We present new major element, trace element and Nd-isotope data for 30 alluvial sediments collected from 25 rivers in Queensland, E Australia. Samples were chosen to represent drainage from the region's most important lithologies, including Tertiary intraplate volcanic rocks, a Cretaceous igneous province (and sedimentary rocks derived thereof) as well as Proterozoic blocks. In most chemical and isotopic aspects, the alluvial sediments represent binary or ternary mixing relationships, with absolute abundances implied to reflect the proportion of lithologies in the catchments. When averaged, the studied sediments differ from other proxies of upper continental crust (UCC) mainly in their relative middle rare earth element enrichment (including an elevated Sm/Nd ratio), higher relative Eu abundance and higher Nb/Ta ratio. These features are inherited from eroded Tertiary intraplate basalts, which commonly form topographic highs in the studied region. Despite the high degree of weathering strong to excellent coherence between similarly incompatible elements is found for all samples. From this coherence, we suggest revisions of the following upper crustal element ratios: Y/Ho = 26.2, Yb/Tm = 6.37, Th/W = 7.14, Th/Tl = 24 and Zr/Hf = 36.9. Lithium, Rb, Cs and Be contents do not seem depleted relative to UCC, which may reflect paucity of K-feldspar in the eroded catchments. Nickel, Cr, Pb, Cu and Zn concentrations are elevated in polluted rivers surrounding the state capital. River sediments in the Proterozoic Georgetown Inlier are elevated in Pb, Cu and Zn but this could be a natural phenomenon reflecting abundant sulphide mineralisation in the area. Except for relative Sr concentrations, which broadly anticorrelate with mean annual rainfall in catchments, there is no obvious relationship between the extent of weathering and climate types, which range from and to tropical. The most likely explanation for this observation is that the weathering profiles in many catchments are several Myr old, established during the much wetter Miocene period. The studied sediment compositions (excluding those from the Proterozoic catchments) are used to propose a new trace element normalisation termed MUQ (MUd from Queensland), which serves as an alternative to UCC proxies derived from sedimentary rocks. We construct the Drinfeld twists (or factorizing F-matrices) of the supersymmetric model associated with quantum superalgebra U-q(gl(m vertical bar n)), and obtain the completely symmetric representations of the creation operators of the model in the F-basis provided by the F-matrix. As an application of our general results, we present the explicit expressions of the Bethe vectors in the F-basis for the U-q(gl(2 vertical bar 1))-model (the quantum t-J model).

The Bin1/amphiphysin/Rvs167 (BAR) domain proteins are a ubiquitous protein family. Genes encoding members of this family have not yet been found in the genomes of prokaryotes, but within eukaryotes, BAR domain proteins are found universally from unicellular eukaryotes such as yeast through to plants, insects, and vertebrates. BAR domain proteins share an N-terminal BAR domain with a high propensity to adopt alpha-helical structure and engage in coiled-coil interactions with other proteins. BAR domain proteins are implicated in processes as fundamental and diverse as fission of synaptic vesicles, cell polarity, endocytosis, regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, transcriptional repression, cell-cell fusion, signal transduction, apoptosis, secretory vesicle fusion, excitation-contraction coupling, learning and memory, tissue differentiation, ion flux across membranes, and tumor suppression. What has been lacking is a molecular understanding of the role of the BAR domain protein in each process. The three-dimensional structure of the BAR domain has now been determined and valuable insight has been gained in understanding the interactions of BAR domains with membranes. The cellular roles of BAR domain proteins, characterized over the past decade in cells as distinct as yeasts, neurons, and myocytes, can now be understood in terms of a fundamental molecular function of all BAR domain proteins: to sense membrane curvature, to bind GTPases, and to mold a diversity of cellular membranes.

