We report results on the performance of a free-electron laser operating at a wavelength of 13.7 nm where unprecedented peak and average powers for a coherent extreme-ultraviolet radiation source have been measured. In the saturation regime, the peak energy approached 170 J for individual pulses, and the average energy per pulse reached 70 J. The pulse duration was in the region of 10 fs, and peak powers of 10 GW were achieved. At a pulse repetition frequency of 700 pulses per second, the average extreme-ultraviolet power reached 20 mW. The output beam also contained a significant contribution from odd harmonics of approximately 0.6% and 0.03% for the 3rd (4.6 nm) and the 5th (2.75 nm) harmonics, respectively. At 2.75 nm the 5th harmonic of the radiation reaches deep into the water window, a wavelength range that is crucially important for the investigation of biological samples.

This paper introduces a fast algorithm for moving window principal component analysis (MWPCA) which will adapt a principal component model. This incorporates the concept of recursive adaptation within a moving window to (i) adapt the mean and variance of the process variables, (ii) adapt the correlation matrix, and (iii) adjust the PCA model by recomputing the decomposition. This paper shows that the new algorithm is computationally faster than conventional moving window techniques, if the window size exceeds 3 times the number of variables, and is not affected by the window size. A further contribution is the introduction of an N-step-ahead horizon into the process monitoring. This implies that the PCA model, identified N-steps earlier, is used to analyze the current observation. For monitoring complex chemical systems, this work shows that the use of the horizon improves the ability to detect slowly developing drifts.
Effect of Water on the Electrochemical Window and Potential Limits of Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids
Resumo:
The effect of water content on room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) was studied by Karl Fischer titration and cyclic voltammetry in the following ionic liquids: tris(P-hexyl)tetradecylphosphonium trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)phosphate [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][NTf2], N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [C(6)mim][FAP], 1-butyl3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)dmim][NTf2], N-hexyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsolfonyl)imide [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylirnidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C(4)mim][PF6], F6], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(2)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C(4)mim][BF4], 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide [C(4)mim][I], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate [C(4)mim][OTf], and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [C(6)mim][Cl]. In addition, electrochemically relevant properties such as viscosity, conductivity, density, and melting point of RTILs are summarized from previous literature and are discussed. Karl Fisher titrations were carried out to determine the water content of RTILs for vacuum-dried, atmospheric, and wet samples. The anion in particular was found to affect the level of water uptake. The hydrophobicity of the anions adhered to the following trend: [FAP](-) > [NTf2](-) > [PF6](-) > [BF4](-) > halides. Cyclic voltammetry shows that an increase in water content significantly narrows the electrochemical window of each ionic liquid. The electrochemical window decreases in the following order: vacuum-dried > atmospheric > wet at 298 K > 318 K > 338 K. The anodic and cathodic potentials vs ferrocene internal reference are also listed under vacuum-dried and atmospheric conditions. The data obtained may aid the selection of a RTIL for use as a solvent in electrochemical applications.

A new type of near-infrared emitting rare-earth complex has been synthesised, consisting of three bis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)imide ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline molecule. The chelate rings formed by the rare-earth ion and the bidentate ligands do not contain any carbon atoms and can hence be considered as 'inorganic' chelate rings. The absence of C-H stretching vibration modes in the first coordination sphere of the rare-earth ion and the presence of a light-harvesting moiety (1,10-phenanthroline) bound to the rare-earth ion result in a complex that can be efficiently excited and exhibits intense near-infrared luminescence. This paper discusses the monitoring of complex nonlinear and time-varying processes. Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) has gained significant attention as a monitoring tool for nonlinear systems in recent years but relies on a fixed model that cannot be employed for time-varying systems. The contribution of this article is the development of a numerically efficient and memory saving moving window KPCA (MWKPCA) monitoring approach. The proposed technique incorporates an up- and downdating procedure to adapt (i) the data mean and covariance matrix in the feature space and (ii) approximates the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Gram matrix. The article shows that the proposed MWKPCA algorithm has a computation complexity of O(N2), whilst batch techniques, e.g. the Lanczos method, are of O(N3). Including the adaptation of the number of retained components and an l-step ahead application of the MWKPCA monitoring model, the paper finally demonstrates the utility of the proposed technique using a simulated nonlinear time-varying system and recorded data from an industrial distillation column.
