A new integrable model which is a variant of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is proposed. The integrability of the model is verified by presenting the associated quantum R-matrix which satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation. We argue that the new model possesses the SO(4) algebra symmetry, which contains a representation of the eta-pairing SU(2) algebra and a spin SU(2) algebra. Additionally, the algebraic Bethe ansatz is studied by means of the quantum inverse scattering method. The spectrum of the Hamiltonian, eigenvectors, as well as the Bethe ansatz equations, are discussed. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

A two-dimensional numerical simulation model of interface states in scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM) measurements of p-n junctions is presented-In the model, amphoteric interface states with two transition energies in the Si band gap are represented as fixed charges to account for their behavior in SCM measurements. The interface states are shown to cause a stretch-out-and a parallel shift of the capacitance-voltage characteristics in the depletion. and neutral regions of p-n junctions, respectively. This explains the discrepancy between - the SCM measurement and simulation near p-n junctions, and thus modeling interface states is crucial for SCM dopant profiling of p-n junctions. The Antarctic nemertean worm, Parborlasia corrugatus, exhibits gigantism, reaching at least 100 g, yet lacks any specialised respiratory organs. The diffusion of oxygen into this worm occurs cutaneously. We examined the metabolic rate of P. corrugatus at -1degreesC in response to decreasing ambient PO2. As the PO2 of the water decreased. so did the metabolic rate of P. corrugatus, indicating that this nemertean worm is an extreme example of an oxyconformer. When the water PO2 decreased below about 120 mmHg, the normally short, round worms became elongated and extremely flattened. This behavioural mechanism would allow for an increase in surface area of the skin, thereby facilitating the diffusion of oxygen.

This paper examines occupational performance in Australia across three racial groups in Australia: Indigenous Australians; Asian people, defined as all those whose language spoken at home was either Chinese, Vietnamese or other forms of a South-east or East Asian language; and white people, defined as the residual category. The paper has as its starting point, observed differences in occupational attainment among the three groups in Australia and sets out to account for these observed differences on the basis of both race and non-racial attributes such as, age, education and area of residence.

The contemporary Vampire Subculture can be defined as a multi-faceted, socio-religious movement with its own distinct collective community and network of participants who share a similar belief system and customary lifestyle that reflect their concept of the vampire. The Vampire Subculture consists of individuals who profess to be 'real vampires', vampire communities of like-minded persons, 'blood-donors' who willingly allow vampires to partake of them, occult-based and mystical-orientated groups that appeal to their spirituality, the blood fetishists, and the live-action vampire role-players. In response, a Christian counter-movement of self-proclaimed 'vampire-slayers' has emerged that actively opposes the vampire subculture and its beliefs and practices. The socio-religious nature of the Vampire Subculture can be best described as a Segmented, Polycentric and Integrated Network of participants.

The interrelationship between myofibroblasts and fibrogenic growth factors in the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis is poorly defined. A temporal and spatial analysis of myofibroblasts, their proliferation and death, and presence of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and platelet-derived growth factor-B (PDGF-B) was carried out in an established rodent model in which chronic renal scarring and fibrosis occurs after healed renal papillary necrosis (RPN), similar to that seen with analgesic nephropathy. Treated and control groups (N = 6 and 4, respectively) were compared at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. A positive relationship was found between presence of tubulo-interstitial myofibroblasts and development of fibrosis. Apoptotic myofibroblasts were identified in the interstitium and their incidence peaked 2 weeks after treatment. Levels of interstitial cell apoptosis and fibrosis were negatively correlated over time (r = -0.57, p < 0.01 ), suggesting that as apoptosis progressively failed to limit myofibroblast numbers, fibrosis increased. In comparison with the diminishing apoptosis in the interstitium, the tubular epithelium had progressively increasing levels of apoptosis over time, indicative of developing atrophy of nephrons. TGF-beta1 protein expression had a close spatial and temporal association with fibrosis and myofibroblasts, whilst PDGF-B appeared to have a closer link with populations of other chronic inflammatory cells such as infiltrating lymphocytes. Peritubular myofibroblasts were often seen near apoptotic cells in the tubular epithelium, suggestive of a paracrine toxic effect of factor/s secreted by the myofibroblasts. In vitro , TGF-beta1 was found to be toxic to renal tubular epithelial cells. These findings suggest an interaction between myofibroblasts, their deletion by apoptosis, and the presence of the fibrogenic growth factor TGF-beta1 in renal fibrosis, whereby apoptotic deletion of myofibroblasts could act as a controlling factor in progression of fibrosis.

