The electric field enhancement associated with detailed structure within novel optical antenna nanostructures is modeled using the surface integral equation technique in the context of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The antennae comprise random arrays of vertically aligned, multi-walled carbon nanotubes dressed with highly granular Ag. Different types of "hot-spot" underpinning the SERS are identified, but contrasting characteristics are revealed. Those at the outer edges of the Ag grains are antenna driven with field enhancement amplified in antenna antinodes while intergrain hotspots are largely independent of antenna activity. Hot-spots between the tops of antennae leaning towards each other also appear to benefit from antenna amplification.

The ability of millimetre wave and terahertz systems to penetrate clothing is well known. The fact that the transmission of clothing and the reflectivity of the body vary as a function of frequency is less so. Several instruments have now been developed to exploit this capability. The choice of operating frequency, however, has often been associated with the maturity and the cost of the enabling technology rather than a sound systems engineering approach. Top level user and systems requirements have been derived to inform the development of design concepts. Emerging micro and nano technology concepts have been reviewed and we have demonstrated how these can be evaluated against these requirements by simulation using OpenFx. Openfx is an open source suite of 3D tools for modeling, animation and visualization which has been modified for use at millimeter waves. © 2012 SPIE.

We present a simple method of forming a switchable radar cross-section (RCS) in evanescent waveguide. Here, the antenna can be selected to be matched to free space, or to act as an almost perfect reflector of incident energy via a single SPST switch located at the antenna aperture. With the aperture switch open, the antenna is matched over a measured bandwidth of 17.5%, from 2.35 to 2.8 GHz, for reflection coefficient <-10 dB, in 2.725 GHz cutoff waveguide. With the aperture switch closed, a minimum reflection coefficient of -2.5 dB across the bandwidth is observed, proving that the antenna has the capacity to be made RCS reconfigurable. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An electronically reconfigurable Rotman lens is described which generates multiple beams that can be switched from monopulse sum to difference radiation patterns when used in conjunction with a six element Vivaldi antenna array. This is achieved by exploiting the voltage-dependent dielectric anisotropy property of nematic state liquid crystals to provide switched 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shifts in the array feed lines. The viability of the concept is demonstrated by designing an antenna which exhibits dynamically reconfigurable monopulse radiation patterns over the frequency band 6-10 GHz. Measured and simulated results are shown to be in good agreement. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study presents the use of a stepped ground plane as a means to increase the gain and front-to-back ratio of an Archimedean spiral which operates in the frequency range 3–10 GHz. The backing structure is designed to optimize the antenna performance in discrete 1 GHz bands by placing each of the eight metal steps one quarter wavelength below the corresponding active regions of the spiral. Simulated and experimental results show that this type of ground plane can be designed to enhance the antenna performance over the entire 105% operating bandwidth of the spiral.

This article shows practical results of a self-tracking receiving antenna array using a new phase locked loop (PLL) tracking configuration. The PLL configuration differs from other architectures, as it has the new feature of being able to directly track phase modulated signals without requiring an additional unmodulated pilot carrier to be present. The PLLs are used within the antenna array to produce a constant phase intermediate frequency (IF) for each antenna element. These IF's can then be combined in phase, regardless of the angle of arrival of the signal, thus utilizing the antennas array factor. The article's main focus is on the phase jitter performance of the modulation insensitive PLL carrier recovery when tracking phase modulated signals of low signal to noise ratio. From this analysis, it is concluded that the new architecture, when optimally designed, can produce phase jitter performance close to that of a conventional tracking PLL.

This study reports the performance of an Archimedean spiral antenna, which exhibits unidirectional circularly polarized radiation patterns with a peak gain >8 dBic in the lower (2.4–2.485 GHz) and upper (5.15–5.35 and 5.725–5.875 GHz) Wireless local area network frequency bands. The required backlobe suppression and impedance match are obtained by placing a multiresonant high impedance surface (HIS) in close proximity to the radiating aperture. Simulated and measured radiation patterns are shown at the center frequency of all three channels and a comparison of the key performance metrics is made with free space and metal backed antenna arrangements to demonstrate the enhancements which are attributed to the HIS reflector.
