We present a new sample of Parkes half-jansky flat-spectrum radio sources, having made a particular effort to find any previously unidentified sources. The sample contains 323 sources selected according to a flux limit of 0.5 Jy at 2.7 GHz, a spectral index measured between 2.7 and 5.0 GHz of alpha(2.7/5.0) > -0.5, where S(nu) proportional to nu(alpha), Galactic latitude \b\ > 20 degrees and -45 degrees < declination (B1950) < +10 degrees. The sample was selected from a region 3.90 steradians in area. We have obtained accurate radio positions for all the unresolved sources in this sample, and combined these with accurate optical positions from digitized photographic sky survey data to check all the optical identifications. We report new identifications based on R- and Kn-band imaging and new spectroscopic measurements of many of the sources. We present a catalogue of the 323 sources, of which 321 now have identified optical counterparts and 277 have measured spectral redshifts.

The steady-state resonance fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom driven by a bichromatic field in a broadband squeezed vacuum is studied. When the carrier frequency of the squeezed vacuum is tuned to the frequency of the central spectral line, anomalous spectral features, such as hole burning and dispersive profiles, can occur at the central line. We show that these features appear for wider, and experimentally more convenient, ranges of the parameters than in the case of monochromatic excitation. ?he absence of a coherent spectral component at the central line makes any experimental attempt to observe these features much easier. We also discuss the general features of the spectrum. When the carrier frequency of the squeezed vacuum is tuned to the first odd or even sidebands, the spectrum is asymmetric and only the sidebands an sensitive to phase. For appropriate choices of the phase the linewidths or only the odd or even sidebands can be reduced. A dressed-stale interpretation is provided.

Ag-3 was produced by pulsed-nozzle laser vaporisation and jet-cooled in a Ne supersonic expansion. One-color resonant two-photon ionisation (R2PI) spectra of the (B) over tilde(2) E '' <-- (X) over tilde(2) E' transition of Ag-3 were separately measured for all four isotopic combinations. Long vibrational progressions are observed, involving clearly resolved bands at low energy, merging into a dense but resolvable spectrum up to 1000 cm(-1) above the origin. Both the ground (X) over tilde(2) E' and excited (B) over tilde(2) E '' states of Ag-3 are susceptible to Jahn-Teller distortion along the degenerate e' bending coordinate. The Jahn-Teller analysis includes both linear and quadratic terms, simultaneously with the spin-orbit coupling. Following extensive parameter fitting, the absorption spectrum is calculated, and bands assigned. The spin-orbit splitting is quenched below the localization energy, but becomes observable approximate to 300 cm(-1) above the origin.

Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) have been used to study the thermal decomposition, the melting behavior and low-temperature transitions of copolymers obtained by radiation-induced grafting of styrene onto poly (tetrafluoroethylene- perfluoropropylvinylether) (PFA) substrates. PFA with different contents of perfluoropropylvinylether (PPVE) as a comonomer have been investigated. A two step degradation pattern was observed from TGA thermograms of all the grafted copolymers, which was attributed to degradation of PSTY followed by the degradation of the PFA backbone at higher temperature. One broad melting peak can be identified for all copolymers, which has two components in the samples with higher PPVE content. The melting peak, crystal-crystal transition and the degree of crystallinity of the grafted copolymers increases with radiation grafting up to 50 kGy, followed by a decrease at higher doses. No such decrease was observed in the ungrafted PFA samples after irradiation. This indicated that the changes in the heats of transitions and crystallinity at low doses are due to the radiation effects on the microstructure of PFA (chain scission), whereas at higher doses the grafted PSTY is the driving force behind these changes. Although extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) hydrolyze cephalosporin antibiotics, some ESBL-producing organisms are not resistant to all cephalosporins when tested in vitro. Some authors have suggested that screening klebsiellae or Escherichia coli for ESBL production is not clinically necessary, and when most recently surveyed the majority of American clinical microbiology laboratories did not make efforts to detect ESBLs, We performed a prospective, multinational study of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteremia and identified 10 patients who were treated for ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae bacteremia with cephalosporins and whose infecting organisms were not resistant in vitro to the utilized cephalosporin. In addition, we reviewed 26 similar cases of severe infections which had previously been reported. Of these 36 patients, 4 had to be excluded from analysis. Of the remaining 32 patients, 100% (4 of 4) patients experienced clinical failure when MICs of the cephalosporin used for treatment were in the intermediate range and 54% (15 of 28) experienced failure when MICs of the cephalosporin used for treatment were in the susceptible range, Thus, it is clinically important to detect ESBL production by klebsiellae or E, coli even when cephalosporin MICs are in the susceptible range (less than or equal to 8 mug/ml) and to report ESBL-producing organisms as resistant to aztreonam and all cephalosporins (with the exception of cephamycins).