Friedreich ataxia (FA) Is caused by decreased frataxin expression that results in mitochondrial iron (Fe) overload. However, the role of frataxin in mammalian Fe metabolism remains unclear. In this investigation we examined the function of frataxin in Fe metabolism by implementing a well-characterized model of erythroid differentiation, namely, Friend cells induced using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). We have characterized the changes in frataxin expression compared to molecules that play key roles in Fe metabolism (the transferrin receptor [TfR] and the Fe transporter Nramp2) and hemoglobinization (beta-globin). DMSO induction of hemoglobinization results in a marked decrease in frataxin gene (Frda) expression and protein levels. To a lesser extent, Nramp2 messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were also decreased on erythroid differentiation, whereas TfR and beta-globin mRNA levels increased. Intracellular Fe depletion using desferrioxamine or pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone, which chelate cytoplasmic or cytoplasmic and mitochondrial Fe pools, respectively, have no effect on frataxin expression. Furthermore, cytoplasmic or mitochondrial Fe loading of induced Friend cells with ferric ammonium citrate, or the heme synthesis inhibitor, succinylacetone, respectively, also had no effect on frataxin expression. Although frataxin has been suggested by others to be a mitochondrial ferritin, the lack of effect of intracellular Fe levels on frataxin expression is not consistent with an Fe storage role. Significantly, protoporphyrin IX down-regulates frataxin protein levels, suggesting a regulatory role of frataxin in Fe or heme metabolism. Because decreased frataxin expression leads to mitochondrial Fe loading in FA, our data suggest that reduced frataxin expression during erythroid differentiation results in mitochondrial Fe sequestration for heme biosynthesis. Recent research in Australia and overseas has suggested that we are witnessing a convergence of men's and women's time on domestic labour activities. But there is disagreement about whether this is due to women reducing their time on housework or men increasing their time on housework. This article addresses these issues using national survey data collected in Australia in 1986, 1993 and 1997. The results show some changes in the proportional responsibilities of men and women in the home with men reporting a greater share of traditional indoor activities. But overall both men and women are spending less time on housework. In particular, women's time on housework has declined by six hours per week since 1986. Hence, while the gender gap between men's and women's involvement in the home is getting smaller, it is not the result of men increasing their share of the load, but is due to the large decline in women's time spent on domestic labour. There is also evidence of change in the relationship. between paid and unpaid work for women. Women's hours of,paid labour had a greater impact on their involvement in domestic labour in 1997 compared to a decade earlier. The article concludes that women's increased labour force involvement in combination with changing patterns and styles, of consumption is leading to some changes in the gender-division:of household labour, but not in the direction anticipated by earlier commentators on the domestic division of labour.

Tissues of the Australian native plant species Hakea actities (Proteaceae) contain numerous metabolites and structural compounds that hinder the isolation of nucleic acids. Separate RNA and genomic DNA extraction procedures were developed to isolate high quality nucleic acids from H. actities. Total RNA was extracted from leaves, roots and cluster roots of H. actities grown in low nutrient levels. Cluster root formation in H. actities only occurs when the plants are grown in low nutrient concentrations. However, under these conditions, nucleic acid extraction becomes increasingly difficult. The new procedures are faster than many of the published nucleic acid extraction protocols, and avoid the use of hazardous chemicals. The RNA extraction method was used successfully on another Australian species and a crop species, suggesting that the procedure is useful for molecular studies of a broad range of plants.

This article proposes a more accurate approach to dopant extraction using combined inverse modeling and forward simulation of scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM) measurements on p-n junctions. The approach takes into account the essential physics of minority carrier response to the SCM probe tip in the presence of lateral electric fields due to a p-n junction. The effects of oxide fixed charge and interface state densities in the grown oxide layer on the p-n junction samples were considered in the proposed method. The extracted metallurgical and electrical junctions were compared to the apparent electrical junction obtained from SCM measurements. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The Las Canadas caldera is a nested collapse caldera formed by the successive migration and collapse of shallow magmatic chambers. Among the pyroclastic products of this caldera are phonolitic fallout deposits that crop out in the caldera wall and on the extracaldera slopes. These deposits exhibit an uninterrupted facies gradation from nonwelded to lava-like and record continuous volcanic deposition. Densely welded and lava-like facies result from the extreme attenuation and complete homogenization of juvenile clasts that destroy original clast outlines and any evidence of fallout deposition. Agglutination contributes significantly to the final degree of flattening observed in the welded facies. After deposition, rheomorphic flowage occurs. Emplacement temperatures for one of the welding sequences are calculated from magmatic temperatures and a model of tephra cooling during fallout. Results are 486 degreesC for the nonwelded facies and 740 degreesC for the moderately welded facies. For the same welding sequence, a cooling time between 25 and 54 days is estimated from published experimental and computational data as the possible duration of welding and rheomorphism. Following deposition and agglutination, the lava-like pyroclastic facies had the rheological properties of viscous lavas and flowed down the outer slopes away from the caldera. Some lava-like masses detached from proximal areas to more distal regions. During deposition, the eruptive style evolved from Plinian fallout to fountain-fed spatter deposition. This evolution was accompanied by a decrease in explosive power and a lower height of the eruptive column, which produce higher emplacement temperatures and more effective heat retention of pyroclasts.

