The electrochemical promotion of a platinum catalyst for ethylene oxidation on a dual chamber membrane reactor was studied. The catalyst was supported on a La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.803 membrane. Due the supporting membrane's electronic conductivity it is possible to promote the reaction by controlling the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane. Upon establishment of an oxygen potential difference across the membrane, oxygen species can migrate and spillover onto the catalyst surface, modifying the catalytic activity. Initial experiments showed an overall promotion of approximately one order of magnitude of the reaction rate of ethylene, under an oxygen atmosphere on the sweep side of the membrane reactor, as compared with the rate under an inert sweep gas. The reaction rate can keep its promoted state even after the flow of oxygen on the sweep side was interrupted. This behavior caused further promotion with every experiment cycle. The causes of permanent promotion and on demonstrating controllable promotion of the catalytic activity are presented. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE Annual Meeting (San Francisco, CA 11/12-17/2006).

In this paper, new solutions to the problem of making measurements, of carbonation and chloride ingress, in particular, in concrete structures are considered. The approach has focused on the design, development, and use of fiber-optic sensors (FOSs), recognizing the need in that conventional devices are often either inaccurate, expensive, or unsuitable for encapsulation in the material. The sensors have been designed to monitor, in situ and nondestructively, relevant physical, and chemical changes in cementitious materials. Three different types of FOS were constructed, tested, and evaluated specifically for this application, these being a temperature sensor (based on the fluorescence decay) and pH and chloride sensors, based on sol-gel (solidified gel) technology with appropriate impregnated indicators. The sensors were all designed to be inserted into the structures and evaluated under the harshest conditions, i.e., being mounted when the mortar is poured and thus tested in situ, with the temperature and pH sensors successfully embedded in mortar. The outcomes of these tests have shown that both the temperature sensor and the pH sensor were able to function correctly for the duration of the work - for over 18 months after placement. The laboratory tests on the chloride sensor showed it was able to make measurements but was not reversible, limiting its potential utility for in situ environments. Research is ongoing to refine the sensor performance and extend the testing.

Silver colloids have been prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution and embeded in alumina following a sol-gel procedure in the presence of Pluronic 84 ((EO)(19)(PO)(39)(EO)(19)), as surfactant. Plasma-catalytic experiments aimed at the mineralization of toluene showed that the selectivity to CO2 was significantly increased in the presence of Ag catalysts compared with results obtained using the plasma alone. In-situ studies of the ozone interaction with catalysts provide an insight into the nature of the active sites of supported silver colloids for mineralization reactions. It is noticeable that when ozone is chemisorbed on embedded Ag colloidal catalysts no change in the silver oxidation state or size is found. The population of the chemisorbed species is higher at lower temperatures, where the non-selective decomposition of ozone is smaller. The catalysts exhibit high stability, preserving the structural and textural properties after the catalytic tests, that is indeed very important in the presence of ozone. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The radiation efficiency and resonance frequency of five compact antennas worn by nine individual test subjects was measured at 2.45 GHz in a reverberation chamber. The results show that, despite significant differences in body mass, wearable antenna radiation efficiency had a standard deviation less than 0.6 dB and the resonance frequency shift was less than 1% between test subjects. Variability in the radiation efficiency and resonance frequency shift between antennas was largely dependant on body tissue coupling which is related to both antenna geometry and radiation characteristics. The reverberation chamber measurements were validated using a synthetic tissue phantom and compared with results obtained in a spherical near field chamber and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation.

A method for the hydrothermal synthesis of a single layer of zeolite Beta crystals on a molybdenum substrate for microreactor applications has been developed. Before the hydrothermal synthesis, the surface of the substrate was modified by an etching procedure that increases the roughness at the nanoscale level without completely eliminating the surface lay structure. Then, thin films of Al2O3 (170 nm) and TiO2 (50 nm) were successively deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on the substrate. The internal Al2O3 film protects the Mo substrate from oxidation up to 550 degrees C in an oxidative environment. The high wettability of the external TiO2 film after UV irradiation increases zeolite nucleation on its surface. The role of the metal precursor (TiCl4 vs TiI4), deposition temperature (300 vs 500 degrees C), and film thickness (50 vs 100 nm) was investigated to obtain titania films with the slowest decay in the superhydrophilic behavior after UV irradiation. Zeolite Beta coatings with a Si/Al ratio of 23 were grown at 140 degrees C for 48 It. After ion exchange with a 10(-4) M cobalt acetate solution, the activity of the coatings was determined in the ammoxidation of ethylene to acetonitrile in a microstructured reactor. A maximum reaction rate of 220 mu mol C2H3N g(-1) s(-1) was obtained at 500 degrees C, with 42% carbon selectivity to acetonitrile. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