At Brisbane Airport, the construction of a diversion channel for Kedron Brook exposed a former beach, low cliff and sand spit, which, with their associated sediments and acid sulfate soils, demonstrate a postglacial high sea-level 1.3 - 1.4 m above present mean sea-level. The beach appears to date from 4000 to 5000 y BP. It varies in level where it lies above soft ground; these variations, and sag depressions that follow buried streamlines, indicate sediment consolidation since withdrawal of the sea from the former shore. Most of the area consists of former estuarine deposits, mangrove and saline marshes, and stranded tidal flats on which acid sulfate soils are widely developed. The modern landforms mostly reproduce subsurface features, to the extent that the surface relief replicates the landscape transgressed by the sea 7000 years ago. A small rise of sea-level possibly to +0.65 m occurred about 2000-3000 years ago. Foredunes near the present shore that are related to a slightly lower level 1000 - 500 years ago (-0.25 m) are currently subject to wave erosion.

It has been established that large numbers of certain trees can survive in the beds of rivers of northeastern Australia where a strongly seasonal distribution of precipitation causes extreme variations in flow on both a yearly and longer-term basis. In these rivers, minimal flow occurs throughout much of any year and for periods of up to several years, allowing the trees to become established and to adapt their form in order to facilitate their survival in environments that experience periodic inundation by fast-flowing, debris-laden water. Such trees (notably paperbark trees of the angiosperm genus Melaleuca) adopt a reclined to prostrate, downstream-trailing habit, have a multiple-stemmed form, modified crown with weeping foliage, development of thick, spongy bark, anchoring of roots into firm to lithified substrates beneath the channel floor, root regeneration, and develop in flow-parallel, linear groves. Individuals from within flow-parallel, linear groves are preserved in situ within the alluvial deposit of the river following burial and death. Four examples of in situ tree fossils within alluvial channel deposits in the Permian of eastern Australia demonstrate that specialised riverbed plant communities also existed at times in the geological past. These examples, from the Lower Permian Carmila Beds, Upper Permian Moranbah Coal Measures and Baralaba Coal Measures of central Queensland and the Upper Permian Newcastle Coal Measures of central New South Wales, show several of the characteristics of trees described from modern rivers in northeastern Australia, including preservation in closely-spaced groups. These properties, together with independent sedimentological evidence, suggest that the Permian trees were adapted to an environment affected by highly variable runoff, albeit in a more temperate climatic situation than the modem Australian examples. It is proposed that occurrences of fossil trees preserved in situ within alluvial channel deposits may be diagnostic of environments controlled by seasonal and longer-term variability in fluvial runoff, and hence may have value in interpreting aspects of palaeoclimate from ancient alluvial successions. Representations of the non-semisimple superalgebra gl(2/2) in the standard basis are investigated by means of the vector coherent state method and boson-fermion realization. All finite-dimensional irreducible typical and atypical representations and lowest weight (indecomposable) Kac modules of gl(2/2) are constructed explicity through the explicit construction of all gl(2) circle plus gl(2) particle states (multiplets) in terms of boson and fermion creation operators in the super-Fock space. This gives a unified and complete treatment of finite-dimensional representations of gl(2/2) in explicit form, essential for the construction of primary fields of the corresponding current superalgebra at arbitrary level.

Numerical experiments using a finite difference method were carried out to determine the motion of axisymmetric Taylor vortices for narrow-gap Taylor vortex flow. When a pressure gradient is imposed on the flow the vortices are observed to move with an axial speed of 1.16 +/- 0.005 times the mean axial flow velocity. The method of Brenner was used to calculate the long-time axial spread of material in the flow. For flows where there is no pressure gradient, the axial dispersion scales with the square root of the molecular diffusion, in agreement with the results of Rosen-bluth et al. for high Peclet number dispersion in spatially periodic flows with a roll structure. When a pressure gradient is imposed the dispersion increases by an amount approximately equal to 6.5 x 10(-4) (W) over bar(2)d(2)/D-m, where (W) over bar is the average axial velocity in the annulus, analogous to Taylor dispersion for laminar flow in an empty tube.

