The biosorption process of anionic dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) and cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as a function of solution pH, initial concentration and contact time onto olive stone (OS) biomass has been investigated. The main objectives of the current study are to: (i) study the chemistry and the mechanism of ARS and MB biosorption onto olive stone and the type of OS–ARS, MB interactions occurring, (ii) study the biosorption equilibrium and kinetic experimental data required for the design and operation of column reactors. Equilibrium biosorption isotherms and kinetics were also examined. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to four different isotherms by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption experimental data for ARS and MB dyes were well interpreted by the Temkin and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for ARS and MB dyes were 109.0 and 102.6 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data of the two dyes could be better described by the pseudo second-order model. The data showed that olive stone can be effectively used for removing dyes from wastewater.

The biosorption process of anionic dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) and cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as a function of contact time, initial concentration and solution pH onto olive stone (OS) biomass has been investigated. Equilibrium biosorption isotherms in single and binary systems and kinetics in batch mode were also examined. The kinetic data of the two dyes were better described by the pseudo second-order model. At low concentration, ARS dye appeared to follow a two-step diffusion process, while MB dye followed a three-step diffusion process. The biosorption experimental data for ARS and MB dyes were well suited to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm. The maximum biosorption of ARS dye, qmax = 16.10 mg/g, was obtained at pH 3.28 and the maximum biosorption of MB dye, qmax = 13.20 mg/g, was observed at basic pH values. In the binary system, it was indicated that the MB dye diffuses firstly inside the biosorbent particle and occupies the biosorption sites forming a monodentate complex and then the ARS dye enters and can only bind to untaken sites; forms a tridentate complex with OS active sites.

The use of TiO 2 photocatalysis for the destruction of dyes such as methylene blue has been extensively reported. One of the challenges faced in both the laboratory and large scale water treatment plants is the fact that the samples have to be removed from the reactor vessel and the catalyst separated prior to analysis being undertaken. In this paper we report the development of a simple fluorimeter instrument and its use in monitoring the photocatalytic destruction of methylene blue dyes in the presence of catalyst suspensions. The results reported show that the instrument provides an effective method for in situ monitoring of the photocatalytic destruction of fluorescent dyes hence allowing more accurate measurement due to the minimisation of sample loss and cross contamination. Furthermore it also provides a method for real time monitoring of the dye pollutant destruction in large scale photocatalytic reactors.

A detailed study of the action of alkali on methylene blue (Cl. Basic Blue 9) and other thiazine dyes was carried out through a combination of UV/visible spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, mass and NMR spectrometry and computational methods. In 0.1 M aq alkali solution, methylene blue forms a highly coloured, lipophilic species that is mainly Bernthsen's methylene violet i.e. a hydrolysis decomposition product, this being contrary to the report of a red N-hydroxy methylene blue adduct. The nature of the heterocyclic nitrogen atom in C.I. Basic Blue 9 is discussed and it is concluded there is no basis for the proposal of nucleophile addition at this site of the dye. In contrast, other thiazine dyes are deprotonated by alkali to form their neutral, highly coloured, lipophilic conjugate base forms. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, olive stone (OS) was utilized to investigate its capacity as biosorbent for methylene blue (MB) and Cr(III), which are usually present in textile industry effluents. Equilibrium and kinetic experiments were performed in batch experiments. The biosorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The equilibrium data were fitted with several models, but Langmuir and Sips models best reproduced the experimental results. Maximum biosorption capacities were 3.296 mg/g (0.0116 mmol/g) and 4.990 mg/g (0.0960 mmol/g) for MB and Cr(III), respectively. Several operation variables, such as
biosorbent mass, flow rate, and initial concentration on the removal of dye and metal, were evaluated in column system. The removal efficiency improved as OS mass increased and decreased when flow rate and initial concentration increased. Also, MB uptake was substantially decreased by increasing the initial concentration of Cr(III), ranging from 6.09 to 2.75 mg/g. These results show that the presence of Cr(III) significantly modifies the biosorption capacity of MB by the OS. These results suggest that OS is a potential low-cost food industry waste for textile industry wastewater treatment.

