects were trained with A-US, C-US, and AC-US pairings and AB alone and B alone presentations. The subsequent summation test consisted of C-US pairings and CB alone and CD alone presentations. Conditioning was evident in self-reported US expectancy and first and second interval electrodermal responses. Evidence for conditioned inhibition during the summation test was found in US expectancy and second interval electrodermal responses. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The financial and economic analysis of investment projects is typically carried out using the technique of discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. This module introduces concepts of discounting and DCF analysis for the derivation of project performance criteria such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and benefit to cost (B/C) ratios. These concepts and criteria are introduced with respect to a simple example, for which calculations using MicroSoft Excel are demonstrated.
