A non-conforming three-node triangular finite element with 18 degree of freedom, is used in conjugation with the Kirchhoff theory for the non-linear analysis of thin composite plate-shell structure. The formulation of the geometrically non-linear analysis is based on an updated Lagrangian formulation associated with the Newton-Raphson iterative technique, which incorporates an automatic arc-length control procedure.

A lability criterion is developed for dynamic metal binding by colloidal ligands with convective diffusion as the dominant mode of mass transport. Scanned stripping chronopotentiometric measurements of Pb(II) and Cd(II) binding by carboxylated latex core-shell particles were in good agreement with the predicted values. The dynamic features of metal ion binding by these particles illustrate that the conventional approach of assuming a smeared-out homogeneous ligand distribution overestimates the lability of a colloidal ligand system. Due to the nature of the spatial distribution of the binding sites, the change in lability of a metal species with changing ligand concentration depends on whether the ligand concentration is varied via manipulation of the pH (degree of protonation) or via the particle concentration. In the former case the local ligand density varies, whereas in the latter case it is constant. This feature provides a useful diagnostic tool for the presence of geometrically constrained binding sites.

This paper deals with a finite formulation baserd on the classical laminated plate tehory, for active control of thin late laminated structures with integrated piezoelectric layers, acting as sensors and actuators. The control is initialized through a previuos optimization of the core of the laminated structure, in order to minimize the vibration amplitude. Also the optimization of the patches position in performed to maximize the piezoelectric actuator efficiency. the simulating annealing mthod is used for these purposes. The finite element model is a single layer triangular nonconforming plate/shell element with 18 degrees of fredom for the generalized displacements, and one electrical potential degree of freedom for each piezoelectric element layer, wich can be surface bonded or imbedded on the laminate. To achieve a mechanism of active control of the structure dynamic response, a feedback control algorirhm is used, coupling the sensor and active piezoelectric layers. To calculate the dynamic response of the laminated structures the Newmark method is considered. The model is applied in the solution of an illustrative case and the results are presented and discussed.

The control is initialized through a previous optimization of the core of the laminated structure, in order to minimize the vibration amplitude. Also the optimization of the patches position is performed to maximize the piezoelectric actuator efficiency. The genetic algorithm is used for these purposes. The finite element model is a single layer triangular plate/shell element with 24 degrees of freedom for the generalized displacements, and one electrical potential degree of freedom for each piezoelectric element layer, which can be surface bonded or embedded on the laminate. To achieve a mechanism of active control of the structure dynamic response, a feedback control algorithm is used, coupling the sensor and active piezoelectric layers. Understanding the genetic composition and mating systems of edge populations provides important insights into the environmental and demographic factors shaping species’ distribution ranges. We analysed samples of the mangrove Avicennia marina from Vietnam, northern Philippines and Australia, with microsatellite markers. We compared genetic diversity and structure in edge (Southeast Asia, and Southern Australia) and core (North and Eastern Australia) populations, and also compared our results with previously published data from core and southern edge populations. Comparisons highlighted significantly reduced gene diversity and higher genetic structure in both margins compared to core populations, which can be attributed to very low effective population size, pollinator scarcity and high environmental pressure at distribution margins. The estimated level of inbreeding was significantly higher in northeastern populations compared to core and southern populations. This suggests that despite the high genetic load usually associated with inbreeding, inbreeding or even selfing may be advantageous in margin habitats due to the possible advantages of reproductive assurance, or local adaptation. The very high level of genetic structure and inbreeding show that populations of A. marina are functioning as independent evolutionary units more than as components of a metapopulation system connected by gene flow. The combinations of those characteristics make these peripheral populations likely to develop local adaptations and therefore to be of particular interest for conservation strategies as well as for adaptation to possible future environmental changes.