Performance data for a dye based, regenerable oxygen sensor (Mills and Lawrie [1], Mills et al. [2]) are analyzed to develop useful kinetic models for sensor photoactivation (dye reduction) and dark, oxygen detection (dye oxidation). The titania loaded, thin film sensor exhibits an apparent first order photoactivation of the dye, which we demonstrate (Section 3.2 and Fig. 4) is due to a kinetic disguise of a zero order photoreaction occurring through a non-uniformly illuminated sensor film. The observed zero order, slow recovery due to dye oxidation by dioxygen (O2 detection) appears best rationalized by a model assuming a near O2-impermeable skin developing on the sensor surface as solvent is evaporatively removed following sensor film casting and curing.

The initial rate of the photocatalysed oxidation of methylene blue, MB, by dissolved oxygen in solution, ri(MB), is measured for a series of titania on glass samples exhibiting a wide range of activities.  The samples used include two different types of commercial self-cleaning glass and a lab-made sol-geltitania film.  The activities of these samples are also assessed using a resazurin-based photocatalyst activity indicator ink, i.e. Rz paii, for which the initial rates of the photocatalysed reduction of Rz were measured, ri(Rz).  A plot of ri(MB)vs. ri(Rz) reveals a goodstraight line, thereby demonstrating a linear correlation (for TiO2films on glass at least) between the slow (usually hours) photocatalysed oxidation of organic materials, such as MB, and the fast (typically minutes) photocatalysed irreversible reduction of a dye, like Rz, in a paii.  The possible use of paii technology for assessing, in a simple, quick and inexpensive manner, photocatalytic films both in the laboratory and in situ is discussed briefly.

This work investigates the production of activated lignin-chitosan extruded (ALiCE) pellets with controlled particle size distribution (almost spherical: dp ~500‒1000µm) for efficient methylene blue adsorption. The novel preparation method employed in this study successfully produced activated lignin-chitosan pellets. Structural and morphological characterizations were performed using BET, FTIR and SEM-EDX analyses. The influence of contact time, solution pH, ionic strength, initial adsorbate concentration and desorption studies was investigated. The experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.997), yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 36.25mg/g. The kinetic data indicated that methylene blue (MB) adsorption onto ALiCE can be represented by the pseudo second-order-model with intraparticle processes initially controlling the process of MB adsorption. Overall, these results indicate that the novel ALiCE offers great potential for removing cationic organic pollutants from rivers and streams.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate complexes were evaluated as a potentially novel drug delivery platform suitable for in vivo use in photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) of wound infections. An optimised formulation (8.0%w/w PVA, 2.0% w/w borax) was loaded with 1.0 mg ml(-1) of the photosensitisers Methylene Blue (MB) and meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate (TMP). Both drugs were released to yield receiver compartment concentrations (>5.0 mu g ml(-1)) found to be phototoxic to both planktonic and bicifilm-grown methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a common cause of wound infections in hospitals. Newborn calf serum, used to simulate the conditions prevalent in an exuding wound, did not adversely affect the properties of the hydrogels and had no significant effect on the rate of TMP-mediated photodynamic kill of MRSA, despite appreciably reducing the fluence rate of incident light. However, MB-mediated photodynamic kill of MRSA was significantly reduced in the presence of calf serum and when the clinical isolate was grown in a biofilm. Results support the contention that delivery of MB or TMP using gel-type vehicles as part of PACT could make a contribution to the photodynamic eradication of MRSA from infected wounds. The kinetics of a fast leuco-Methylene Blue (LMB) re-oxidation to Methylene Blue (MB) by copper(II)-halide (Cl-, Br-) complexes in acidic aqueous media has been studied spectrophotometrically using a stopped-flow technique. The reaction follows a simple first order rate expression under an excess of the copper(II) species (and H+(aq)), and the pseudo-first order rate constant (k'(obs)) is largely independent of the atmosphere used (air, oxygen, argon). The rate law, at constant Cl- (Br-) anion concentration, is given by the expression: (d[MB+])/dt = ((k(a)K[H+] + k(b))/(1 + K[H+])).[Cu-II][LMB] = k'(obs)[LMB], where K is the protonation constant, and k(a) and k(b) are the pseudo-second order rate constants for protonated and deprotonated forms of LMB, respectively The rate law was determined based on the observed k'(obs) vs. [Cu-II] and [H+] dependences. The rate dramatically increases with [Cl-] over the range: 0.1-1.5 M, reflecting the following reactivity order: Cu2+(aq)
