The structure of the product from the free radical bulk copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and allyl acetate (AAc) was investigated. The mole fraction of AAc plays an important role in the copolymerization of these two monomers. Molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) are completely altered when the feed composition is dominantly AAc. NMR spectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of AAc into the polymer. However, no allyl-allyl linkages were observed at low conversions. T-g was found to be affected by the incorporation of AAc into the polymer. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

The surface oxidation of two polyimides containing fluorinated phenylphosphine oxide units, TOR-RC and TOR-RC ODPA, have been studied by (XPS) spectroscopy following gamma -radiolysis under vacuum or in air and subsequent treatment in a water plasma. The changes in the O 1s/C 1s ratios obtained from (XPS) analysis showed that on exposure to the water plasma the ratio increases and then levels to a constant value which is similar to that found for exposure to the plasma without prior gamma -radiation treatment. Evidence for the formation of phosphate species was also obtained from the (XPS) analyses. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The microwave and thermal cure processes for the epoxy-amine systems (epoxy resin diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, DGEBA) with 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulphone (DDS) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) have been investigated for 1:1 stoichiometries by using fiber-optic FT-NIR spectroscopy. The DGEBA used was in the form of Ciba-Geigy GY260 resin. The DDM system was studied at a single cure temperature of 373 K and a single stoichiometry of 20.94 wt% and the DDS system was studied at a stoichiometry of 24.9 wt% and a range of temperatures between 393 and 443 K. The best values of the kinetic rate parameters for the consumption of amines have been determined by a least squares curve fit to a model for epoxy/amine cure. The activation energies for the polymerization of the DGEBA/DDS system were determined for both cure processes and found to be 66 and 69 kJ mol(-1) for the microwave and thermal cure processes, respectively. No evidence was found for any specific effect of the microwave radiation on the rate parameters, and the systems were both found to be characterized by a negative substitution effect. A hyphenated instrumental approach has been used to obtain reliable values for the propagation rate coefficients as a function of conversion for polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and a mixture of MMA and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) with a 1:1 concentration of double bonds, from near the onset of the Trommsdorf region into the glass region. ESR spectroscopy was used to measure the radical concentration while FT-NIR fibre-optic spectroscopy was employed to measure instantaneously the double-bond concentration within the temperature-controlled cavity of the ESR instrument during polymerization. The advantage of this approach to the measurement of the rate coefficient is that it is equally applicable to branching and linear polymerizations. For the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, the values of the rate coefficient at the lowest conversions at which reliable values could be obtained were in agreement with recently reported values obtained by the PLP-SEC method. For the lowest conversions, the values obtained were 403 1 mol(-1) s(-1) at 306 K for MMA and 5201 mol(-1) s(-1) at 310 K for a 1:1 mixture of MMA and EGDMA. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

The radicals formed on gamma-radiolysis of a series of copolymers of methacrylic acid and acrylonitrile have been investigated by ESR spectroscopy. This series of copolymers spanned the full composition range and the study was carried out at 77 K and ambient temperature. The radicals formed in the copolymers at 77 and 303 K were found to be similar to those found in the two homopolymers, but in the intermediate composition range the presence of acrylonitrile propagation radicals was also detected. These radicals were not observed to be formed in significant quantities on the radiolysis of polyacrylonitrile. They are believed to result from a scission of the main chain at methacrylic acid/acrylonitrile diad sequences following loss of the methacrylic acid carboxyl group. At 77 K, the copolymers with high methacrylic acid contents were found to be more sensitive to radical formation than the methacrylic acid homopolymer, but this enhanced sensitivity was not evident at ambient temperature, where the G-values for radical formation for the copolymers were slightly less than the values for the homopolymers. The effects of copolymer composition and microstructure on the radiation chemistry of styrene/alkane and alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers have been studied. The primary radical species formed on radiolysis of the copolymers at 77 K, and identified by ESR spectroscopy, are the same as those formed during radiolysis of the homopolymers. The yields of radicals for the copolymer are as predicted assuming that the cross-section is proportional to the electron density of each component; however, there is some evidence of radical migration to aromatic groups at 77 K. Changes in molecular structure on irradiation were detected by using C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Evidence of the consumption of terminal double bonds, and chain scission in alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers was found. Measurements of viscosity supported the mechanism of cross-linking predominating in styrene/alkane copolymers, while in alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers chain scission was the major result of irradiation. Ultem irradiated up to 10.0 MGy has been analysed using C-13, H-1 and D-2 proton-carbon and proton-proton correlation NMR spectroscopy to shed light on the formation of new structures. Chemical shifts and correlation data were used to determine the structure or partial structures of several new components. The spectra indicated the presence of new groups and structures involving the isopropylidene group, the imide ring, and hydrogen-abstraction reactions. Possible pathways for formation of the new structures are proposed and the G-values for their formation have been estimated. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We live in an age when the number of refugees worldwide is increasing. All of them have suffered physically or emotionally to a varying degree in their country of origin. The transit to a country of resettlement is fraught with further difficulties or the risk of death. This article explores the different approach taken to the management of this issue by Denmark and Iceland, in comparison to that of Australia. In particular, the different approaches to health care for children and their families are identified. The management of these issues by Denmark and Iceland would appear to be a model to follow. Outcomes of the different managements have not been assessed.

