We present searches for gas-phase CO2 features in the ISO-SWS infrared spectra of four deeply embedded massive young stars, which all show strong solid CO2 absorption. The abundance of gas-phase CO2 is at most 2. 10(-7) with respect to H-2, and is less than 5% of that in the solid phase. This is in strong contrast to CO, which is a factor of 10-100 more abundant in the gas than in solid form in these objects. The gas/solid state ratios of CO2, CO and H2O are discussed in terms of the physical and chemical state of the clouds.

This work presents the results of oxygen solubility in ionic liquids based on 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations. Solubility measurements have been carried out in gasometric apparatus at 22, 50 and 90 degrees C under atmospheric pressure. We report the Henry's constants. In general the occurrence of carbon-fluorine bonds and carbon-hydrogen bonds in ionic liquids (ILs) which can create hydrogen bonds with dissolved oxygen, significantly affects the growth of value of solubility constant K-H. Additionally, the stability of ILs towards molecular oxygen was tested. All ILs used in this study were stable in the presence of oxygen and free-radical initiator.

Dissolved CO2 measurements are usually made using a Severinghaus electrode, which is bulky and can suffer from electrical interference. In contrast, optical sensors for gaseous CO2, whilst not suffering these problems, are mainly used for making gaseous (not dissolved) CO2 measurements, due to dye leaching and protonation, especially at high ionic strengths (>0.01 M) and acidity (<pH 4). This is usually prevented by coating the sensor with a gas-permeable, but ion-impermeable, membrane (GPM). Herein, we introduce a highly sensitive, colourimetric-based, plastic film sensor for the measurement of both gaseous and dissolved CO2, in which a pH-sensitive dye, thymol blue (TB) is coated onto particles of hydrophilic silica to create a CO2-sensitive, TB-based pigment, which is then extruded into low density polyethylene (LDPE) to create a GPM-free, i.e. naked, TB plastic sensor film for gaseous and dissolved CO2 measurements. When used for making dissolved CO2 measurements, the hydrophobic nature of the LDPE renders the film: (i) indifferent to ionic strength, (ii) highly resistant to acid attack and (iii) stable when stored under ambient (dark) conditions for >8 months, with no loss of colour or function. Here, the performance of the TB plastic film is primarily assessed as a dissolved CO2 sensor in highly saline (3.5 wt%) water. The TB film is blue in the absence of CO2 and yellow in its presence, exhibiting 50% transition in its colour at ca. 0.18% CO2. This new type of CO2 sensor has great potential in the monitoring of CO2 levels in the hydrosphere, as well as elsewhere, e.g. food packaging and possibly patient monitoring.

Reported herein are measured absolute single, double, and triple charge exchange (CE) cross sections for the highly charged ions (HCIs) Cq+ (q=5,6), Oq+ (q=6,7,8), and Neq+ (q=7,8) colliding with the molecular species H2O, CO, and CO2. Present data can be applied to interpreting observations of x-ray emissions from comets as they interact with the solar wind. As such, the ion impact energies of 7.0q keV (1.62–3.06 keV/amu) are representative of the fast solar wind, and data at 1.5q keV for O6+ (0.56 keV/amu) on CO and CO2 and 3.5q keV for O5+ (1.09 keV/amu) on CO provide checks of the energy dependence of the cross sections at intermediate and typical slow solar wind velocities. The HCIs are generated within a 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source. Absolute CE measurements are made using a retarding potential energy analyzer, with measurement of the target gas cell pressure and incident and final ion currents. Trends in the cross sections are discussed in light of the classical overbarrier model (OBM), extended OBM, and with recent results of the classical trajectory Monte Carlo theory.

The present work investigates the reactivity of the surface species observable by in situ DRIFTS formed over a Pt/ZrO2 during the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. A DRIFTS cell/mass spectrometer system was operated at the chemical steady state during isotopic transients to yield information about the true nature (i.e., main reaction intermediate or spectators) of adsorbates. Only carbonyl and formate species were observed by DRIFTS under reaction conditions; the surface coverage of carbonate species was negligible. Isotopic transient kinetic analyses revealed that formates exchanged uniformly according to a first-order law, suggesting that most formates observed by DRIFTS were of the same reactivity. In addition, the time scale of the exchange of the reaction product CO2 was significantly shorter than that of the surface formates. Therefore, a formate route based on the formates as detected by DRIFTS can be ruled out as the main reaction pathway in the present case. The number of precursors of the reaction product CO2 was smaller than the number of surface Pt atoms, suggesting that carbonyl species or some \

