The authors describe how a standard Rotman lens design can be readily adapted in order to allow reconfigurable beam
forming. This is achieved by applying concurrent excitations to the modified Rotman lens. A rationale for the design and
underlying behaviour of the modified, phase-aligned, Rotman lens as well as the deficiencies of a conventional Rotman lens
in this mode of operation are provided. Simulated and measured results are provided in order to illustrate the feasibility of the
approach suggested.

In a recent experimental study, the beam intensity profile of the Vulcan petawatt laser beam was measured; it was found that only 20% of the energy was contained within the full width at half maximum of 6.9 mu m and 50% within 16 mu m, suggesting a long-tailed non-Gaussian transverse beam profile. A q-Gaussian distribution function was suggested therein to reproduce this behavior. The spatial beam profile dynamics of a q-Gaussian laser beam propagating in relativistic plasma is investigated in this article. A non-paraxial theory is employed, taking into account nonlinearity via the relativistic decrease of the plasma frequency. We have studied analytically and numerically the dynamics of a relativistically guided beam and its dependence on the q-parameter. Numerical simulation results are shown to trace the dependence of the focusing length on the q-Gaussian profile.

A means for scrambling the digital modulation content in the sidelobes of a radio transmission from a steerable antenna array is presented. The method uses a Fourier transform beam-forming network simultaneously excited by an RF information stream and orthogonally injected interference streams. The proposed system is implemented using a Fourier Rotman lens and its operational characteristics are validated for a 10 GHz QPSK transmission.

We present a novel approach to network security against passive eavesdroppers by employing a configurable beam-forming technique to create tightly defined regions of coverage for targeted users. In contrast to conventional encryption methods, our security scheme is developed at the physical layer by configuring antenna array beam patterns to transmit the data to specific regions. It is shown that this technique can effectively reduce vulnerability of the physical regions to eavesdropping by adapting the antenna configuration according to the intended user's channel state information. In this paper we present the application of our concept to 802.11n networks where an antenna array is employed at the access point, and consider the issue of minimizing the coverage area of the region surrounding the targeted user. A metric termed the exposure region is formally defined and used to evaluate the level of security offered by this technique. A range of antenna array configurations are examined through analysis and simulation, and these are subsequently used to obtain the optimum array configuration for a user traversing a coverage area.

As a comparative newly-invented PKM with over-constraints in kinematic chains, the Exechon has attracted extensive attention from the research society. Different from the well-recognized kinematics analysis, the research on the stiffness characteristics of the Exechon still remains as a challenge due to the structural complexity. In order to achieve a thorough understanding of the stiffness characteristics of the Exechon PKM, this paper proposed an analytical kinetostatic model by using the substructure synthesis technique. The whole PKM system is decomposed into a moving platform subsystem, three limb subsystems and a fixed base subsystem, which are connected to each other sequentially through corresponding joints. Each limb body is modeled as a spatial beam with a uniform cross-section constrained by two sets of lumped springs. The equilibrium equation of each individual limb assemblage is derived through finite element formulation and combined with that of the moving platform derived with Newtonian method to construct the governing kinetostatic equations of the system after introducing the deformation compatibility conditions between the moving platform and the limbs. By extracting the 6 x 6 block matrix from the inversion of the governing compliance matrix, the stiffness of the moving platform is formulated. The computation for the stiffness of the Exechon PKM at a typical configuration as well as throughout the workspace is carried out in a quick manner with a piece-by-piece partition algorithm. The numerical simulations reveal a strong position-dependency of the PKM's stiffness in that it is symmetric relative to a work plane due to structural features. At the last stage, the effects of some design variables such as structural, dimensional and stiffness parameters on system rigidity are investigated with the purpose of providing useful information for the structural optimization and performance enhancement of the Exechon PKM. It is worthy mentioning that the proposed methodology of stiffness modeling in this paper can also be applied to other overconstrained PKMs and can evaluate the global rigidity over workplace efficiently with minor revisions.

As a newly invented parallel kinematic machine (PKM), Exechon has attracted intensive attention from both academic and industrial fields due to its conceptual high performance. Nevertheless, the dynamic behaviors of Exechon PKM have not been thoroughly investigated because of its structural and kinematic complexities. To identify the dynamic characteristics of Exechon PKM, an elastodynamic model is proposed with the substructure synthesis technique in this paper. The Exechon PKM is divided into a moving platform subsystem, a fixed base subsystem and three limb subsystems according to its structural features. Differential equations of motion for the limb subsystem are derived through finite element (FE) formulations by modeling the complex limb structure as a spatial beam with corresponding geometric cross sections. Meanwhile, revolute, universal, and spherical joints are simplified into virtual lumped springs associated with equivalent stiffnesses and mass at their geometric centers. Differential equations of motion for the moving platform are derived with Newton's second law after treating the platform as a rigid body due to its comparatively high rigidity. After introducing the deformation compatibility conditions between the platform and the limbs, governing differential equations of motion for Exechon PKM are derived. The solution to characteristic equations leads to natural frequencies and corresponding modal shapes of the PKM at any typical configuration. In order to predict the dynamic behaviors in a quick manner, an algorithm is proposed to numerically compute the distributions of natural frequencies throughout the workspace. Simulation results reveal that the lower natural frequencies are strongly position-dependent and distributed axial-symmetrically due to the structure symmetry of the limbs. At the last stage, a parametric analysis is carried out to identify the effects of structural, dimensional, and stiffness parameters on the system's dynamic characteristics with the purpose of providing useful information for optimal design and performance improvement of the Exechon PKM. The elastodynamic modeling methodology and dynamic analysis procedure can be well extended to other overconstrained PKMs with minor modifications.
A new algorithm for spectral and spatial reconstruction of proton beams from dosimetric measurements
Resumo:
We report on a new algorithm developed for the dosimetric analysis of broad-spectrum, multi-MeV laser-accelerated proton beams. The algorithm allows the reconstruction of the proton beam spectrum from radiochromic film data. This processing technique makes dosimetry measurements a viable alternative to the use of track detectors for spatially and spectrally resolved proton beam analysis. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The design is described of a double layer frequency selective surface which can produce a differential phase shift of 180 ° as the wave propagates through it at normal incidence. The hand of an applied circularly polarized signal is reversed due to the 180° phase shift, and it is demonstrated that the exit circularly polarized output signal can be phase advanced or phase retarded by 180 ° upon rotation of the elements comprising the structure. This feature allows the surface to act as a spatial phase shifter. In this paper the beam steering capabilities of a 10 × 10 array of such elements are demonstrated. Here the individual elements comprising the array are rotated relative to each other in order to generate a progressive phase shift. At normal incidence the 3 dB Axial Ratio Bandwidth for LHCP to RHCP conversion is 5.3% and the insertion loss was found to be -2.3 dB, with minimum axial ratio of 0.05 dB. This array is shown to be able to steer a beam from -40 ° to +40 ° while holding axial ratio at the pointing angle to below 4 dB. The measured radiation patterns match the theoretical calculation and full-wave simulation results. © 2010 IEEE.

