Selection of machine learning techniques requires a certain sensitivity to the requirements of the problem. In particular, the problem can be made more tractable by deliberately using algorithms that are biased toward solutions of the requisite kind. In this paper, we argue that recurrent neural networks have a natural bias toward a problem domain of which biological sequence analysis tasks are a subset. We use experiments with synthetic data to illustrate this bias. We then demonstrate that this bias can be exploitable using a data set of protein sequences containing several classes of subcellular localization targeting peptides. The results show that, compared with feed forward, recurrent neural networks will generally perform better on sequence analysis tasks. Furthermore, as the patterns within the sequence become more ambiguous, the choice of specific recurrent architecture becomes more critical.

There is evidence that alienation from science is linked to the dominant discourse practices of science classrooms (cf. Lemke, J. L. (1990). Talking Science: Language, Learning, and Values. Norwood, NJ: Ablex). Yet, in secondary science education it is particularly hard to find evidence of curriculum reform that includes explicit changes in pedagogic discourses to accommodate the needs of students from a wide range of backgrounds. However, such evidence does exist and needs to be highlighted wherever it is found to help address social justice concerns in science education. In this article, I show how critical discourse analysis can be used to explore a way of challenging the dominant discourse in teacher-student interactions in science classrooms. My findings suggest a new way of moving toward more socially just science curricula in middle years and secondary classrooms by using hybrid discourses that can serve emancipatory purposes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals. Conotoxins are small conformationally constrained peptides found in the venom of marine snails of the genus Conus. They are usually cysteine rich and frequently contain a high degree of post-translational modifications such as C-terminal amidation, hydroxylation, carboxylation, bromination, epimerisation and glycosylation. Here we review the role of NMR in determining the three-dimensional structures of conotoxins and also provide a compilation and analysis of H-1 and C-13 chemical shifts of post-translationally modified amino acids and compare them with data from common amino acids. This analysis provides a reference source for chemical shifts of post-translationally modified amino acids. Copyright (C) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Phytochemical exploration of a wood bark extract from Durio zibethinus afforded two new triterpenoids, namely, methyl 27-O-trans-caffeoylcylicodiscate (1) and methyl 27-O-cis-caffeoylcylicodiscate (2), a new phenolic, 1,2-diarylpropane-3- ol (3), and seven known compounds, fraxidin, eucryphin, boehmenan, threo-carolignan E, (-)-(3R, 4S)-4-hydroxymellein, methyl protocatechuate, and (+)-(R)-de-O-methyllasiodiplodin (4). In addition, chemical analysis of a wood bark extract from Durio kutejensis yielded the new triterpenes 3 beta-O-trans-caffeoyl-2R-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (5) and 3 beta-trans-caffeoyl-2R-hydroxytaraxest-12-en-28-oic acid (6) together with four known compounds, maslinic acid, arjunolic acid, 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone, and fraxidin. The structures of all compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data.

Our previous studies using trans-complementation analysis of Kunjin virus (KUN) full-length cDNA clones harboring in-frame deletions in the NS3 gene demonstrated the inability of these defective complemented RNAs to be packaged into virus particles (W. J. Liu, P. L. Sedlak, N. Kondratieva, and A. A. Khromykh, J. Virol. 76:10766-10775). In this study we aimed to establish whether this requirement for NS3 in RNA packaging is determined by the secondary RNA structure of the NS3 gene or by the essential role of the translated NS3 gene product. Multiple silent mutations of three computer-predicted stable RNA structures in the NS3 coding region of KUN replicon RNA aimed at disrupting RNA secondary structure without affecting amino acid sequence did not affect RNA replication and packaging into virus-like particles in the packaging cell line, thus demonstrating that the predicted conserved RNA structures in the NS3 gene do not play a role in RNA replication and/or packaging. In contrast, double frameshift mutations in the NS3 coding region of full-length KUN RNA, producing scrambled NS3 protein but retaining secondary RNA structure, resulted in the loss of ability of these defective RNAs to be packaged into virus particles in complementation experiments in KUN replicon-expressing cells. Furthermore, the more robust complementation-packaging system based on established stable cell lines producing large amounts of complemented replicating NS3-deficient replicon RNAs and infection with KUN virus to provide structural proteins also failed to detect any secreted virus-like particles containing packaged NS3-deficient replicon RNAs. These results have now firmly established the requirement of KUN NS3 protein translated in cis for genome packaging into virus particles.

We sought to determine the relative impact of myocardial scar and viability on post-infarct left ventricular (LV) remodeling in medically-treated patients with LV dysfunction. Forty patients with chronic ischemic heart disease (age 64±9, EF 40±11%) underwent rest-redistribution Tl201 SPECT (scar = 50% transmural extent), A global index of scarring for each patient (CMR scar score) was calculated as the sum of transmural extent scores in all segts. LV end diastolic volumes (LVEDV) and LV end systolic volumes (LVESV) were measured by real-time threedimensional echo at baseline and median of 12 months follow-up. There was a significant positive correlation between change in LVEDV with number of scar segts by all three imaging techniques (LVEDV: SPECT scar, r = 0.62, p < 0.001; DbE scar, r = 0.57, p < 0.001; CMR scar, r = 0.52, p < 0.001) but change in LV volumes did not the correlate with number of viable segments. ROC curve analysis showed that remodeling (LVEDV> 15%) was predicted bySPECTscars(AUC= 0.79),DbEscars(AUC= 0.76),CMR scars (AUC= 0.70), and CMR scar score (AUC 0.72). There were no significant differences between any of the ROC curves (Z score

This paper addresses the question of how teachers learn from experience during their pre-service course and early years of teaching. It outlines a theoretical framework that may help us better understand how teachers' professional identities emerge in practice. The framework adapts Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, and Valsiner's Zone of Free Movement and Zone of Promoted Action, to the field of teacher education. The framework is used to analyse the pre-service and initial professional experiences of a novice secondary mathematics teacher in integrating computer and graphics calculator technologies into his classroom practice. The neurotoxicity of aluminium chloride was assessed in maleWistar albino rats. Rats were treated with aluminium chloride dissolved in distilled water at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight daily by oral gavage (1 ml) for 45 days. Controls were treated with distilled water only. Animals were sacrificed and different brain regions were dissected. GFAP analysis was carried out by Western blotting using mouse anti-GFAP monoclonal antibody (Pharmingen: 60311D) at 1:1000. Blots were developed with HRP-linked goat anti-mouse secondary antibody and quantified by densitometry.
