An iron prophyrin complex has been immobilized on the surfaces of platinum, silver, and indium doped-tin oxide coated glass by using the poly(gamma-ethyl L-glutamate)-N-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole derivative 1 as a linking agent, thus allowing-the surface-enhanced resonance Raman and UV-VIS absorption spectra and electrochemical properties of the porphyrin to be studied in solvents in which it is not normally soluble.

Ceria (CeO2) is a technologically important rare earth material because of its unique properties and various engineering and biological applications. A facile and rapid method has been developed to prepare ceria nanoparticles using microwave with the average size 7 nm in the presence of a set of ionic liquids based on the bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion and different cations of 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium. The structural features and optical properties of the nanoparticles were determined in depth with X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, N-2 adsorption-desorption technique, dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The energy band gap measurements of nanoparticles of ceria have been carried out by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The surface charge properties of colloidal ceria dispersions in ethylene glycol have been also studied. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on using this type of ionic liquids in ceria nanoparticle synthesis. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A facile sonochemical method has been developed to prepare very small zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnS NPs) of extremely small size about 1. nm in diameter using a set of ionic liquids based on the bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion and different cations of 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium. The structural features and optical properties of the NPs were determined in depth with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The energy band gap measurements of ZnS NPs were calculated by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. One of the interesting features of the present work is that the wide band gap semiconductor ZnS nanocrystals were prepared which are used in the fabrication of photonic devices.

The concentration of organic acids in anaerobic digesters is one of the most critical parameters for monitoring and advanced control of anaerobic digestion processes. Thus, a reliable online-measurement system is absolutely necessary. A novel approach to obtaining these measurements indirectly and online using UV/vis spectroscopic probes, in conjunction with powerful pattern recognition methods, is presented in this paper. An UV/vis spectroscopic probe from S::CAN is used in combination with a custom-built dilution system to monitor the absorption of fully fermented sludge at a spectrum from 200 to 750 nm. Advanced pattern recognition methods are then used to map the non-linear relationship between measured absorption spectra to laboratory measurements of organic acid concentrations. Linear discriminant analysis, generalized discriminant analysis (GerDA), support vector machines (SVM), relevance vector machines, random forest and neural networks are investigated for this purpose and their performance compared. To validate the approach, online measurements have been taken at a full-scale 1.3-MW industrial biogas plant. Results show that whereas some of the methods considered do not yield satisfactory results, accurate prediction of organic acid concentration ranges can be obtained with both GerDA and SVM-based classifiers, with classification rates in excess of 87% achieved on test data.

A convenient microwave method in preparation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) using an ionic liquid, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide, [P-66614][NTf2], as a green solvent is described in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report for synthesizing any nanoparticle using this ionic liquid. Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide has low interface tension and thus it can enhance the nucleation rate, which is favorable to the formation of smaller ZnONPs. The fabricated ZnONPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The XRD pattern reveals that the ZnONPs have hexagonal wurtzite structure. The strong intensity and narrow width of ZnO diffraction peaks indicate that the resulting nanoparticles are of high crystallinity. The synthesized ZnONPs show direct band gap of 3.43 eV. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of ZnONPs dispersed in ethylene glycol at room temperature revealed a blue-shifted onset of absorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The novel ligand 4'-diferrocenylallcyne-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine (7; Fc-C C-Fc-tpy; tpy = terpyridyl; Fc = ferrocenyl) and its Ru2+ complexes 8-10 have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis and luminescence spectroscopy. Electrochemical data and UV absorption and emission spectra indicate that the insertion of an ethynyl group causes delocalization of electrons in the extended pi* orbitals. Cyclic voltammetric measurements of 7 show two successive reversible one-electron-oxidation processes with half-wave potentials of 0.53 and 0.78 V. The small variations of the E-1/2 values for the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couples after the coordination of the Ru2+ ion suggest a weak interaction between the Ru2+ and Fe2+ centers. After insertion of an ethynyl group, UV-vis absorption spectra show a red shift of the absorption peak of the (1)[(d(pi)(Fe))(6)]->(1)[(d(pi)(Fe))(5)(pi*(Ru)(tpy))(1)] MMLCT of the Ru2+ complexes. The Ru2+ complex 8 exhibits the strongest luminescence intensity (lambda(em)(max) 712 nm, Phi(em) = 2.63 x 10(-4), tau = 323 ns) relative to analogous ferrocene-based terpyridine Ru(II) complexes in H2O/CH3CN (4/1 v/v) solution.