The spatial coherence of a nanosecond pulsed germanium collisionally excited x-ray laser is measured experimentally for three target configurations. The diagnostic is based on Young's slit interference fringes with a dispersing element to resolve the 23.2- and 23.6-nm spectral lines. Target configurations include a double-slab target, known as the injector, and geometries in which the injector image is image relayed to seed either an additional single-slab target or a second double-slab target. A special feature of this study is the observation of the change in the apparent source size with angle of refraction across the diverging laser beam. Source sizes derived with a Gaussian source model decrease from 44 mu m for the injector target by a variable factor of as much as 2, according to target configuration, for beams leaving the additional amplifiers after strong refraction in the plasma. The time-integrated spatial coherence of neonlike germanium x-ray laser radiation has been studied with a new dispersing coherence diagnostic. Angle-dependent spatial coherence data are recorded by sampling the diverging beam at each lasing wavelength in several directions simultaneously. Measurements of the spatial coherence, and hence effective source sizes, relevant to the output beams from double-slab targets for the J = 2-1 spectral lines at wavelengths 28.6, 23.6, and 23.2 nm and for the J = 0-1 line at 19.6 nm show differences, which indicate different conditions in the plasma volume amplifying these emissions. Targets are pumped by subnanosecond pulse drivers, with and without a prepulse, but 19.6 nm emission is detected only in the prepulsed case. The differences are discussed in terms of the time evolution of the spectral lines. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

Recently, the use of plasma optics to improve temporal pulse contrast has had a remarkable impact on the field of high- power laser-solid density interaction physics. Opening an avenue to previously unachievable plasma density gradients in the high intensity focus, this advance has enabled researchers to investigate new regimes of harmonic generation and ion acceleration. Until now, however, plasma optics for fundamental laser reflection have been used in the sub-relativistic intensity regime (10(15) - 10(16)Wcm(-2)) showing high reflectivity (similar to 70%) and good focusability. Therefore, the question remains as to whether plasma optics can be used for such applications in the relativistic intensity regime (> 10(18)Wcm(-2)). Previous studies of plasma mirrors (PMs) indicate that, for 40 fs laser pulses, the reflectivity fluctuates by an order of magnitude and that focusability of the beam is lost as the intensity is increased above 5 x 10(16)Wcm(-2). However, these experiments were performed using laser pulses with a contrast ratio of similar to 10(7) to generate the reflecting surface. Here, we present results for PM operation using high contrast laser pulses resulting in a new regime of operation - the high contrast plasma mirror (HCPM). In this regime, pulses with contrast ratio > 10(10) are used to form the PM surface at > 10(19)Wcm(-2), displaying excellent spatial filtering, reflected near- field beam profile of the fundamental beam and reflectivities of 60 +/- 5%. Efficient second harmonic generation is also observed with exceptional beam quality suggesting that this may be a route to achieving the highest focusable harmonic intensities. Plasma optics therefore offer the opportunity to manipulate ultra-intense laser beams both spatially and temporally. They also allow for ultrafast frequency up-shifting without detrimental effects due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) or reduced focusability which frequently occur when nonlinear crystals are used for frequency conversion.

An orthogonal vector approach is proposed for the synthesis of multi-beam directional modulation (DM) transmitters. These systems have the capability of concurrently projecting independent data streams into different specified spatial directions while simultaneously distorting signal constellations in all other directions. Simulated bit error rate (BER) spatial distributions are presented for various multi-beam system configurations in order to illustrate representative examples of physical layer security performance enhancement that can be achieved.

An inhomogeneous spatial distribution of laser accelerated carbon/oxygen ions produced via the hydrodynamic ambipolar expansion of CO2 clusters has been measured by using CR-39 detectors. An inhomogeneous etch pits spatial distribution has appeared on the etched CR-39 detector installed on the laser propagation direction, while homogeneous ones are appeared on those installed at 45°and 90°from the laser propagation direction. From the range of ions in CR-39 obtained by using the multi-step etching technique, the averaged energies of carbon/oxygen ions for all directions are determined as 0.78 ± 0.09 MeV/n. The number of ions in the laser propagation direction is about 1.5 times larger than those in other directions. The inhomogeneous etch pits spatial distribution in the laser propagation direction could originate from an ion beam collimation and modulation by the effect of electromagnetic structures created in the laser plasma.
