A dual catalyst bed system (Au/Fe2O3 + Pt-Pd/Al2O3) for eliminating hydrogen from the CO2 feed gas in urea synthesis is found to be far superior to commercially available and patented catalysts in catalytic activity. At relatively low temperatures, hydrogen is eliminated and coexistent CO is also oxidized completely to useful CO2. This can avoid effectively the accidental explosion of hydrogen-oxygen-ammonia mixed gases, thus ensuring the safety of urea synthesis.

Background: Over-ventilation causing low arterial carbon dioxide levels (PaCO2) has been associated with the development of neonatal chronic lung disease and adverse outcomes. This may occur very soon after birth. Aim: To investigate the effect on PaCO2 and oxygenation of very premature lambs resuscitated with different tidal volumes and PEEP. Methods: Anaesthetised lambs delivered at 126 days gestation were randomised to 15 min resuscitation with 3 regimes: (1) Laerdal resuscitation bag (B) with 100% oxygen and no PEEP, (2) fixed tidal volume (VT) of 5 mL/kg, or (3) VT of 10 mL/kg, both delivered with a Babylog 8000 ventilator in volume guarantee mode with 8 cm H2O PEEP and variable FiO2. Frequent blood gases were measured and VT, mean airway pressure (Paw), minute volume (MV), ventilation rate (VR), respiratory system compliance (Crs) and alveolar/arterial oxygen difference (AaDO2) were recorded. Results: Twenty lambs were studied. B (1) was associated with more variable VT and peak inspiratory pressures (PIP) compared to fixed tidal volumes (2 and 3). The lambs ventilated with 10 mL/kg were over-ventilated, those ventilated with 5 mL/kg were slightly under-ventilated. Those ventilated with the Laerdal bag had a mean VT of 7.5 mL/kg and were normocarbic. The different tidal volumes had little effect on oxygenation. PEEP improved oxygenation. The table shows the values at 15 minutes expressed as mean and SEM. TABLE. No caption av... TABLE. No caption av... Image Tools Conclusion: Very premature lambs can be effectively resuscitated from birth using volume guarantee ventilation. Within minutes of birth different tidal volumes had a large effect on PaCO2 and no effect on oxygenation. Studies are needed to determine the appropriate tidal volume for resuscitating very premature infants to maintain acceptable levels of PaCO2. © International Pediatrics Research Foundation, Inc. 2004. Coral reefs generally exist within a relatively narrow band of temperatures, light, and seawater aragonite saturation states. The growth of coral reefs is minimal or nonexistent outside this envelope. Climate change, through its effect on ocean temperature, has already had an impact on the world's coral reefs, with almost 30% of corals having disappeared since the beginning of the 1980s. Abnormally warm temperatures cause corals to bleach ( lose their brown dinoflagellate symbionts) and, if elevated for long enough, to die. Increasing atmospheric CO2 is also potentially affecting coral reefs by lowering the aragonite saturation state of seawater, making carbonate ions less available for calcification. The synergistic interaction of elevated temperature and CO2 is likely to produce major changes to coral reefs over the next few decades and centuries. Known tolerances of corals to projected changes to sea temperatures indicate that corals are unlikely to remain abundant on reefs and could be rare by the middle of this century if the atmospheric CO2 concentration doubles or triples. The combination of changes to sea temperature and carbonate ion availability could trigger large- scale changes in the biodiversity and function of coral reefs. The ramifications of these changes for the hundred of millions of coral reef - dependent people and industries living in a high- CO2 world have yet to be properly defined. The weight of evidence suggests, however, that projected changes will cause major shifts in the prospects for industries and societies that depend on having healthy coral reefs along their coastlines.