Reaction of bis(ethane-1,2-diamine)copper(II) with acetaldehyde and nitromethane in methanol leads, stereoselectively, to the new macrocyclic complex (trans-5(R),7(R),12(S),14(S))-tetramethyl-6,13-dinitro-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) perchlorate alpha-[CuL1](ClO4)(2) in good yield. Reduction of the nitro groups affords the hexaamine (L-2), which was crystallized as [H4L2](ClO4)(4) . 2H(2)O and characterized by an X-ray crystal structure study (monoclinic P2(1)/n, a = 9.763(2) Angstrom, b = 12.1988(7) Angstrom, c = 13.036(2) Angstrom, beta = 105.668(7)degrees, Z = 2) and complexed with Cu-II to produce the complex beta-[Cu(H2L2)](ClO4)(4) . 2H(2)O, which has also been characterized by X-ray crystallography (monoclinic P2(1)/n, a = 9.717(4) Angstrom, b = 12.174(2) Angstrom, c = 13.036(5) Angstrom, beta = 106.51(2)degrees, Z = 2). Reaction of alpha-[CuL1](2+) with either basic hydrogen peroxide or dilute nitrous acid leads to mild reduction of the nitro groups to afford the ketoxime L-3 as its N-based isomeric Cu-II complexes, trans-I [CuL3](ClO4)(2) and trans-II [Cu(L-3)Cl]Cl . 7H(2)O, the latter of which has been characterized structurally: triclinic, <P(1)over bar> a = 10.8441(5) Angstrom, b = 11.6632(9) Angstrom, c = 11.8723(9) Angstrom, alpha = 113.634(7)degrees, beta = 95.744(5), gamma = 94.851(5)degrees Z = 2. Variations in the configurations of the coordinated amines in [CuL1](2+), [CuL2](2+), and [CuL3](2+) have a profound effect on the spectroscopy and electrochemistry of their complexes.

We describe the realization of the super-Reshetikhin-Semenov-Tian-Shansky (RS) algebra in quantum affine superalgebras, thus generalizing the approach of Frenkel and Reshetikhin to the supersymmetric (and twisted) case. The algebraic homomorphism between the super-RS algebra and the Drinfeld current realization of quantum affine superalgebras is established by using the Gauss decomposition technique of Ding and Frenkel. As an application, we obtain Drinfeld realization of quantum affine superalgebra U-q [osp(1/2)((1))] and its degeneration - central extended super-Yangian double DY(h over bar) [osp(1/2)((1))].

The tetrachlorocuprate(II) ion can crystallize in two different structures with the piperazinium dication (pipzH(2)). Both structures contain discrete CuCl42- species. A yellow compound (pipzH(2))[CuCl4]. 2H(2)O (1) is monoclinic (C2/c, Z = 4, a = 10.538(3) Angstrom, b = 7.4312(5) Angstrom, c = 17.281(4) Angstrom, beta = 111.900(10)degrees) and contains the CuCl42- ion as a distorted tetrahedron. A green compound (pipzH(2))(2)[CuCl4]. Cl-2. 3H(2)O (2) is triclinic (P (1) over bar, Z = 2, a = 9.264(3) Angstrom, b = 10.447(2) Angstrom, c = 11.366(2) Angstrom, alpha = 68.38 degrees, beta = 82.86(2)degrees, gamma = 83.05(2)degrees) and contains the CuCl42- ion with a square planar geometry. This latter compound shows thermo/photochromism, changing from green to yellow upon heating or laser irradiation.