The precipitation patterns and characteristics of calcium phosphate (CaP) phases deposited on HEMA-based hydrogels upon incubation in simulated body fluid (SBF-2) containing a protein (human serum albumin) have been investigated in relation to the calcification in an organic-free medium (SBF-1) and to that occurring after subcutaneous implantation in rats. In SBF-2, the deposits occurred exclusively as a peripheral layer on the surface of the hydrogels and consisted mainly of precipitated hydroxyapatite, a species deficient in calcium and hydroxyl ions, similarly to the deposits formed on the implanted hydrogels, where the deposited layer was thicker. In SBF-1, the deposits were mainly of brushite type. There was no evidence that albumin penetrated the interstices of hydrogels. As the X-ray diffraction patterns of the CaP deposits generated in SBF-2 showed a similar nature with those formed on the implanted hydrogel, it was concluded that the calcification in SBF-2 can mimic to a reliable extent the calcification process taking place in a biological environment.

A range of polyimides have been subjected to electron beam radiolysis at different temperatures. These polyimides were chemically designed to suit space applications, being either transparent or having groups which provide oxidation resistance. The structural changes that occur in the polyimides, when subjected to electron beam irradiation doses up to 18.5 MGy and up to temperatures close to their glass transition temperatures, were studied using FT-Raman spectroscopy. The range of polyimides studied included a series of perfluoropolyimides, a silicon-modified polyimide, and Ultem. The changes in the Raman peak intensities of the different groups indicated scission reactions involving the imide rings and ether linkages. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

NMR spectroscopy and relaxometry were used to investigate microemulsion formation in supercritical CO2. The droplets were stabilised by the salt of a perfluorinated polyether. Spontaneous microemulsion formation was observed over a period of 5 h in the absence of applied sheer. Time-resolved relaxation times of the surfactant tail showed a stepwise increase in mobility of the tail over this period. Conversely, the translational mobility of water confined within the droplet decreased over the same interval. This data is consistent with the gradual decrease in droplet size as time progressed. Indeed, NMR self-diffusion coefficients were used to show that droplets with a radius of approximately 5 nm were formed at equilibrium.

The diffusion of styrene into linear low density polyethylene in a solution of supercritical CO2 was investigated using NMR microimaging. For both pure styrene and styrene dissolved in supercritical CO2, the diffusion was found to follow Fickian kinetics. Supercritical CO2 was found to enhance the rate and extent of diffusion of styrene into the substrate by up to three times under the conditions of this investigation, compared to pure styrene. NMR imaging was used to measure the concentration profiles of the styrene penetrants in real time, and the results were fitted to a Fickian model for diffusion. At a CO2 pressure of 150 bar and temperature of 40 degrees C, the diffusion coefficient of a 30 wt-% solution of styrene into LLDPE was calculated to be 1 X 10(-11) m(2). s(-1). This is significantly faster than the diffusion coefficient measured for pure styrene diffusion at 40 degrees C (3 x 10(-12) m(2). s(-1)). The diffusion coefficients determined by gravimetric analysis were slightly higher than those determined by the imaging method. This was probably due to residual styrene and/or polystyrene adhering to the surface of the films in the gravimetric technique.

Axillary lymph node status is one of the most powerful prognostic factors for patients with breast cancer and is often critical in stratifying patients into adjuvant treatment regimens. In 203 apparently node-negative cases of breast cancer, a combination of immunohistochemical staining and step-sectioning identified occult metastases in 25% of cases. Ten-year follow-up information is available for these patients. Histologic features of the primary tumor and immunohistochemical staining for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Her-2, and p53 were also evaluated. With multivariate analysis, both occult metastases and higher histologic grade of the primary tumor were independent predictors of disease-free survival. Histologic grade was the only significant independent predictor of overall survival. Estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Her-2, and p53 status did not predict the presence of metastases or survival when all tumor types were considered together. Metastases >0.5 mm significantly predicted a poorer disease-free survival when invasive ductal carcinomas were considered alone. Histologic grade was significantly associated with disease-free survival in the premenopausal and perimenopausal patients but not in the postmenopausal patients. The presence of occult metastases approached significance for overall survival in the premenopausal and perimenopausal patients but not in the postmenopausal patients.
