We present a mechanism for cooling atoms by a laser beam reflected from a single mirror. The cooling relies on the dipole force and thus in principle applies to arbitrary refractive particles including atoms, molecules, or dielectric spheres. Friction and equilibrium temperatures are derived by an analytic perturbative approach. Finally, semiclassical Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to validate the analytic results.

The introduction of advanced welding methods as an alternative joining process to riveting in the manufacture of primary aircraft structure has the potential to realize reductions in both manufacturing costs and structural weight. Current design and analysis methods for aircraft panels have been developed and validated for riveted fabrication. For welded panels, considering the buckling collapse design philosophy of aircraft stiffened panels, strength prediction methods considering welding process effects for both local-buckling and post-buckling behaviours must be developed and validated. This article reports on the work undertaken to develop analysis methods for the crippling failure of stiffened panels fabricated using laser beam and friction stir welding. The work assesses modifications to conventional analysis methods and finite-element analysis methods for strength prediction. The analysis work is validated experimentally with welded single stiffener crippling specimens. The experimental programme has demonstrated the potential static strength of laser beam and friction stir welded sheet-stiffener joints for post-buckling panel applications. The work undertaken has demonstrated that the crippling behaviour of welded stiffened panels may be analysed considering standard-buckling behaviour. However, stiffened panel buckling analysis procedures must be altered to account for the weld joint geometry and process altered material properties. © IMechE 2006.

In a recent experimental study, the beam intensity profile of the Vulcan petawatt laser beam was measured; it was found that only 20% of the energy was contained within the full width at half maximum of 6.9 mu m and 50% within 16 mu m, suggesting a long-tailed non-Gaussian transverse beam profile. A q-Gaussian distribution function was suggested therein to reproduce this behavior. The spatial beam profile dynamics of a q-Gaussian laser beam propagating in relativistic plasma is investigated in this article. A non-paraxial theory is employed, taking into account nonlinearity via the relativistic decrease of the plasma frequency. We have studied analytically and numerically the dynamics of a relativistically guided beam and its dependence on the q-parameter. Numerical simulation results are shown to trace the dependence of the focusing length on the q-Gaussian profile.

Basing the conception of language on the sign represents also an obstacle to the awareness of certain elements of human life, especially to a full understanding of what language or art do, Henri Meschonnic’s poetics of the continuum and of rhythm criticizes the sign based on Benveniste’s terms of rhythm and discourse, developing an anthropology of language. Rhythm, for Meschonnic, is no formal metrical but a semantic principle, each time unique and unforeseeable. As for Humboldt, his starting point is not the word but the ensemble of speech; language is not ergon but energeia. The poem then is not a literary form but a process of transformation that Meschonnic defines as the invention of a form of life by a form of language and vice versa. Thus a poem is a way of thinking and rhythm is form in movement. The particular subject of art and literature is consequently not the author but a process of subjectivation – this is the contrary of the conception of the sign. By demonstrating the limits of the sign, Meschonnic’s poetics attempts to thematize the intelligibility of presence. Art and literature raise our awareness of this element of human life we cannot grasp conceptually. This poetical thinking is a necessary counterforce against all institutionalization.

Initial sizing procedures for aircraft stiffened panels that include the influence of welding fabrication residual process effects are missing. Herein, experimental and Finite Element analyses are coupled to generate knowledge to formulate an accurate and computationally efficient sizing procedure which will enable designers to routinely consider panel fabrication, via welding, accounting for the complex distortions and stresses induced by this manufacturing process. Validating experimental results demonstrate the need to consider welding induced material property degradation, residual stresses and distortions, as these can reduce static strength performance. However, results from fuselage and wing trade-studies, using the validated sizing procedure, establish that these potential reductions in strength performance may be overcome through local geometric tailoring during initial sizing, negating any weight penalty for the majority of design scenarios.

Recent progress using the VULCAN laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to pump X-ray lasing in nickel-like ions is reviewed. Double pulse pumping with similar to 100 ps pulses has been shown to produce significantly greater X-ray laser output than single pulses of duration 0.1-1 ns. With double pulse pumping, the main pumping pulse interacts with a pre-formed plasma created by a pre-pulse. The efficiency of lasing increases as there is a reduced effect of refraction of the X-ray laser beam due to smaller density gradients and larger gain volumes, which enable propagation of the X-ray laser beam along the full length of the target. The record shortest wavelength saturated laser at 5.9 nm has been achieved in Ni-like dysprosium using double pulse pumping of 75 ps duration from the VULCAN laser. A variant of the double pulse pumping using a single similar to 100 ps laser pulse and a superimposed short similar to 1 ps pulse has been found to further increase the efficiency of lasing by reducing the effects of over-ionisation during the gain period. The record shortest wavelength saturated laser pumped by a short similar to 1 ps pulse has been achieved in Ni-like samarium using the VULCAN laser operating in chirped pulse amplified (CPA) mode. Fabrication of devices based on thin film structures deposited using the pulsed laser deposition technique relies on reproducibility and control of deposition rates over substrate areas as large as possible. Here we present an application of the random phase plate technique to smooth and homogenize the intensity distribution of a KrF laser footprint on the surface of a target which is to be ablated. It is demonstrated that intensity distributions over millimeter-sized spots on the target can be made insensitive to the typical changes that occur in the near-field intensity distribution of the ultraviolet output from a KrF laser. A saturated nickel-like samarium x-ray laser beam at 7 nanometers has been demonstrated with an output energy of 0.3 millijoule in 50-picosecond pulses, demonstrating that saturated operation of a laser at wavelengths shorter than 10 nanometers can be achieved. The narrow divergence, short wavelength, short pulse duration, high efficiency, and high brightness of this samarium laser make it an ideal candidate for many x-ray laser applications.

We made numerical simulations of the generation of narrowband beams of extreme ultraviolet radiation from intense laser interaction with a blazed grating surface. Strong fifth harmonic emission into its blazed diffraction order was observed as well as heavy suppression of the fundamental frequency with comparison to a typical harmonic spectrum from a flat target. The results demonstrate a new highly efficient method of generating near-monochromatic harmonics from the fundamental with minimal effect on the pulse duration. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

The process of second harmonic generation (SHG) in undercritical plasmas is studied. It is shown that filamentation and self-focusing of the laser beam in the plasma can break the plasma density symmetry and lead to SHG by free electrons. In turn, second harmonic emission may be used to investigate the plasma parameters and to diagnose the process of laser beam filamentation itself.
