In recent years qualitative research methods have been adopted within in the field of music education and have received widespread acceptance. However, the theoretical framework provided by ethnomethodology (Garfinkel, 1974, in R. Turner, Ethnomethodology , Penguin, Middlesex, UK) and the tools of conversational analysis (Sacks, 1992, Lectures on Conversation , edited by Gail Jefferson, Blackwell, Oxford, UK) have, to this point, been overlooked by researchers in the field of music education. In this paper I argue that the application of ethnomethodological and conversation analytical approaches in the field of research in music education can provide fresh insights into the work of music teachers and how this work is accomplished in institutional settings. Here I demonstrate how a conversation analytical perspective drawing on an ethnomethodological framework might be used to investigate transcripts of audio-recorded interview talk. This type of analysis can illuminate aspects of members' roles in relation to, and perceptions about music education in school settings that might be overlooked in other types of analysis. A conversation analytical approach to the examination of talk-in-interaction explicates in fine-grained detail how members orient to matters at hand in the context of research settings, as well as revealing features of the cultural world of music teaching. Further application of the approach to research problems in other school settings, I argue, will inform the field of music education in ways yet to be realised.

The plasma membrane of differentiated skeletal muscle fibers comprises the sarcolemma, the transverse (T) tubule network, and the neuromuscular and muscle-tendon junctions. We analyzed the organization of these domains in relation to defined surface markers, beta -dystroglycan, dystrophin, and caveolin-3, These markers were shown to exhibit highly organized arrays along the length of the fiber. Caveolin-3 and beta -dystroglycan/dystrophin showed distinct, but to some extent overlapping, labeling patterns and both markers left transverse tubule openings clear. This labeling pattern revealed microdomains over the entire plasma membrane with the exception of the neuromuscular and muscle-tendon junctions which formed distinct demarcated macrodomains. Our results suggest that the entire plasma membrane of mature muscle comprises a mosaic of T tubule domains together with sareolemmal caveolae and beta -dystroglycan domains. The domains identified with these markers were examined with respect to targeting of viral proteins and other expressed domain-specific markers, We found that each marker protein was targeted to distinct microdomains, The macrodomains were intensely labeled with all our markers. Replacing the cytoplasmic tail of the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein with that of CD4 resulted in retargeting from one domain to another. The domain-specific protein distribution at the muscle cell surface may be generated by targeting pathways requiring specific sorting information but this trafficking is different from the conventional apical-basolateral division. With loss permeating the lives of all people throughout the entire life span and its potential for serious long-term deleterious effects, providing effective care for those experiencing situations of loss would be an important element of any preventive community-based mental health promotion approach. The low use of mental health services by those confronted with loss, and the lack of such services in many areas, makes it imperative to enhance the competency of the broader community to provide appropriate care during times of loss. Contributory to such care is a sound knowledge of the literature concerning loss and grieving. The broken leg analogy of grief presented in this article integrates the traditional and emerging grief theories and empirical evidence into an analogy of grieving that can be easily communicated to the general community, is relevant to many losses. and vet upholds the differing positions concerning grieving held by various schools of psychiatric thought.

This study evaluated the suitability of written materials for stroke survivors and their carers. Twenty stroke survivors and 14 carers were interviewed about the stroke information they had received and their perceptions of the content and presentation of materials of increasing reading difficulty. The mean readability level of materials (grade 9) was higher than participants’ mean reading ability (grade 7–8). Satisfaction with materials decreased as the content became more difficult to read. Seventy-five percent reported that their information needs were not met in hospital. More stroke survivors with aphasia wanted support from health professionals to read and understand written information, and identified simple language, large font size, color, and diagrams to complement the text as being important features of written materials. Simple materials that meet clients’ information needs and design preferences may optimally inform them about stroke.
