A Waste Water monitoring program aiming to help decision making is presented. The program includes traditional and inboard sensor sampling, hydrodynamic and water quality modeling and a GIS based database to help the decision making of manager authorities. The focus is in the quality of waters receiving discharges from Waste Water Treatment Plants. Data was used to feed model simulations and produce hydrodynamic, effluent dispersion and ecological results. The system was then used to run different scenarios of discharge flow, concentration and location. The results enable to access the current water quality state of the lagoon and are being used as a decision making tool by the waste water managers in the evaluation phase of the treatment plant project to decide the location and the level of treatment of the discharge.

The predominantly selfing slug species Arion (Carinarion) fasciatus, A. (C.) silvaticus and A. (C.) circumscriptus are native in Europe and have been introduced into North America, where each species consists of a single, homozygous multilocus genotype (strain), as defined by starch gel electrophoresis (SGE) of allozymes. In Europe, the “one strain per species” hypothesis does not hold since polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of allozymes uncovered 46 strains divided over the three species. However, electrophoretic techniques may differ in their ability to detect allozyme variation. Therefore, several Carinarion populations from both continents were screened by applying the two techniques simultaneously on the same individual slugs and enzyme loci. SGE and PAGE yielded exactly the same results, so that the different degree of variation in North American and European populations cannot be attributed to differences in resolving power between SGE and PAGE. We found four A. (C.) silvaticus strains in North America indicating that in this region the “one strain per species” hypothesis also cannot be maintained. Hence, the discrepancies between previous electrophoretic studies on Carinarion are most likely due to sampling artefacts and possible founder effects.

The main objective of the internship is to complete the requirement of the Master program as prescribed by the University of the Algarve. An intern has to prepare an internship report at the end of the internship period but the main objective of the internship is to get experience of the real world organisation. The internship was concluded with the objective of getting practical knowledge in all departments at The Rathbone Hotel. The first responsibility I was assigned during these 12 months of internship period was to assist the Housekeeping Department. Secondly, I was allotted the work of F&B, Accounts, Reservations, Front Office, Back Office and assisting the Assistant Manager was the last task I was assigned during my Internship program. As an intern, I realised that I was successful to gather a lot of significant learning experiences which would be helpful in my future career. Work in all departments of The Rathbone Hotel offered me ample space and opportunities, not only to learn but also to exhibit my skills as a Rathbone team member. I could use my theoretical knowledge in real practice while participating in many discussions. I was actively involved in the revenue meetings where I shared my knowledge and views regarding the performance in Reservations of The Rathbone Hotel. I successfully completed all the assigned duties and passed them over to the supervisor at the end of the internship. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that came along every single day. These lessons that I have learned will be a valuable one for my future activities as well.