The exact description of the thermodynamics of solutions has been used to describe, without approximation, the distribution of all the components of an incompressible solution in a centrifuge cell at sedimentation equilibrium. Thermodynamic parameters describing the interactions between solute components of known molar mass can be obtained by direct analysis of the experimental data. Interpretation of the measured thermodynamic parameters in terms of molecular interactions requires that an arbitrary distinction be made between nonassociative forces, like hard-sphere volume-exclusion and mean-field electrostatic repulsion or attraction, and specific short-range forces of association that give rise to the formation of molecular aggregates. Provided the former can be accounted for adequately, the effects of the latter can be elucidated in the form of good estimates of the equilibrium constants for the reactions of aggregation.

A well-preserved palynoflora is reported from within a cored interval of a coal-exploratory borehole (1-UN-23-PI of the Geological Survey of Brazil) in the southern part of the Parnaiba Basin, northeastern Brazil. The sample studied is from the lower portion of the Piaui Formation. Its palynoflora is characterized by particular abundance of the trilete cavate/pseudosaccate miospores Spelaeotriletes triangulus Neves and Owens, 1966 and S. arenaceus Neves and Owens, 1966, together with cingulizonate forms mainly attributable to Vallatisporites Hacquebard, 1957 and Cristatisporites R. Potonie and Kremp emend. Butterworth et al., 1964. Radially and bilaterally symmetrical monosaccate pollen grains are also well-represented, chiefly by Plicatipollenites Lele, 1964 and Potonieisporites Bhardwaj, 1954, respectively. Taeniate grains (i.e., monosaccates and bisaccates) are relatively minor constituents of the palynoflora; no marine microplankton were encountered. Several species are described in detail : the trilete apiculate spores Brevitriletes levis (Balme and Hennelly) Bharadwaj and Srivastava, 1969 and Horriditriletes uruguaiensis (Marques-Toigo) Archangelsky and Gamerro, 1979; and the taeniate pollen grains Meristocorpus ostentus sp. nov. and Lahirites segmentatus sp. nov. A Pennsylvanian (Late Carboniferous : late Westphalian) age is adduced for the palynoflora via its correlation with part of the Tapajos Group (specifically, the upper Itaituba Formation) of the Amazonas Basin in northern Brazil. The entirely land-derived palynomorphs, associated with abundant plant debris, corroborate previous suggestions that the lower part of the Piaui Formation accumulated in a nonmarine setting under conditions of aridity.

Groupers (Epinephelinae) are prominent marine fishes distributed in the warmer waters of the world. Review of the literature suggests that trematodes are known from only 62 of the 159 species and only 9 of 15 genera; nearly 90% of host-parasite combinations have been reported only once or twice. All 20 families and all but 7 of 76 genera of trematodes found in epinephelines also occur in non-epihephelines. Only 12 genera of trematodes are reported from both the Atlantic-Eastern Pacific and the Indo-West Pacific. Few (perhaps no) species are credibly cosmopolitan but some have wide distributions across the Indo-West Pacific. The hierarchical 'relatedness' of epinephelines as suggested by how they share trematode taxa (families, genera, species) shows little congruence with what is known of their phylogeny. The major determinant of relatedness appears to be geographical proximity. Together these attributes suggest that host-parasite coevolution has contributed little to the evolution of trematode communities of epinephelines. Instead, they appear to have arisen through localized episodes of host-switching, presumably both into and out of the epinephelines. The Epinephelinae may well be typical of most groups of marine fishes both in the extent to which their trematode parasites are known and in that, apparently, co-evolution has contributed little to the evolution of their communities of trematodes.
