A new type of near-infrared emitting rare-earth complex has been synthesised, consisting of three bis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)imide ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline molecule. The chelate rings formed by the rare-earth ion and the bidentate ligands do not contain any carbon atoms and can hence be considered as 'inorganic' chelate rings. The absence of C-H stretching vibration modes in the first coordination sphere of the rare-earth ion and the presence of a light-harvesting moiety (1,10-phenanthroline) bound to the rare-earth ion result in a complex that can be efficiently excited and exhibits intense near-infrared luminescence. The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in subwavelength dielectric ridges deposited on a thin gold film has been characterized and optimized at telecommunication wavelengths. The experimental data on the electromagnetic mode structure obtained using scanning near-field optical microscopy have been directly compared to full vectorial three-dimensional finite element method simulations. Two excitation geometries have been investigated where SPPs are excited outside or inside the dielectric tapered region adjoint to the waveguide. The dependence of the efficiency of the SPP guided mode excitation on the taper opening angle has been measured and modeled. Single-mode guiding and strong lateral mode confinement of dielectric-loaded SPP waveguide modes have been characterized with the near-field measurements and compared to the effective-index method model.

A new quadrifilar antenna has been developed for generating circularly polarized backfire radiation. The antenna consists of two orthogonal rectangular conducting loops, each incorporating capacitive coupling and fed using either a single or two coaxial cables. Though the geometry is much simpler than a conventional quadrifilar helix antenna, the radiation pattern performance is very similar. Measured and simulated patterns are compared for two antennas with different feed arrangements. It is shown that the resonant structure can produce a cardioid pattern with a directivity of 4.5 dB (120 3-dB beamwidth) and a front-to-back ratio of more than 20 dB at the center operating frequency. A 10% impedance bandwidth (VSWR

Ground vehicle tests have been performed to evaluate the performance of a Passive Millimeter Wave (PMMW) imager in reduced visibility conditions and in particular, the ability to detect power lines and cables. A PMMW imager was
compared with Long Wave Infrared (LWIR) and visible imaging cameras. The three sensors were mounted on a Land Rover, together with GPS and digital recording system. All three sensors plus the GPS data were recorded simultaneously in order to provide direct comparisons. The vehicle collected imagery from a number of sites in the vicinity of Malvern, UK, in January, 2008. Imagery was collected both while the vehicle was stationary at specific sites
and while it was moving. Weather conditions during the data collection included clear, drizzle, rain and fog. Imagery was collected during the day, at night, and during dusk/dawn transition periods. The PMMW imager was a prototype which operated at 94 GHz and was based on a conically scanned folded Schmidt camera and the LWIR and visible sensors were commercial off the shelf items.

Advances in silicon technology have been a key development in the realisation of many telecommunication and signal processing systems. In many cases, the development of application-specific digital signal processing (DSP) chips is the most cost-effective solution and provides the highest performance. Advances made in computer-aided design (CAD) tools and design methodologies now allow designers to develop complex chips within months or even weeks. This paper gives an insight into the challenges and design methodologies of implementing advanced highperformance chips for DSP. In particular, the paper reviews some of the techniques used to develop circuit architectures from high-level descriptions and the tools which are then used to realise silicon layout.