A novel flow-tagging technique is presented which was employed to measure gas velocities in the free stream of a shock tube. This method is based on the laser spectroscopic techniques of Laser-Enhanced Ionisation (LEI) and Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF). The flow in the shock tube is seeded with small amounts of sodium, and LEI is used to produce a substantial depletion of neutral sodium atom concentration in a well-defined region of the flow, by using two wavelength-resonance excitation and subsequent collisional ionisation. At a specific time delay, single-laser-pulse planar LIF is utilised to produce a two-dimensional (2-D) inverse image of the depleted tagged region downstream of the flow. By measuring the displacement of the tagged region, free stream velocities in a shock tube were determined. Large variations in the concentration of sodium seeded into the flow were observed and even in the presence of these large variations accurate free-stream velocity measurements were obtained. The experimentally determined value for velocity compares very well with the predicted velocity.

The acceptance-probability-controlled simulated annealing with an adaptive move generation procedure, an optimization technique derived from the simulated annealing algorithm, is presented. The adaptive move generation procedure was compared against the random move generation procedure on seven multiminima test functions, as well as on the synthetic data, resembling the optical constants of a metal. In all cases the algorithm proved to have faster convergence and superior escaping from local minima. This algorithm was then applied to fit the model dielectric function to data for platinum and aluminum.

The spatial and temporal evolution of a depleted atomic distribution created by laser enhanced ionisation (LEI) was employed to determine both a diffusion coefficient for sodium (Na) and an electron (e(-)) and sodium ion recombination rate coefficient in an analytical air-C2H2 flame. A depleted distribution of neutral sodium atoms was produced in a flame by ionising approximately 80% of the irradiated sodium atoms in a well defined region using a two step LEI excitation scheme. Following depletion by ionisation, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) images of the depleted region recorded the diffusion and decay of the depleted Na distribution for different depletion-probe delays. From measurements of the diffused width of the distribution, an accurate diffusion coefficient D = (1.19 +/- 0.03) x 10(-3) m(2) s(-1) for Na was determined in teh burnt gases of the flame. Measurements of the integrated fluorescence intensity in the depleted region for different depletion-probe delays were related to an increase in atomic sodium concentration caused by electron-ion recombination. At high concentrations (greater than or equal to 50 mu g ml(-1)), where the electron and ion concentrations in the depleted region were assumed equal, a recombination rate coefficient of 4.2 x 10(-9) cm(3) s(-1) was calculated. Antiphase dynamics of an optically pumped NH3 bidirectional ring laser under the chaotic, phase-sensitive mode coupling is experimentally observed. Our experimental result suggests strongly that the dynamics is a generic behavior of the laser.

We propose a simulated-annealing-based genetic algorithm for solving model parameter estimation problems. The algorithm incorporates advantages of both genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. Tests on computer-generated synthetic data that closely resemble optical constants of a metal were performed to compare the efficiency of plain genetic algorithms against the simulated-annealing-based genetic algorithms. These tests assess the ability of the algorithms to and the global minimum and the accuracy of values obtained for model parameters. Finally, the algorithm with the best performance is used to fit the model dielectric function to data for platinum and aluminum. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

We report experimental studies of metastable chaos in the far-infrared ammonia ring: laser. When the laser pump power is switched from above chaos threshold to slightly below, chaotic intensity pulsations continue for a varying time afterward before decaying to either periodic or cw emission. The behavior is in good qualitative agreement with that predicted by the Lorenz equations, previously used to describe this laser. The statistical distribution of the duration of the chaotic transient is measured and shown to be in excellent agreement with the Lorenz equations in showing a modified exponential distribution. We also give a brief numerical analysis and graphical visualization of the Lorenz equations in phase space illustrating the boundary between the metastable chaotic and the stable fixed point basins of attraction. This provides an intuitive understanding of the metastable dynamics of the Lorenz equations and the experimental system.

We show experimentally that under certain conditions the chaotic intensity dynamics of an optically pumped NH3 bidirectional ring laser could be well described in terms of Shil'nikov homoclinic orbits and chaos. We found that the mechanism that resulted in this kind of dynamics of the laser is the competition between effects caused by the mode interaction between the forward and the backward modes of the laser and by the intrinsic single-mode dynamics of the interacting modes.