Indicator inks, previously shown to be capable of rapidly assessing photocatalytic activity via a novel photo-reductive mechanism, were simply applied via an aerosol spray onto commercially available pieces of Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass. Ink layers could be applied with high evenness of spread, with as little deviation as 5% upon UV-visible spectroscopic assessment of 25 equally distributed positions over a 10 cm x 10 cm glass cut. The inks were comprised of either a resazurin (Rz) or dichloroindophenol (DCIP) redox dye with a glycerol sacrificial electron donor in an aqueous hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) polymer media. The photo-reduction reaction under UVA light of a single spot was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy and digital images attained from a flat-bed scanner in tandem for both inks. The photo-reduction of Rz ink underwent a two-step kinetic process, whereby the blue redox dye was initially reduced to a pink intermediate resorufin (Rf) and subsequently reduced to a bleached form of the dye. In contrast, a simple one-step kinetic process was observed for the reduction of the light blue redox dye DCIP to its bleached intermediates. Changes in red-green-blue colour extracted from digital images of the inks were inversely proportional to the changes seen at corresponding wavelengths via UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and wholly indicative of the reaction kinetics. The photocatalytic activity areas of cuts of Activ (TM) glass, 10 cm x 10 cm in size, were assessed using both Rz and DCIP indicator inks evenly sprayed over the films: firstly using UVA lamp light to activate the underlying Activ (TM) film (1.75 mW cm(-2)) and secondly under solar conditions (2.06 +/- 0.14 mW cm(-2)). The photo-reduction reactions were monitored solely by flat-bed digital scanning. Red-green-blue values of a generated 14 x 14 grid (196 positions) that covered the entire area of each film image were extracted using a Custom-built program entitled RGB Extractor(C). A homogenous degradation over the 196 positions analysed for both Rz (Red colour deviation = 19% UVA, 8% Solar: Green colour deviation = 17% UVA, 12% Solar) and DCIP (Red colour deviation = 22% UVA, 16% Solar) inks was seen in both UVA and solar experiments, demonstrating the consistency of the self-cleaning titania layer on Activ (TM). The method presented provides a good solution for the high-throughput photocatalytic screening of a number of homogenous photocatalytically active materials simultaneously or numerous positions on a single film; both useful in assessing the homogeneity of a film or determining the best combination of reaction components to produce the optimum performance photocatalytic film. The technique of point-projection spectroscopy has been shown to be applicable to the study of expanding aluminum plasmas generated by approximately 80 ps laser pulses incident on massive, aluminum stripe targets of approximately 125-mu-m width. Targets were irradiated at an intensity of 2.5 +/- 0.5 x 10(13) W/cm2 in a line focus geometry and under conditions similar to those of interest in x-ray laser schemes. Hydrogenic and heliumlike aluminum resonance lines were observed in absorption using a quasicontinuous uranium back-lighter plasma. Using a pentaerythrital Bragg crystal as the dispersive element, a resolving power of approximately 3500 was achieved with spatial resolution at the 5-mu-m level in frame times of the order of 100 ps. Reduction of the data for times up to 150 ps after the peak of the incident laser pulse produced estimates of the temperature and ion densities present, as a function of space and time. The one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrodynamic code MEDUSA coupled to the atomic physics non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium ionized material package was used to simulate the experiment in planar geometry and has been shown to be consistent with the measurements.