Physiological and kinematic data were collected from elite under-19 rugby union players to provide a greater understanding of the physical demands of rugby union. Heart rate, blood lactate and time-motion analysis data were collected from 24 players (mean +/- s((x) over bar): body mass 88.7 +/- 9.9 kg, height 185 +/- 7 cm, age 18.4 +/- 0.5 years) during six competitive premiership fixtures. Six players were chosen at random from each of four groups: props and locks, back row forwards, inside backs, outside backs. Heart rate records were classified based on percent time spent in four zones (>95%, 85-95%, 75-84%, <75% HRmax). Blood lactate concentration was measured periodically throughout each match, with movements being classified as standing, walking, jogging, cruising, sprinting, utility, rucking/mauling and scrummaging. The heart rate data indicated that props and locks (58.4%) and back row forwards (56.2%) spent significantly more time in high exertion (85-95% HRmax) than inside backs (40.5%) and outside backs (33.9%) (P < 0.001). Inside backs (36.5%) and outside backs (38.5%) spent significantly more time in moderate exertion (75-84% HRmax) than props and locks (22.6%) and back row forwards (19.8%) (P < 0.05). Outside backs (20.1%) spent significantly more time in low exertion (< 75% HRmax) than props and locks (5.8%) and back row forwards (5.6%) (P < 0.05). Mean blood lactate concentration did not differ significantly between groups (range: 4.67 mmol.l(-1) for outside backs to 7.22 mmol.l(-1) for back row forwards; P < 0.05). The motion analysis data indicated that outside backs (5750 m) covered a significantly greater total distance than either props and locks or back row forwards (4400 and 4080 m, respectively; P < 0.05). Inside backs and outside backs covered significantly greater distances walking (1740 and 1780 m, respectively; P < 0.001), in utility movements (417 and 475 m, respectively; P < 0.001) and sprinting (208 and 340 m, respectively; P < 0.001) than either props and locks or back row forwards (walking: 1000 and 991 m; utility movements: 106 and 154 m; sprinting: 72 and 94 m, respectively). Outside backs covered a significantly greater distance sprinting than inside backs (208 and 340 m, respectively; P < 0.001). Forwards maintained a higher level of exertion than backs, due to more constant motion and a large involvement in static high-intensity activities. A mean blood lactate concentration of 4.8-7.2 mmol.l(-1) indicated a need for 'lactate tolerance' training to improve hydrogen ion buffering and facilitate removal following high-intensity efforts. Furthermore, the large distances (4.2-5.6 km) covered during, and intermittent nature of, match-play indicated a need for sound aerobic conditioning in all groups (particularly backs) to minimize fatigue and facilitate recovery between high-intensity efforts.

The macrocyclic compounds (6-(4',6'-diamino-1',3',5'-triazinyl)-1,4,6,8,11-pentaazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) triperchlorate dihydrate, [Cu(HL2)](ClO4)(3). 2H(2)O, (6-(6'-amino-4'-oxo-1'H-1',3',5'-triazinyl)-1,4,6,8,11-pentaazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) diperchlorate hydrate, [CuL3](ClO4)(2). H2O, and [(6-(4',6'-dioxo-1'H-1',3',5'-triazinyl) 1,4,6,8,11-pentaazacyclotetradecane)copper(II)] diperchlorate, [CuL4](ClO4)(2), have been synthesized. The macrocycles synthesized contain respectively pendant melamine, ammeline,and ammelide rings. The X-ray cyrstallographic analyses of [Cu(HL2)](ClO4)(3). 2H(2)O, triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 9.489(10) Angstrom, b = 12.340(2) Angstrom, c = 24.496(4) Angstrom, alpha = 87.74(10)degrees beta = 85.51(10)degrees gamma = 70.95(10)degrees and Z = 4, and {[CuL3](ClO4)(2). H2O}2, monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 18.624(8) Angstrom, b = 17.160(2) Angstrom, c = 15.998(6) Angstrom, beta = 117.82(2)degrees, and Z = 4, are reported. The structure of [Cu(HL2)](ClO4)(3). 2H(2)O shows the formation of linear tapes, formed by a combination of hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions. The structure of [CuL3](ClO4)(2). H2O displays formation of dimers, formed by a coordinate bond from the oxygen in one molecule to the copper atom of another. The tautomeric forms of the ammeline and ammelide moieties have been determined. The potential of these compounds as subunits for cocrystallization has been investigated.

Our laboratory is interested in devising methods to identify functions for the vast numbers of arabidopsis genes now available. For this purpose, we have constructed a set of binary vectors that will allow the quick production of transgenic arabidopsis plants containing either sense or antisense copies of EST clones obtained from the PRL2 library. These vectors are based on the pSLJ series containing the bialophos resistance (BAR) gene that confers resistance to the herbicide BASTA. Tn addition, our vectors contain a 35S CaMV promoter-polylinker-nos terminator cassette that allows the direct cloning of arabidopsis ESTs in either antisense (pAOV and pAOV2) or sense (pSOV and pSOV2) orientation. We also describe the construction of two additional vectors conferring BASTA resistance and containing the pBluescript polylinker in both orientations inserted between the 35S CaMV promoter and nos terminator (pKMB and pSMB).
