This paper presents a corpus-based descriptive analysis of the most prevalent transfer effects and connected speech processes observed in a comparison of 11 Vietnamese English speakers (6 females, 5 males) and 12 Australian English speakers (6 males, 6 females) over 24 grammatical paraphrase items. The phonetic processes are segmentally labelled in terms of IPA diacritic features using the EMU speech database system with the aim of labelling departures from native-speaker pronunciation. An analysis of prosodic features was made using ToBI framework. The results show many phonetic and prosodic processes which make non-native speakers’ speech distinct from native ones. The corpusbased methodology of analysing foreign accent may have implications for the evaluation of non-native accent, accented speech recognition and computer assisted pronunciation- learning.

Transmural extent of infarction (TME) may be an important determinant of functional recovery and remodeling. Recent animal data suggest that strain rate imaging (SRI) maybe able to identify subendocardial ischemia. We compared SRI and cyclic variation of integrated backscatter (CVIB) for predicting TME in the quantitative assessment of regional subepicardial function. Forty-nine (n = 49) postmyocardial infarct patients (61±10 years, EF 41±10%) underwent tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) and contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). A15 mm×2mm sampling volume (tracked to wall motion) was placed over the long axis subepicardial region of each segment during TDE offline analysis to measure peak longitudinal systolic strain rate (SR), peak longitudinal systolic strain (PS), and CVIB. Findingswere compared with TME classified into two categories of scar thickness by CMR: Non-transmural (TME≤50%), and transmural (TME > 50%). Of 213 segments identified with resting wall motion abnormalities, 145 segments showed delayed hyperenhancement on CMR. SR, PS and CVIB were similar with no significant differences between transmural and non-transmural infarcts regardless of the echo modality.

Serial reduction in scar thickness has been shown in animal models. We sought whether this reduction in scar thickness may be a result of dilatation of the left ventricle (LV) with stretching and thinning of the wall. Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) was performed to delineate radial scar thickness in 25 patients (age 63±10, 21 men) after myocardial infarction. The LV was divided into 16 segts and the absolute radial scar thickness (ST) and percentage scar to total wall thickness (%ST) were measured. Regional end diastolic (EDV) and end systolic volumes (ESV) of corresponding segments were measured on CMRI. All patients underwent revascularization and serial changes in ST, %ST, and regional volumes were assessed with a mean follow up of 15±5 months. CMRI identified a total of 93 scar segments. An increase in EDV or ESV was associated with a serial reduction inST(versusEDV, r =−0.3, p = 0.01; versusESV, r =−0.3, p = 0.005) and%ST(versusEDV, r =−0.2, p = 0.04; versus ESV, r =−0.3, p = 0.001). For segts associated with a positive increase in EDV (group I) or ESV (group II) there was a significant decrease in ST and %ST, but in those segts with stable EDV (group III) or ESV (group IV) there were no significant changes in ST and %ST (Table).

Cylindrospermopsin (CYN), a potent cyanobacterial hepatotoxin produced by Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and other cyanobacteria, is regularly found in water supplies in many parts of the world and has been associated with the intoxication of humans and livestock.Water treatment via chlorination can degrade the toxin effectively but result in the production of several byproducts. In this study, male and female Balb/c mice were injected via the intraperitoneal (IP) route with a single dose of 10 mg/kg 5-chlorouracil and 10 mg/kg 5-chloro-6-hydroxymethyluracil; these two compounds are the predicted chlorinated degradation products of CYN.DNA was isolated from the mouse livers and examined for strand breakage by alkaline gel electrophoresis (pH 12). The median molecular length (MML) of the DNA distributed in the gel was determined by estimating the midpoint of the DNA size distribution by densitometry. The toxicity of 5-chlorouracil (as measured by DNA strand breakage) was significantly influenced by time from dosing. There was no significant difference in MML between mice dosed with 5-chloro-6-hydroxymethyluracil and the controls. In another experiment, mice were dosed with 0, 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg/kg body weight 5-chlorouracil and 0, 0.1, 1, 10 and 20 mg/kg 5-chloro-6-hydroxymethyluracil via IP injection. The heart, liver, kidney, lung and spleen were removed, fixed and examined under electron microscopy. Liver was the main target organ. The EM results revealed marked distortion on the nuclear membrane of liver cells in mice dosed with 1.0 mg/kg 5-chlorouracil or 10 mg/kg 5-chloro-6-hydroxymethyluracil, or higher.

We describe the production of BECs on a new type of atom chip based on silver foil. Our atom chip is fabricated with thick wires capable of carrying currents of several amperes without overheating. The silver surface is highly reflective to light resonant with optical transitions used for Rb. The pattern on the chip consists of two parallel Z-trap wires, capable of producing two-wire guide, and two additional endcap wires for varying the axial confinement. Condensates are produced in magnetic microtraps formed within 1 mm of surface of the chip. We have observed the fragmentation of cold atom clouds when brought close to the chip surface. This results from a perturbed trapping potential caused by nanometer deviations of the current path through the wires on the chip. We present results of fragmentation of cold clouds at distances below 100 µm from the wires and investigate the origin of the deviating current. The fragmentation has different characteristics to those seen with copper conductors. The dynamics of atoms in these microtraps is also investigated. ©2005 COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Geological sequestration of CO2 is a technically feasible and potentially economic option for significantly and safely reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with CO2 injection already practiced in Canada and the USA to enhance crude oil production. The Enhanced Coalbed Methane (ECBM) process is seen as the next most economical sequestration options. The authors estimate an incremental methane recovery factor from 20% to 50%, depending on coal rank and seam depth. Others have estimated the potential to increase worldwide CBM production, utilising ECBM, by 18 Trillion cubic meters, while simultaneously sequestering 345 Giga tonnes of CO2. This paper presents technical and economic factors to consider for developing a commercial ECBM project. Technical factors include: geostructural and hydrogeological issues, geochemical reactions, stressed and competitive sorption, counter-diffusion, effective and relative 4-D coal permeability and methane recovery levels. Key economic factors are injectant acquisition price, sale price of methane and the level of carbon credits.

CO2 Geosequestration is seen by many worldwide scientists and engineers as a leading prospective solution to the global warming problem arising from excessive CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 geosequestration in coal seams has two important strategic benefits: the process has an extremely low risk of leakage, due to the adsorbed state of the CO2 and the known reservoir context of essentially-zero leakage into which it is be injected; the second benefit arises from the valuable by-product, clean burning coalbed methane gas. This paper presents the authors’ experience, knowledge and perspective on what coal properties and engineering processes would favour implementing a demonstration or commercial CO2 storage-in-coal project, in Queensland, Australia. As such, it may be considered a template for screening studies to select the optimum coal seam reservoir, and for preliminary studies in designing the injection system and predicting production response to the technology. The paper concludes by examining the current knowledge gaps of CO2 geosequestration in coal, identifying further basic and applied research topics.

Real-time control programs are often used in contexts where (conceptually) they run forever. Repetitions within such programs (or their specifications) may either (i) be guaranteed to terminate, (ii) be guaranteed to never terminate (loop forever), or (iii) may possibly terminate. In dealing with real-time programs and their specifications, we need to be able to represent these possibilities, and define suitable refinement orderings. A refinement ordering based on Dijkstra's weakest precondition only copes with the first alternative. Weakest liberal preconditions allow one to constrain behaviour provided the program terminates, which copes with the third alternative to some extent. However, neither of these handles the case when a program does not terminate. To handle this case a refinement ordering based on relational semantics can be used. In this paper we explore these issues and the definition of loops for real-time programs as well as corresponding refinement laws.
