An impedance surface is presented that reduces the dispersion experienced upon propagation of broadband pulses within rectangular waveguides. The surface impedance is selected so that, within a frequency range, the transverse resonance condition is satisfied for longitudinal wavenumber that varies linearly with frequency. A synthesis procedure for practical surface topologies consisting of periodic dipole arrays is described. An example involving a finite structure is employed to illustrate the reduced dispersion. Numerical simulation results obtained from in-house mode-matching method as well as HFSS are presented. A prototype is fabricated and tested experimentally validating the theoretical predictions.

A nonlinear equation of motion is found for the dimer comprising two charged H2O molecules. The THz dielectric response to nonharmonic vibration of a nonrigid dipole, forming the hydrogen bond (HB), is found in the direction transverse to this bond. An explicit expression is derived for the autocorrelator that governs the spectrum generated by transverse vibration (TV) of such a dipole. This expression is obtained by analytical solution of the truncated set of recurrence equations. The far infrared (FIR) spectra of ice at the temperature - 7 degrees C are calculated. The wideband, in the wavenumber (frequency) v range 0... 100.0 cm(-1), spectra are obtained for liquid water at room temperature and for supercooled water at -5.6 degrees C. All spectra are represented in terms of the complex permittivity epsilon(v) and the absorption coefficient alpha(v). The obtained analytical formula for epsilon comprises the term epsilon(perpendicular to) pertinent to the studied TV mechanism with three additional terms Delta epsilon(q), Delta epsilon(mu), and epsilon(or) arising, respectively, from: elastic harmonic vibration of charged molecules along the H-bond; elastic reorientation of HB permanent dipoles; and rather free libration of permanent dipoles in 'defects' of water/ice structure. The suggested TV-dielectric relaxation mechanism allows us: (a) to remove the THz 'deficit' of loss epsilon" inherent in previous theoretical studies; (b) to explain the THz loss and absorption spectra in supercooled (SC) water; and (c) to describe, in agreement with the experiment, the low- and high-frequency tails of the two bands of ice H2O located in the range 10...300 cm(-1). Specific THz dielectric properties of SC water are ascribed to association of water molecules, revealed in our study by transverse vibration of HB charged molecules. A series of thin films comprising gold nanorods embedded in an alumina matrix have been fabricated with lengths ranging from 75 to 330 nm. Their optical properties, expressed in terms of extinction - In(T), where T is optical transmittance, have been measured as a function of wavelength, rod length, angle of incidence, and incident polarization state. The results are compared to a Maxwell-Garnett based theory modified to take into account the strongly anisotropic nature of the medium. Transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonances are observed. The interaction between the nanorods leads to the splitting of the longitudinal resonance with the longer-wavelength resonance being forbidden for direct optical observations. The shorter-wavelength resonance related to the symmetric coupling between longitudinal plasma excitations in the nanorods depends on rod length, polarization state, and angle of incidence of the probing light. The impact of electron confinement on the optical properties of the gold rods is also seen and may be incorporated into the Maxwell-Garnett theory by restricting the mean free path of the conduction electrons to produce excellent agreement between observations and the complete theory. Annealing experiments that modify the physical structure of the gold confirm this conclusion.

A realistic model of the dipole radiation forces in transverse Doppler cooling (with a s+-s- laser configuration) of an atomic beam of group 13 elements is studied within the quantum-kinetic equation framework. The full energy level sub-structure for such an atom with I = 0 (such as 66Ga) is analysed. Two cooling strategies are investigated; the first involving the 2P3/2 ? 2D5/2 transition and the second a dual laser cooling experiment involving transitions 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 ? 2S1/2. The latter scheme creates a velocity-independent dark-state resonance that inhibits a steady-state dipole cooling force. However, time-dependent calculations show that transient cooling forces are present that could be exploited for laser cooling purposes in pulsed laser fields.

Two series of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes [Ru(bipy)2(phpytr)]+ and [Ru(bipy)2(phpztr)]+ (where Hphpytr = 2-(5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine and Hphpztr = 2-(5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyrazine) are examined by electrochemistry, UV/Vis, emission, resonance Raman, transient resonance Raman and transient absorption spectroscopy, in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of their excited state electronic properties. The interpretation of the results obtained is facilitated by the availability of several isotopologues of each of the complexes examined. For the pyridine-1,2,4-triazolato based complex the lowest emissive excited state is exclusively bipy based, however, for the pyrazine based complexes excited state localisation on particular ligands shows considerable solvent and pH dependency.

The detection of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins in contaminated shellfish is essential for human health preservation. Ethical and technical reasons have prompted the search for new detection procedures as an alternative to the mouse bioassay. On the basis of the detection of molecular interactions by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors, an inhibition assay was developed using an anti-GTX2/3 antibody (GT13-A) and a saxitoxin-CM5 chip. This assay allowed for quantification of saxitoxin (STX), decarbamoyl saxitoxin (dcSTX), gonyautoxin 2,3 (GTX2/3), decarbamoyl gonyautoxin 2,3 (dcGTX2/3), gonyautoxin 5 (GTX5), and C 1,2 (C1/2) at concentrations from 2 to 50 ng/mL. The interference of five shellfish matrixes with the inhibition assay was analyzed. Mussels, clams, cockles, scallops, and oysters were extracted with five published methods. Ethanol extracts and acetic acid/heat extracts (AOAC Lawrence method) performed adequately in terms of surface regeneration and baseline interference, did not inhibit antibody binding to the chip surface significantly, and presented STX calibration curves similar to buffer controls in all matrixes tested. Hydrochloric acid/heat extracts (AOAC mouse bioassay method) presented surface regeneration problems, and although ethanol-acetic acid/dichloromethane extracts performed well, they were considered too laborious for routine sample testing. Overall the best results were obtained with the ethanol extraction method with calibration curves prepared in blank matrix extracts. STX recovery rate with the ethanol extraction method was 60.52 ± 3.72%, with variations among species. The performance of this biosensor assay in natural samples, compared to two AOAC methods for PSP toxin quantification (mouse bioassay and HPLC), suggests that this technology can be useful as a PSP screening assay. In summary, the GT13-A-STX chip inhibition assay is capable of PSP toxin detection in ethanol shellfish extracts, with sufficient sensitivity to quantify the toxin in the range of the European regulatory limit of 80 g/100 g of shellfish meat.
