The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of shear history on activated sludge flocculation dynamics and to model the observed relationships using population balances. Activated sludge flocs are exposed to dramatic changes in the shear rate within the treatment process, as they pass through localised high and low mixing intensities within the aeration basin and are cycled through the different unit operations of the treatment process. We will show that shear history is a key factor in determining floc size, and that the floc size varies irreversibly with changes in shear rate. A population balance model of the flocculation process is also introduced and evaluated.

This paper describes a feasibility study of a for lactic acid production integrated with are treatment of wastewater from an industrial starch plant. Rhizopus oryzae two strains, Rhizopus arrhizus and Rhizopus oligosporus were tested with respect to their capability to carry out simultaneous saccharification and fermentation to lactic acid using potato wastewater. Rhizopus arrhizus DAR 36017 was identified as a suitable strain that demonstrated a high capacity for starch saccharification and lactic acid synthesis. The optimal conditions, in terms of pH, temperature and starch concentration, for lactic acid production were determined. The selected fungal strain grew well in a pH range from 3.0 to 7.0. The addition of CaCO(3)10 g dm(-3) maintained the pH at 5.0-6.0 and significantly enhanced lactic acid production. Kinetic study revealed that almost complete starch saccharification and a lactic acid yield of 450g kg(-1) could be achieved in 20 h and 28 h cultivation, respectively. The maximum lactic acid production 21 g dm(-3) and mycelial biomass (1.7 g dm(-3)) were obtained at 30degreesC. Besides the multiple bioproducts, total removal of suspended solids and 90% reduction of COD were achieved in a single no-aseptic operation. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

High concentrations of ammonium (up to 0.1 cmol/kg) have been observed below 1 m depth in a Vertosol soil near Warra in south-eastern Queensland. This study examined whether ammonium leaching could be responsible for the ammonium accumulation observed in the Warra soil. This was done by using quantity/intensity (Q/I) relationships to compare the ammonium retention capacity of the Warra soil with other similar soils throughout the region that did not contain elevated subsoil ammonium concentrations. Analysis of Q/I curves revealed that in the concentration range studied, the amount of ammonium retained on high affinity adsorption sites in all 3 soils was low, and the Warra soil was not significantly different from the other 2 soils. The ability of the soils to retain ammonium in the soil solution against leaching [i.e. their potential buffer capacity (PBC)] did differ between soils and was greatest at Warra. This indicates that at any one time the Warra soil holds more ammonium on the exchange complex and less in solution than the other soils examined. It was concluded that ammonium is no more likely to leach through the surface horizons of the Warra soil than the other soils examined. Indeed, the data indicated that the Warra soil probably has greater capacity to retain ammonium against leaching due to its greater PBC. Consequently, it is considered unlikely that leaching of ammonium has been a major contributor to the subsoil ammonium concentrations at Warra.

A mathematical model that describes the operation of a sequential leach bed process for anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) is developed and validated. This model assumes that ultimate mineralisation of the organic component of the waste occurs in three steps, namely solubilisation of particulate matter, fermentation to volatile organic acids (modelled as acetic acid) along with liberation of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and methanogenesis from acetate and hydrogen. The model incorporates the ionic equilibrium equations arising due to dissolution of carbon dioxide, generation of alkalinity from breakdown of solids and dissociation of acetic acid. Rather than a charge balance, a mass balance on the hydronium and hydroxide ions is used to calculate pH. The flow of liquid through the bed is modelled as occurring through two zones-a permeable zone with high flushing rates and the other more stagnant. Some of the kinetic parameters for the biological processes were obtained from batch MSW digestion experiments. The parameters for flow model were obtained from residence time distribution studies conducted using tritium as a tracer. The model was validated using data from leach bed digestion experiments in which a leachate volume equal to 10% of the fresh waste bed volume was sequenced. The model was then tested, without altering any kinetic or flow parameters, by varying volume of leachate that is sequenced between the beds. Simulations for sequencing/recirculating 5 and 30% of the bed volume are presented and compared with experimental results. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of this study is to quantity the effect of filter bed depth and solid waste inputs on the performance of small-scale vermicompost filter beds that treat the soluble contaminants within domestic wastewater. The study also aims to identify environmental conditions within the filters by quantifying the oxygen content and pH of wastewater held within it. Vermicompost is being utilised within commercially available on-site domestic waste treatment systems however, there are few reported studies that have examined this medium for the purpose of wastewater treatment. Three replicate small-scale reactors were designed to enable wastewater sampling at five reactor depths in 10-cm intervals. The surface of each reactor received household solid organic waste and 1301 m(-2) per day of raw domestic wastewater. The solid waste at the filter bed surface leached oxygen demand into the wastewater flowing through it. The oxygen demand was subsequently removed in lower reactor sections. Both nitrification and denitrification occurred in the bed. The extent of denitrification was a function of BOD leached from the solid waste. The environmental conditions measured within the bed were found to be suitable for earthworms living within them. Potential denitrification rates were measured using the acetylene block method, in sediments collected from streams in the sub-tropical, south-east Queensland region of Australia. Our aim was to estimate how much nitrogen could be removed from lotic systems by denitrification at the regional scale. Denitrification measured at 65 sites in August and September from a catchment of 22700 km(2) was extrapolated to all streams and rivers in the region based on the sediment area available for denitrification. Denitrification rates ranged between 4 and 950 mumol N m(-2) h(-1), with most sites having rates below 150 mumol N m(-2) h(-1). Based on these results, the current study estimates that a total of 305 t of nitrogen could be denitrified per year from all streams and rivers in the region, representing 6% of the total annual nitrogen load from surrounding land use. During baseflow conditions, when nitrogen loads to streams are low, the proportion of nitrogen removed through denitrification would be substantially higher, in some cases removing 100% of the nitrogen load. It is proposed that denitrification is an important process maintaining low concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen under baseflow conditions and is therefore likely to enhance nitrogen limitation of primary production in this region.
