Basic experiments were conducted in a near full-scale broad-crested weir. Detailed velocity and pressure measurements were performed for two configurations. The results showed the rapid flow distribution at the upstream end of the weir, while an overhanging crest design may affect the flow field. The study showed further that large vortical structures might be observed immediately upstream of the weir and impact adversely on the overflow.

Particle flow patterns were investigated for wet granulation and dry powder mixing in ploughshare mixers using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). In a 4-1 mixer, calcium carbonate with mean size 45 mum was granulated using a 50 wt.% solution of glycerol and water as binding fluid, and particle movement was followed using a 600-mum calcium hydroxy-phosphate tracer particle. In a 20-1 mixer, dry powder flow was studied using a 600-mum resin bead tracer particle to simulate the bulk polypropylene powder with mean size 600 mum. Important differences were seen between particle flow patterns for wet and dry systems. Particle speed relative to blade speed was lower in the wet system than in the dry system, with the ratios of average particle speed to blade tip speed for all experiments in the range 0.01-015. In the axial plane, the same particle motion was observed around each blade; this provides a significant advance for modelling flow in ploughshare mixers. For the future, a detailed understanding of the local velocity, acceleration and density variations around a plough blade will reveal the effects of flow patterns in granulating systems on the resultant distribution of granular product attributes such as size, density and strength. The microstructure of a carbon molecular sieve membrane (CMSM) is characterized using adsorption equilibrium information. The pore size distributions of the CMSM derived from N-2 and CH4 adsorption isotherm are found to be consistent with each other and in agreement with the results of gas permeation experiments as well as the general characteristics of such molecular sieve materials. Electron backscattering diffraction has been applied on polycrystalline diamond films grown using microwave plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition on silicon substrate, in order to provide a map of the individual diamond grains, grain boundary, and the crystal orientation of discrete crystallites. The nucleation rate and orientation are strongly affected by using a voltage bias on the substrate to influence and enhance the nucleation process, the bias enhanced nucleation process. In this work, the diamond surface is mapped using electron backscattering diffraction, then a layer of a few microns is ion milled away exposing a lower layer for analysis and so on. This then permits a three dimensions reconstruction of the film texture.
