This checklist is a tool to help local governments prepare for mosquito season and potential mosquito-borne disease outbreaks. It contains recommended items to be considered as part of a Zika readiness plan.

Protect your home against mosquitoes

Mosquitoes develop in water that stands for more than five days. To reduce the mosquito population around your home and property, eliminate all standing water and debris. These tips help eliminate mosquitoes: locate sites where mosquitoes breed ; drain, fill, or get rid of areas that hold water ; protect yourself from biting mosquitoes.

Mosquito-borne diseases can cause brain inflammation (or encephalitis), birth defects, internal bleeding, complications from parasites and even death in some cases.

Zika : how to communicate effectively

Communicating Zika virus preventive behaviors, transmission paths, and the underlying science are challenging. There are many scientific unknowns, an uncertainty of the risk, and tragic consequences for pregnant women and their fetuses. Clear, consistent, and frequent communication from trusted sources and channels makes it easier for people to understand Zika information which can help them to make decisions. Effective communication can support attitudes, norms, and behaviors to prevent the spread of Zika and protect pregnant women.

Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Recipe Cards

These are cards giving recipes for fruit and vegetable dishes. Recipes include: confetti bean salsa, Mediterranean quinoa salad, minty watermelon cucumber salad, quick refrigerator pickles, broccoli salad, apple, cranberry and almond coleslaw, farmers’ market pasta salad, roasted beet and butter bean hummus, spinach and strawberry pecan salad, okra, avocado and tomato salad, plum-berry mint smoothie and crispy baked vegetables.

A Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system is a plan to reduce the risk of safety hazards in food. The HACCP System identifies potential biological, chemical and physical hazards from the time the food enters the facility to when it is served. The Hazard Analysis identifies critical control points based on the ingredients, raw materials and processes. Control measures are then identified, implemented and monitored to ensure the ongoing safety of the finished products.

Palmetto Sites Program 2016 Program Overview

The South Carolina Department of Commerce has initiated the Palmetto Sites Program. During the Palmetto Sites Program, participants will be asked to gather data on the property’s availability, developability, zoning, transportation, and utility infrastructure among other items. Having this information is critical in order to be competitive, and to quickly and accurately respond to requests for proposals. Palmetto Site is a property in which the applicant has accumulated substantial data about the property’s characteristics and infrastructure in order to effectively respond to information requests for industrial projects.
