A series of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and nitriles of significant interest in the fragrance industry have been prepared using Grubbs' catalysts in cross-metathesis reactions of electron-deficient olefins (i.e., acrolein, crotonaldehyde, methacrolein, and acrylonitrile) with various 1-alkenes, including 1-decene, 1-octene, 1-hexene and 2-allyloxy-6-methylheptane. The latter is of particular interest, as it has not previously being used as a substrate in cross-metathesis reactions and allows access to valuable intermediates for the synthesis of new fragrances. Most reactions gave good selectivity of the desired CM product (>= 90%). Detailed optimisation and mechanistic studies have been performed on the cross-metathesis of acrolein with 1-decene. Recycling of the catalyst has been attempted using ionic liquids.

The effect of tacticity on the conformational properties of poly(olefin sulfone)s was studied. Tactic polymers, prepared from racemic thiirane monomers using chiral inititators were compared with atactic polymers prepared by free radical co-polymerisation of the 1-olefin with sulfur dioxide. Analysis of the XRD patterns showed that the tactic polymers formed more ordered structures in the bulk with longer layer spacings, consistent with a model in which their side chains meet at the tips in contrast with the atactic polymers whose side chains interdigitate. 13C MAS nmr experiments suggest that as tacticity increases so too does the proportion of C-S bonds in the gauche conformation, however the proportion of S-C bonds in the trans conformation falls, in contrast to a reported molecular mechanics study. Finally, DSC measurements on the polymers with longer side chains showed the presence of two endotherms on heating, illustrating definite liquid crystalline behaviour.

We studied the alpha-olefin selectivity in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis using density functional theory (131717) calculations. We calculated the relevant elementary steps from C-2 to C-6 species. Our results showed that the barriers of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions were constant with different chain lengths, and the chemisorption energies of alpha-olefins from DFT calculations also were very similar, except for C-2 species. A simple expression of the paraffin/olefin ratio was obtained based on a kinetic model. Combining the expression of the paraffin/olefin ratio and our calculation results, experimental findings are satisfactorily explained. We found that the physical origin of the chain length dependence of paraffin/olefin ratio is the chain length dependence of both the van der Waals interaction between adsorbed alpha-olefins and metal surfaces and the entropy difference between adsorbed and gaseous alpha-olefins, and that the greater chemisorption energy of ethylene is the main reason for the abnormal ethane/ethylene ratio. A series of metathesis polymers and copolymers have been formed and their structures were analysed by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Noble metal and non-noble metal salt catalysts are distinguished by their behaviour in various solvents. Thus, in phenolic solvents, the former class produce alternating copolymers from cyclopentene and norbornene, while the latter are unaffected and produce random copolymers. In contrast, ether solvents have the effect of markedly increasing the cis content of polymers from the latter catalysts while the former are unaffected.

Ring-opened metathesis polymers and copolymers have been formed from norbornene, norbornadiene, a range of their derivatives, and cyclopentene using RuCl2(CHPh)(PCy3)(2), as catalyst. C-13 NMR analysis of the polymers illustrate a rather selective propagation reaction. The catalyst is highly regioselective, and the polymers are generally high trans with a strong isotactic bias. However, polymers from diene monomers tend to be less isotactic than those from the corresponding monoenes, and in the case of 7-methylnorbornadiene the polymer has an overall syndiotactic bias. A rate enhancing effect, noted previously, due to an oxygen atom proximate to the monomer double bond, is less pronounced than with other initiators. Catalyst activity, in the case of certain diene monomers, was shown to be monomer dependent and rate enhancements were also achieved using phenol as solvent. The results are interpreted in terms of the steric and electronic properties of both the catalyst and the monomers.

A synthesis of highly substituted and sterically congested bicyclo[4.3.1]decenes, a structure embedded in the core 4,7,6-tricyclic system of natural caryolanes, was successfully achieved via a ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction of syn-1,3-diene substituted cyclohexanols. The construction of the diene substrates, starting from 4-acetoxy-3-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1-one, employed diastereoselective copper-mediated conjugate addition and Grignard reactions. An X-ray crystal structure determination of a key synthetic intermediate confirmed the relative stereochemistry of the RCM bicyclic product.

Almost alternating copolymers of bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene and cyclopentene have been formed by ring-opening metathesis polymerization using a RuCl3-phenol catalyst system; this highly novel result is attributed to differential steric influences exerted by a hydrogen-bonded solvent cage which encloses the catalyst site.

A linear cation-decorated polymeric support with tuneable surface properties and microstructure has been prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP) of a pyrrolidinium-functionalised norbornene-based monomer with cyclooctene. The derived peroxophosphotungstate-based polymer-immobilised ionic liquid phase (PIILP) catalyst is an efficient and recyclable system for the epoxidation of allylic alcohols and alkenes, with only a minor reduction in performance on successive cycles.
