We calculate elastic scattering of positronium (Ps) by the Xe atom using the recently developed pseudopotential method (Fabrikant and Gribakin 2014 Phys. Rev. A 90 052717) and review general features of Ps scattering from heavier rare-gas atoms: Ar, Kr and Xe. The total scattering cross section is dominated by two contributions: elastic scattering and Ps ionization (break-up). To calculate the Ps ionization cross sections we use the binary-encounter method for Ps collisions with an atomic target. Our results for the ionization cross section agree well with previous calculations carried out in the impulse approximation. Our total Ps–Xe cross section, when plotted as a function of the projectile velocity, exhibits similarity with the electron-Xe cross section for the collision velocities higher than 0.8 a.u., and agrees very well with the measurements at Ps velocities above 0.5 a.u.

In recent years there have been many studies of multiple ionization of closed shell rare gas atoms by intense laser fields. Until now no similar work has been done in the study of more diverse targets such as negative ions where low binding energies and strong electron correlations could yield distinctive behaviour. We present the first results of ionization of more than one electron from a range of atomic negative ions by intense laser pulses. Although these pulses are long by modern standards, and tend to produce sequential ionization in atoms, the positive ion yields from the negative ions do not depend predictably on the ionization potentials. This suggests that there may, intriguingly, be an alternative mechanism enhancing double ionization at low intensities.

The dynamics of high energetic electrons (>= 11.7 eV) in a modified industrial confined dual-frequency capacitively coupled RF discharge (Exelan, Lam Research Inc.), operated at 1.937 MHz and 27.118 MHz, is investigated by means of phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Operating in a He-O-2. plasma with small rare gas admixtures the emission is measured, with one-dimensional spatial resolution along the discharge axis. Both the low and high frequency RF cycle are resolved. The diagnostic is based on time dependent measurements of the population densities of specifically chosen excited rare gas states. A time dependent model, based on rate equations, describes the dynamics of the population densities of these levels. Based on this model and the comparison of the excitation of various rare gas states, with different excitation thresholds, time and space resolved electron temperature, propagation velocity and qualitative electron density as well as electron energy distribution functions are determined. This information leads to a better understanding of the dual-frequency sheath dynamics and shows, that separate control of ion energy and electron density is limited.

The role of dispersion or van de Waals (VDW) interactions in imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids is studied within the framework of density functional theory, using a recently developed non-empirical functional [M. Dion, H. Rydberg, E. Schroder, D. C. Langreth, and B. I. Lundqvist, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)], as efficiently implemented in the SIESTA code [G. Roman-Perez and J. M. Soler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 096102 (2009)]. We present results for the equilibrium structure and lattice parameters of several crystalline phases, finding a general improvement with respect to both the local density (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximations (GGA). Similar to other systems characterized by VDW bonding, such as rare gas and benzene dimers as well as solid argon, equilibrium distances and volumes are consistently overestimated by approximate to 7%, compared to -11% within LDA and 11% within GGA. The intramolecular geometries are retained, while the intermolecular distances and orientations are significantly improved relative to LDA and GGA. The quality is superior to that achieved with tailor-made empirical VDW corrections ad hoc [M. G. Del Popolo, C. Pinilla, and P. Ballone, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 144705 (2007)]. We also analyse the performance of an optimized version of this non-empirical functional, where the screening properties of the exchange have been tuned to reproduce high-level quantum chemical calculations [J. Klimes, D. Bowler, and A. Michaelides, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22, 074203 (2010)]. The results for solids are even better with volumes and geometries reproduced within 2% of experimental data. We provide some insight into the issue of polymorphism of [bmim][Cl] crystals, and we present results for the geometry and energetics of [bmim][Tf] and [mmim][Cl] neutral and charged clusters, which validate the use of empirical force fields. The generation of high harmonics from solid-density plasmas promises the production of attosecond (as) pulses orders of magnitude brighter than those from conventional rare gas sources. However, while spatial and spectral emission of surface harmonics has been characterized in detail in many experiments proof that the harmonic emission is indeed phase locked and thus bunched in as-pulses has only been delivered recently (Nomura et al 2009 Nat. Phys. 5 124-8). In this paper, we discuss the experimental setup of our extreme ultraviolet (XUV) autocorrelation (AC) device in detail and show the first two-photon ionization and subsequent AC experiment using solid target harmonics. In addition, we describe a simple analytical model to estimate the chirp between the individual generated harmonics in the sub- and mildly relativistic regime and validate it using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Finally, we propose several methods applicable to surface harmonics to extend the temporal pulse characterization to higher photon energies and for the reconstruction of the spectral phase between the individual harmonics. The experiments described in this paper prove unambiguously that harmonic emission from solid-density plasmas indeed occurs as a train of sub- femtosecond pulses and thus fulfills the most important property for a next-generation as-pulse source of unprecedented brightness.