We investigate the fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom driven by a multiple amplitude-modulated field. The driving held is modeled as a polychromatic field composed of a strong central (resonant) component and a large number of symmetrically detuned sideband fields displaced from the central component by integer multiples of a constant detuning. Spectra obtained here differ qualitatively from those observed for a single pair of modulating fields [B. Blind, P.R. Fontana, and P. Thomann, J. Phys. B 13, 2717 (1980)]. In the case of a small number of the modulating fields, a multipeaked spectrum is obtained with the spectral features located at fixed frequencies that are independent of the number of modulating fields and their Rabi frequencies. As the number of the modulating fields increases, the spectrum ultimately evolves to the well-known Mellow triplet with the sidebands shifted from the central component by an effective Rabi frequency whose magnitude depends on the initial relative phases of the components of the driving held. For equal relative phases, the effective Rabi frequency of the driving field can be reduced to zero resulting in the disappearance of fluorescence spectrum, i.e., the atom can stop interacting with the field. When the central component and the modulating fields are 180 degrees out of phase, the spectrum retains its triplet structure with the sidebands located at frequencies equal to the sum of the Rabi frequencies of the component of the driving field. Moreover, we shaw that the frequency of spontaneous emission can be controlled and switched from one frequency to another when the Rabi frequency or initial phase of the modulating fields are varied.

A pairing model for nucleons, introduced by Richardson in 1966, which describes proton-neutron pairing as well as proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing, is re-examined in the context of the quantum inverse scattering method. Specifically, this shows that the model is integrable by enabling the explicit construction of the conserved operators. We determine the eigenvalues of these operators in terms of the Bethe ansatz, which in turn leads to an expression for the energy eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian.

The principal aim of this paper is to measure the amount by which the profit of a multi-input, multi-output firm deviates from maximum short-run profit, and then to decompose this profit gap into components that are of practical use to managers. In particular, our interest is in the measurement of the contribution of unused capacity, along with measures of technical inefficiency, and allocative inefficiency, in this profit gap. We survey existing definitions of capacity and, after discussing their shortcomings, we propose a new ray economic capacity measure that involves short-run profit maximisation, with the output mix held constant. We go on to describe how the gap between observed profit and maximum profit can be calculated and decomposed using linear programming methods. The paper concludes with an empirical illustration, involving data on 28 international airline companies. The empirical results indicate that these airline companies achieve profit levels which are on average US$815m below potential levels, and that 70% of the gap may be attributed to unused capacity. The play of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a valuable medium for assessment and intervention, and its analysis has the potential to aid diagnosis. This study investigated spontaneous play behavior and play object preferences for 24 preschool children with ASD in a typical occupational therapy clinical environment. Play behavior was rated and choice of play object noted at 10-second intervals from a 15-minute video recording of unstructured play. Statistical analyses indicated that play behavior was consistent with descriptions in the literature. In addition, the children demonstrated clear preferences for play objects in the form of popular characters (e.g., Thomas the Tank Engine) and those with sensorimotor properties. We propose that the inclusion of preferred play objects in a clinical environment may increase intrinsic motivation to play, and thereby enhance assessment and intervention.
