Slumping of hardsetting seedbeds upon wetting has not been extensively studied despite the likelihood that it determines the physical properties after drying. Slumping results from processes similar to those involved in crusting except that overburden pressure can dominate rather than rainfall kinetic energy. Only a few studies have dealt with the morphological description of slumping. To simulate different climatic and management conditions, repacked seedbeds of a hardsetting sandy-loam soil were subjected to a range of wetting conditions, e.g. capillary rise, immersion, and rainfall simulation. Slumping processes were characterized using qualitative and quantitative micromorphological observations of polished blocks and thin sections from resin-impregnated samples. A morphogenetical framework was proposed to help description of the complex associations of processes which can lead to structural collapse (crusting and slumping) on wetting. Three main stages were considered, i.e. aggregate disruption or abrasion, relocation of the released material, and compaction. In the hardsetting material studied here, structural collapse under slow wetting occurred at the bottom of cores due to aggregate coalescence under overburden pressure. Coalescence required aggregate cohesion being reduced by microcracking; therefore, it differed from the coalescence previously described in unstable silty loam soils where microcracking was not necessary for aggregates to coalesce. Macroporosity decreased most strongly under fast wetting due to physical dispersion and aggregate breakdown. Under simulated rainfall, compaction by raindrops could not be distinguish from aggregate breakdown. The role of overburden pressure and of rainfall kinetic energy remains to be stated; new data are required including measurement of total porosity in the initial, wet, and dry states. Leadership is a perennially popular topic in the academic and practitioner literature on management. In particular, the past twenty years have witnessed an explosive growth of interest in what has been termed 'transformational leadership' (henceforth, TL). The theory is closely linked to the growth in what has been defined as corporate culturism - an emphasis on the importance of cohereat cultures, as a means of securing competitive advantage. This article outlines the central components of TL theory, and subjects the concept to a critical analysis. In particular, similarities are identified between the components concerned and the characteristics of leadership practice in organizations generally defined as cults. This connection has been previously unremarked in the literature. These similarities are comprehensively reviewed. Trends towards what can be defined as corporate cultism in modem management practice are also discussed. We conclude that TL models are overly concerned with the achievement of corporate cohesion to the detriment of internal dissent Such dissent is a vital ingredient of effective decision-making. It is suggested that more inclusive and participatory models of the leadership process are required.

Classical cadherins mediate cell recognition and cohesion in many tissues of the body. It is increasingly apparent that dynamic cadherin contacts play key roles during morphogenesis and that a range of cell signals are activated as cells form contacts with one another. It has been difficult, however, to determine whether these signals represent direct downstream consequences of cadherin ligation or are juxtacrine signals that are activated when cadherin adhesion brings cell surfaces together but are not direct downstream targets of cadherin signaling. In this study, we used a functional cadherin ligand (hE/Fc) to directly test whether E-cadherin ligation regulates phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase) and Rac signaling. We report that homophilic cadherin ligation recruits Rae to nascent adhesive contacts and specifically stimulates Rae signaling. Adhesion to hE/Fc also recruits PI 3-kinase to the cadherin complex, leading to the production of phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate in nascent cadherin contacts. Rae activation involved an early phase, which was PI 3-kinase-independent, and a later amplification phase, which was inhibited by wortmannin. PI 3-kinase and Rae activity were necessary for productive adhesive contacts to form following initial homophilic ligation. We conclude that E-cadherin is a cellular receptor that is activated upon homophilic ligation to signal through PI 3-kinase and Rae. We propose that a key function of these cadherin-activated signals is to control adhesive contacts, probably via regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, which ultimately serves to mediate adhesive cell-cell recognition.

Most considerations of knowledge management focus on corporations and, until recently, considered knowledge to be objective, stable, and asocial. In this paper we wish to move the focus away from corporations, and examine knowledge and national innovation systems. We argue that the knowledge systems in which innovation takes place are phenomenologically turbulent, a state not made explicit in the change, innovation and socio-economic studies of knowledge literature, and that this omission poses a serious limitation to the successful analysis of innovation and knowledge systems. To address this lack we suggest that three evolutionary processes must be considered: self-referencing, self-transformation and self-organisation. These processes, acting simultaneously, enable system cohesion, radical innovation and adaptation. More specifically, we argue that in knowledge-based economies the high levels of phenomenological turbulence drives these processes. Finally, we spell out important policy principles that derive from these processes.
