The pharmacokinetics of metronidazole was determined after a single intramuscular (i.m.) dose of 30 mg.kg(-1)-body weight in five camels, sheep and goats. Marked differences were found between the three species in some of the kinetic parameters. For example, the elimination half-lives t(1/2); (h) in camels, sheep and goats were 10.0, 6.21 and 5.87, respectively. The drug maximum concentrations in plasma, C-max (mg.ml(-1)), were 28.3, 54.6 and 54.4 in camels, sheep and goats, respectively. The time to reach C-max, t(max) (h), were 5, 4 and 2 in camels, sheep and goats, respectively. The mean residence times (MRT; h) in camels, sheep and goats were 16.7, 10.8 and 8.64, respectively. In the light of the present kinetic data and known microbial sensitivities of metronidazole, we recommend an i.m. dose of 15 mg.kg(-1) in camels and 10 mg.kg(-1) in sheep and boats. every 12 h.

The fatty acid composition of longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle and adipose tissues (subcutaneous and intermuscular fat) from castrated and entire male Boer goat bucks was investigated. Sixty Boer bucks in groups of between three and five animals were slaughtered at 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 kg live weight (5 and 15 kg animals were not castrated). The fatty acid composition of LT muscle from castrated and entire Boers was significantly affected by slaughter weight. The fatty acid content of LT muscle and subcutaneous and intermuscular fat from both castrated and entire Boer bucks was primarily composed of oleic acid followed by palmitic and stearic acid. Both oleic and palmitic acid increased with slaughter weight whereas stearic acid decreased. LT muscle from castrated Boer bucks contained higher amounts of desirable fatty acids. In contrast to slaughter weight, castration of Boer bucks resulted in only minor changes in fatty acid composition of adipose tissues. It can be concluded that slaughter weight plays a role in changing the fatty acid composition of LT muscle and adipose tissues from Boer bucks.

The use of Judas goats to locate remnant animals is a potentially powerful tool for enhancing goat-eradication efforts, which are especially important to island conservation. However, current Judas goat methodology falls short of its potential efficacy. Female Judas goats are often pregnant at the time of deployment or become impregnated in the field; pregnant females leave associated goats to give birth, causing downtime of Judas goat operations. Further, male Judas goats may inseminate remnant females. Sterilising Judas goats prior to deployment removes these inefficiencies. Here, we describe two methods (epididymectomy for males and tubal occlusion for females) that sterilise Judas goats while still maintaining sexual motivation and other behaviours associated with intact animals. These surgeries are straightforward, time efficient, and may be conducted in the field by staff with minimal training. Given the widespread and deleterious impacts of non-native herbivores to ecosystems and the importance of Judas operations in detecting animals at low densities, sterilisation and termination of pregnancy should be applied routinely in Judas goat (and possibly other species) programs to increase the efficacy of low-density control operations and eradication campaigns.

Goat meat is an important source of animal protein and Boer goats are the most widespread breed of meat goats. Cholesterol in meat is a potential cause of human disease and little is known about the cholesterol concentration in different goat muscles. As animals gain bodyweight the amount of cholesterol in their tissues generally increases and can vary for different tissues. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of slaughter weight and muscle type on total cholesterol concentrations in three muscles (longissimus thoracic, infraspinatus and biceps femoris) taken from castrated male Boer goats in Australia. The goats were grazed on a mixture of native pasture and Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) and had access to lucerne and commercial goat pellets (CP 18%; ME 12.3 MJ/kg DM). The muscles were dissected from 24 goats slaughtered in groups of 4 or 5 animals at 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 kg liveweight. Total cholesterol concentrations were then determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total cholesterol concentrations decreased (P < 0.01) with an increase in slaughter weight for the longissimus thoracic, infraspinatus and biceps femoris muscles. Significant differences (P < 0.01) were recorded in the total cholesterol concentrations for the three muscles studied. The average total cholesterol concentrations ranged from 55 to 60 mg/100 g for the longissimus thoracic, 69 to 88 mg/100g for infraspinatus and 65 to 82 mg/100 g for the biceps femoris muscles. These results are important for consumers of goat meat as total cholesterol concentrations vary between different muscles taken from animals slaughtered at different weights and the concentrations are higher in muscles taken from lighter and younger animals. Therefore, health conscious consumers of meat, concerned about the cholesterol content of their diet, should consume meat from the longissimus thoracic muscles of heavier or older goats. The effect of feed restriction on water balance and nutrient utilization was investigated in individually penned Boer x Saanen kids. Twenty-two male Boer x Saanen kids with an initial average live weight (LW) of 15 kg were used. Seven kids were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment (reference animals) and the remainders were allocated to one of the three treatments (0, 30 and 60% restriction) and therefore there were five kids per treatment. The feed intake for the 0% restriction treatment animals determined the intake for the animals in the 30 and 60% restriction treatment. When the animals in the 0% restriction treatment group reached 25 kg LW, the animals in the 30 and 60% restriction treatment groups were also slaughtered. There was a negative relationship between DMI and water intake. The digestibility coefficients for DM, OM, carbohydrates, ash, ether extract, energy, NDF, ADF and lignin did not differ between treatments, whereas the digestibility coefficient for CP was different between treatment groups. The highest metabolic water production was in animals in the 0% restriction treatment group. No significant differences were observed in the composition of gastro-intestinal tract contents of the goats in the different treatments. Lower water retention was found in the animals in the 60% restriction treatment group. The study showed that feed restriction affected water intake, CP digestibility and water retention in the body of the kid goats. This experiment demonstrated that DM:water intake ratio changed when severe feed restriction was applied (60% restriction) and water was freely available. It shows a different pattern of behaviour of penned goats, particularly if feed intake is restricted and perhaps caution is needed to extrapolate results from nutritional and physiological trials in pens to goats at pasture. The bulk of the world's goat population is found in South-East Asia and Africa, where goats are the major source of meat production. Unfortunately, lack of an organized goat meat industry and marketing structure in developing countries is primarily responsible for their poor export earnings compared to those in developed countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Goat meat is leaner than meat from other domestic red meat species as well as being comparable in terms of its nutritional constituents. Furthermore, there are few, if any, religious or cultural taboos limiting the consumption of goat meat. Development of a carcass grading system and a suitable infrastructure in developing countries are some of the key requirements needed to establish a sustainable goat meat industry in the world. With an increase in demand by consumers for low-fat red meat alternatives, the future of the goat meat industry looks promising.
