Tissue damage in the kidney and brain after systemic infection with Candida albicans was examined in recombinant inbred strains (AKXL) derived from AKR and C57/L progenitors. Nine of the 15 strains showed mild (C57/L-like) tissue damage. Of the remainder, two strains developed lesions comparable to the AKR parental strain, whereas four exhibited a much move severe pattern of tissue damage. This was characterized by pronounced mycelial growth in the brain, and gross oedema of the kidney, with extensive fungal colonization and marked tissue destruction. The presence of the null allele of the haemolytic complement gene (Hc) may be necessary but not sufficient, for the expression of the very severe lesions. The results were interpreted as reflecting the actions of two independent genes, which have been designated Carg1 and Carg2 (Candida albicans resistance genes 1 and 2). Factors influencing the relationship between whiteheads caused by the white stem borer Scirpophaga innotata (Walker) and grain yield were investigated. We determined the effect of different numbers of whiteheads on grain yield using different cultivars, nitrogen application, and at different field locations in Cilamaya, West Java. At the same number of panicles and whiteheads per plant, yield reduction is greater in cisadane than in IR64. With increasing nitrogen application, the range in panicle height increased. Except for Ketan, more whiteheads were recorded in shorter panicles. Two locations planted to the same cultivar showed different relationships between whiteheads and grain yield. The relationship between whiteheads and grain yield depends on the distribution of whiteheads in the field. Unless these factors have been taken into consideration, it may be difficult to make a damage prediction of white stem borer in the field. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

The interference with agriculture has been recognised as the main cause for the current conflict between farmers and wild elephants in Sri Lanka, as elsewhere in the Asian elephant range. Thus compensating farmers for the damages caused by elephants is essential, if this endangered species is to survive in the long run. This paper explores the practicality of establishing an improved publicly funded insurance/compensation scheme to recompense farmers for the elephant damages. It does so by analysing results from two contingent valuation surveys undertaken in Sri Lanka. We find that possible public support of farmers plus urban dwellers significantly exceeds the financial requirement of the insurance scheme proposed in this study for perpetuity. The article also shows that it is often inappropriate from an economic viewpoint to analyse crop insurance as if it only involves the insurance of a private good because important positive externalities can arise from ‘crop’ damages by wildlife, e.g. elephants. The use of agricultural land by some species is essential for their long-term survival and this is often positively valued by the community as a whole.

Traumatic injury to the dentition of dipnoans, indirectly as a result of jaw fracture, or directly from damage to the tooth tissues, is present throughout the history of this group, in fossil and in Recent material. Bones heal, but traces of the injury are retained in the tooth tissues, permanently if the proliferative regions of the tooth plate are injured, or until the damaged dentines are removed by wear if the growing regions are left intact. Lack of resorption and repair of damaged dental hard tissues in dipnoans has implications for some models of tooth plate growth in lungfish with a permanent dentition, because this indicates that lungfish tooth plates may not have the capacity to form reparative dentine as part of the normal growth processes.

In the limit state design (LSD) method each design criterion is formally stated and assessed using a performance function. The performance function defines the relationship between the design parameters and the design criterion. In practice, LSD involves factoring up loads and factoring down calculated strengths and material parameters. This provides a convenient way to carry out routine probabilistic-based design. The factors are statistically calculated to produce a design with an acceptably low probability of failure. Hence the ultimate load and the design material properties are mathematical concepts that have no physical interpretation. They may be physically impossible. Similarly, the appropriate analysis model is also defined by the performance function and may not describe the real behaviour at the perceived physical equivalent limit condition. These points must be understood to avoid confusion in the discussion and application of partial factor LSD methods.

Purpose: We examined the effects of short-term beta -hydroxy-beta -methylbutyrate (HIM) supplementation on symptoms of muscle damage following an acute bout of eccentric exercise. Methods: Non-resistance trained subjects were randomly assigned to a HMB supplement group (HMB, 40mg/kg bodyweight/day, n = 8) or placebo group (CON, n = 9). Supplementation commenced 6 days prior to a bout of 24 maximal isokinetic eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors and continued throughout post-testing. Muscle soreness, upper arm girth, and torque measures were assessed pre-exercise, 15 min post-exercise, and 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 10 days post-exercise. Results: No pre-test differences between HMB and CON groups were identified, and both performed a similar amount of eccentric work during the main eccentric exercise bout (p > .05). HMB supplementation had no effect on swelling, muscle soreness, or torque following the damaging eccentric exercise bout (p > .05). Conclusion: Compared to a placebo condition, short-term supplementation with 40mg/kg bodyweight/day of HMB had no beneficial effect on a range of symptoms associated with eccentric muscle damage. If HMB can produce an ergogenic response, a longer pre-exercise supplementation period may be necessary.