The present work emphasizes the importance of including a full quantitative analysis when in situ operando methods are used to investigate reaction mechanisms and reaction intermediates. The fact that some surface species exchange at a similar rate to the reaction product during isotopic transients is a necessary but not sufficient criterion for participation as a key reaction intermediate. This is exemplified here in the case of highly active low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) catalysts based on gold and platinum. Operando DRIFTS data, isotopic exchanges, and DRIFTS calibration curves relating the concentration of formate species to the corresponding DRIFTS band intensity were combined to obtain a quantitative measure of the specific rate of formate decomposition. Despite displaying a rapid isotopic exchange rate (sometimes as fast as that of the reaction product CO2), the concentration of formates seen by DRIFTS was found to account for at most only 10% of the CO2 produced under the experimental conditions reported herein. These new results obtained on Au/CeZrO4 and Pt/CeO2 preparations (which are among the most active low-temperature WGS catalysts reported to date), led to the same conclusions regarding the minor role of IR-observable formates as those obtained in the case of less active Au/Ce(La)O-2 and Pt/ZrO2 catalysts. The present report investigates the role of formate species as potential reaction intermediates for the WGS reaction (CO + H2O -> CO2 + H-2) over a Pt-CeO2 catalyst. A combination of operando techniques, i.e., in situ diffuse reflectance FT-IR (DRIFT) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS) during steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA), was used to relate the exchange of the reaction product CO2 to that of surface formate species. The data presented here suggest that a switchover from a non-formate to a formate-based mechanism could take place over a very narrow temperature range (as low as 60 K) over our Pt-CeO2 catalyst. This observation clearly stresses the need to avoid extrapolating conclusions to the case of results obtained under even slightly different experimental conditions. The occurrence of a low-temperature mechanism, possibly redox or Mars van Krevelen-like, that deactivates above 473 K because of ceria over-reduction is suggested as a possible explanation for the switchover, similarly to the case of the CO-NO reaction over Cu, I'd and Rh-CeZrOx (see Kaspar and co-workers [1-3]). The attainable steady-state limiting currents and time responses of membrane-covered and membrane-independent gas sensors incorporating different electrode and electrolyte materials have been compared. A new design comprising a membrane-free microelectrode modified with a thin layer of a room temperature ionic liquid is considered. While the use of ionic liquid as electrolyte eliminates the need for a membrane and added supporting electrolyte, the slower diffusion of analyte within the more viscous medium results in slower time responses. Such sensors do, however, have potential application in more extreme operating conditions, such as high temperature and pressure, where traditional solvents would volatise.

Gas-phase photocatalysis of 1,4-dichlorobut-2-enes and 3,4-dichlorobut-1-ene (DCB) has been studied using TiO2 and 3%WO3/TiO2 supported on SiO2. DCB was found to oxidize efficiently over these catalysts; however, only low rates of CO2 formation were observed. With these chlorinated hydrocarbons, the catalysts were found to deactivate over time, probably via the formation of aldol condensation products of chloroacetaldehyde, which is the predominant intermediate observed. The variation in rate and selectivity of the oxidation reactions with O-2 concentration is reported and a mechanism is proposed. Using isotope ratio mass spectrometry, the initial step for the DCB removal has been shown not to be a carbon bond cleavage but is likely to be hydroxyl radical addition to the carbon-carbon double bond.

We present ISO-SWS spectra of the O-rich Mira variable R Gas, showing CO2 in absorption and emission, and H2O in absorption. The CO2 absorption feature is the 01(1)0 - 00(0)0 ro-vibrationaI band at 14.97 mu m. The emission features are the 10(0)0-01(1)0 and 11(1)0 - 02(2)0 re-vibrational transitions at 13.87 and 13.48 mu m respectively. The water absorption spectrum shows the nu(1) and nu(3) re-vibrational bands in the 2.75 - 3 mu m region. Using LTE models, we derive physical parameters for the features. We find the CO2 emission temperature to be similar to 1100 K. We discuss the nature of the CO2 feature at 15 mu m and show that it can be modeled as an emission/absorption band by deviating front thermal equilibrium for the population of the 01(1)0 vibrational level. The H2O absorption spectrum is shown to arise from gas at different temperatures, but can be fit reasonably well with two components at T = 950 K and T = 250 K. The CO2 emission and hut H2O absorption temperatures an similar, suggesting chat these features probe the same region of the inner envelope. We discuss the inner envelope chemistry using molecular equilibrium calculations and recent modeling work by Duari et al. (1999), and find our observations consistent with the results.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD-MS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) were used to investigate CO2 uptake by the Wyodak coal. The adsorption of carbon dioxide on Wyodak coal was studied by DSC. The exotherms evident at low temperatures are associated with the uptake of CO2 suggesting that carbon dioxide interacts strongly with the coal surface. The reduction in the value of the exotherms between the first and second runs for the Wyodak coal suggests that some CO2 is irreversibly bound to the structure even after heating to 200 °C DSC results also showed that adsorption of CO2 on the coal surface is an activated process and presumably at the temperature of the exotherms there is enough thermal energy to overcome the activation energy for adsorption. The adsorption process is instantly pursued by much slower diffusion of the gas molecules into the coal matrix (absorption). Structural rearrangement in coal by CO2 is examined by change in the glass transition temperature of coal after CO2 uptake at different pressures. The amount of gas dissolved in the coal increases with increasing CO2 pressure. TPD-MS showed that CO2 desorption from the Wyodak coal follows a first order kinetic model. Increase in the activation energy for desorption with pre-adsorbed CO2 pressure suggests that higher pressures facilitate the transport of CO2 molecules through the barriers therefore the amount of CO2 uptake by the coal is greater at higher pressures and more attempts are required to desorb CO2 molecules sorbed at elevated pressures. These conclusions were further confirmed by examining the Wyodak coal structure in high pressure CO 2 by SANS.

Using density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic analyses, a new carboxyl mechanism for the water-gas-shift reaction (WGSR) on Au/CeO2(111) is proposed. Many elementary steps in the WGSR are studied using an Au cluster supported on CeO2(111). It is found that (i) water can readily dissociate at the interface between Au and CeO2; (ii) CO2 can be produced via two steps: adsorbed CO on the Au cluster reacts with active OH on ceria to form the carboxyl (COOH) species and then COOH reacts with OH to release CO2; and (iii) two adsorbed H atoms recombine to form molecular H-2 on the Au cluster. Our kinetic analyses show that the turnover frequency of the carboxyl mechanism is consistent with the experimental one while the rates of redox and formate mechanisms are much slower than that of carboxyl mechanism. It is suggested that the carboxyl pathway is likely to be responsible for WGSR on Au/CeO2.
