A novel strategy for the controlled synthesis of 2D MoS<inf>2</inf>/C hybrid nanosheets consisting of the alternative layer-by-layer interoverlapped single-layer MoS<inf>2</inf> and mesoporous carbon (m-C) is demonstrated. Such special hybrid nanosheets with a maximized MoS<inf>2</inf>/m-C interface contact show very good performance for lithium-ion batteries in terms of high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability.

We study state engineering through bilinear interactions between two remote qubits and two-mode Gaussian light fields. The attainable two-qubit states span the entire physically allowed region in the entanglement-versus-global-purity plane. Two-mode Gaussian states with maximal entanglement at fixed global and marginal entropies produce maximally entangled two-qubit states in the corresponding entropic diagram. We show that a small set of parameters characterizing extremally entangled two-mode Gaussian states is sufficient to control the engineering of extremally entangled two-qubit states, which can be realized in realistic matter-light scenarios.

The objectives of this study were to determine the fracture toughness of adhesive interfaces between dentine and clinically relevant, thin layers of dental luting cements. Cements tested included a conventional glass-ionomer, F (Fuji I), a resin-modified glass-ionomer, FP (Fuji Plus) and a compomer cement, D (DyractCem). Ten miniature short-bar chevron notch specimens were manufactured for each cement, each comprising a 40 µm thick chevron of lute, between two 1.5 mm thick blocks of bovine dentine, encased in resin composite. The interfacial KIC results (MN/m3/2) were median (range): F; 0.152 (0.14-0.16), FP; 0.306 (0.27-0.37), D; 0.351 (0.31-0.37). Non-parametric statistical analysis showed that the fracture toughness of F was significantly lower (p

The aim of this study was to visualize integrin expression by cells in interface tissue in relation to their ligands. Tissue samples were obtained from 25 patients undergoing revision of aseptically loose total joint replacements. Serial sections were immunolabeled for the integrins alpha (2)beta (1) alpha (v)beta (3), alpha (4)beta (1) alpha (L)beta (2) (CD11a), alpha (M)beta (2) (CD11b), and alpha (x)beta (2) (CD11c), and the ligands fibronectin, laminin, vitronectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and vascular adhesion molecule-1. Most cells were found to express alpha (2)beta (1) most macrophages and giant cells expressed CD11b, and the majority of CD11a was found on perivascular T lymphocytes. From the small amount of alpha (4)beta (1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 expression in the interface tissue and the combination of CD11a, CD11b, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression, it would seem that macrophages use beta (2) integrins to transmigrate. For elastoplastic particle reinforced metal matrix composites, failure may originate from interface debonding between the particles and the matrix, both elastoplastic and matrix fracture near the interface. To calculate the stress and strain distribution in these regions, a single reinforcing particle axisymmetric unit cell model is used in this article. The nodes at the interface of the particle and the matrix are tied. The development of interfacial decohesion is not modelled. Finite element modelling is used, to reveal the effects of particle strain hardening rate, yield stress and elastic modulus on the interfacial traction vector (or stress vector), interface deformation and the stress distribution within the unit cell, when the composite is under uniaxial tension. The results show that the stress distribution and the interface deformation are sensitive to the strain hardening rate and the yield stress of the particle. With increasing particle strain hardening rate and yield stress, the interfacial traction vector and internal stress distribution vary in larger ranges, the maximum interfacial traction vector and the maximum internal stress both increase, while the interface deformation decreases. In contrast, the particle elastic modulus has little effect on the interfacial traction vector, internal stress and interface deformation.

When simulating the High Pressure Die Casting ‘HPDC’ process, the heat transfer coefficient ‘HTC’ between the casting and the die is critical to accurately predict the quality of the casting. To determine the HTC at the metal–die interface a production die for an automotive engine bearing beam, Die 1, was instrumented with type K thermocouples. A Magmasoft® simulation model was generated with virtual thermocouple points placed in the same location as the production die. The temperature traces from the simulation model were compared to the instrumentation results. Using the default simulation HTC for the metal–die interface, a poor correlation was seen, with the temperature response being much less for the simulation model. Because of this, the HTC at the metal–die interface was modified in order to get a better fit. After many simulation iterations, a good fit was established using a peak HTC of 42,000 W/m2 K, this modified HTC was further validated by a second instrumented production die, proving that the modified HTC gives good correlation to the instrumentation trials. The updated HTC properties for the simulation model will improve the predictive capabilities of the casting simulation software and better predict casting defects.

The manner in which ultrathin films of alumina, deposited at the dielectric-electrode interface, affect the recoverable energy density associated with (BiFeO3)0.6–(SrTiO3)0.4 (BFST) thin film capacitors has been characterised. Approximately 6 nm of alumina on 400 nm of BFST increases the maximum recoverable energy of the system by around 30% from 13 Jcc1 to 17 Jcc1.
Essentially, the alumina acts in the same way as a naturally present parasitic “dead-layer,” distorting the polarisation-field response such that the ultimate polarisation associated with the BFST is pushed to higher values of electric field. The work acts as a proof-of-principle to illustrate how the design of artificial interfacial dielectric “dead-layers” can increase energy densities in simple dielectric capacitors, allowing them to compete more generally with other energy storage technologies.

In this paper we extend the derivation of the modified form Snells's law that occurs when an additional phase profile is introduced at the material interface. We show that this permits electromagnetic (EM) beam steering, negative refraction and retrodirective action opportunities for such engineered surfaces even if they are immersed in a uniform dielectric. Simple expressions for the retrodirected and negatively refracted beams are derived along with the propagation conditions that occur at the boundary interface inside the critical angle range. It is also demonstrated how the transmission and reflected power levels are affected by the additional phase taper introduced at the surface.

The effect of preparation design and the physical properties of the interface lute on the restored machined ceramic crown-tooth complex are poorly understood. The aim of this work was to determine, by means of three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA) the effect of the tooth preparation design and the elastic modulus of the cement on the stress state of the cemented machined ceramic crown-tooth complex. The three-dimensional structure of human premolar teeth, restored with adhesively cemented machined ceramic crowns, was digitized with a micro-CT scanner. An accurate, high resolution, digital replica model of a restored tooth was created. Two preparation designs, with different occlusal morphologies, were modeled with cements of 3 different elastic moduli. Interactive medical image processing software (mimics and professional CAD modeling software) was used to create sophisticated digital models that included the supporting structures; periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The generated models were imported into an FEA software program (hypermesh version 10.0, Altair Engineering Inc.) with all degrees of freedom constrained at the outer surface of the supporting cortical bone of the crown-tooth complex. Five different elastic moduli values were given to the adhesive cement interface 1.8 GPa, 4 GPa, 8 GPa, 18.3 GPa and 40 GPa; the four lower values are representative of currently used cementing lutes and 40 GPa is set as an extreme high value. The stress distribution under simulated applied loads was determined. The preparation design demonstrated an effect on the stress state of the restored tooth system. The cement elastic modulus affected the stress state in the cement and dentin structures but not in the crown, the pulp, the periodontal ligament or the cancellous and cortical bone. The results of this study suggest that both the choice of the preparation design and the cement elastic modulus can affect the stress state within the restored crown-tooth complex.
