Resumo:
Recent progress in laboratory-based electron-ion scattering is reviewed, and the sensitivity of observed interference structure as a probe of collision dynamics is discussed. The extension of our use of positive ions as scattering targets to photon-ion interactions is demonstrated with the first ion-beam measurements for the fragmentation of a molecular ion, H-2(+), using intense femtosecond laser pulses.

The viability of using beams of molecular ions as a target for strong field fragmentation studies using intense ultra-short laser pulses is demonstrated. In this way the production mechanism for multiply charged ions in strong fields may be elucidated.

Deep inner-shell photodetachment of negative ions is shown to differ qualitatively and quantitatively from the corresponding process in neutral atoms and positive ions. As an example, calculations of the photodetachment of Li- out of the 1s shell, using an augmented R-matrix methodology, are presented and show numerous structures over a broad energy region including a new phenomenon: Auger decay of a shape resonance. Li- was selected because it is the simplest multishell negative ion and is amenable to experimental scrutiny.

Large nonlinear acoustic waves are discussed in a plasma made up of cold supersonic and adiabatic subsonic positive ions, in the presence of hot isothermal electrons, with the help of Sagdeev pseudopotential theory. In this model, no solitons are found at the acoustic speed, and no compositional parameter ranges exist where solutions of opposite polarities can coexist. All nonlinear modes are thus super-acoustic, but polarity changes are possible. The upper limits on admissible structure velocities come from different physical arguments, in a strict order when the fractional cool ion density is increased: infinite cold ion compression, warm ion sonic point, positive double layers, negative double layers, and finally, positive double layers again. However, not all ranges exist for all mass and temperature ratios. Whereas the cold and warm ion sonic point limitations are always present over a wide range of mass and temperature ratios, and thus positive polarity solutions can easily be obtained, double layers have a more restricted existence range, specially if polarity changes are sought. The scenario of electron capture and loss has been recently proposed for the formation of negative ion and neutral atom beams with up to MeV kinetic energy [S. Ter-Avetisyan, Appl. Phys. Lett. 99, 051501 (2011)]. Validation of these processes and of their generic nature is here provided in experiments where the ion source and the interaction medium have been spatially separated. Fast positive ions accelerated from a laser plasma source are sent through a cold spray where their charge is changed. Such formed neutral atom or negative ion has nearly the same momentum as the original positive ion. Experiments are released for protons, carbon, and oxygen ions and corresponding beams of negative ions and neutral atoms have been obtained. The electron capture and loss phenomenon is confirmed to be the origin of the negative ion and neutral atom beams. The equilibrium ratios of different charge components and cross sections have been measured. Our method is general and allows the creation of beams of neutral atoms and negative ions for different species which inherit the characteristics of the positive ion source.

We have measured mass spectra for positive ions for low-energy electron impact on thymine using a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Using computer controlled data acquisition, mass spectra have been acquired for electron impact energies up to 100 eV in steps of 0.5 eV. Ion yield curves for most of the fragment ions have been determined by fitting groups of adjacent peaks in the mass spectra with sequences of normalized Gaussians. The ion yield curves have been normalized by comparing the sum of the ion yields to the average of calculated total ionization cross sections. Appearance energies have been determined. The nearly equal appearance energies of 83 u and 55 u observed in the present work strongly indicate that near threshold the 55 u ion is formed directly by the breakage of two bonds in the ring, rather than from a successive loss of HNCO and CO from the parent ion. Likewise 54 u is not formed by CO loss from 82 u. The appearance energies are in a number of cases consistent with the loss of one or more hydrogen atoms from a heavier fragment, but 70 u is not formed by hydrogen loss from 71 u.

It is now well established that energetic electron emission, nonsequential ionization, and high harmonic generation, produced during the interaction of intense, femtosecond laser pulses with atoms (and atomic positive ions), can be explained by invoking rescattering of the active electron in the laser field, the so-called rescattering mechanism. In contrast for negative ions, the role of rescattering has not been established experimentally. By irradiating F- ions with ultrashort laser pulses, F+ ion yields as a function of intensity for both linearly and circularly polarized light have been measured. We find that, at intensities well below saturation for F+ production by sequential ionization, there is a small but significant enhancement in the yield for the case of linearly polarized light, providing the first clear experimental evidence for the existence of the rescattering mechanism in negative ions.

Theoretical and numerical studies are carried out of the nonlinear amplitude modulation of dust-ion acoustic waves propagating in an unmagnetized weakly coupled plasma comprised of electrons, positive ions, and charged dust grains, considering perturbations oblique to the carrier wave propagation direction. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation, exhibits a wide instability region, which depends on both the angle theta between the modulation and propagation directions and the dust number density n(d). Explicit expressions for the instability increment and threshold are obtained. The possibility and conditions for the existence of different types of localized excitations are also discussed. Theoretical and numerical studies are presented of the nonlinear amplitude modulation of dust-acoustic (DA) waves propagating in an unmagnetized three component, weakly-coupled, fully ionized plasma consisting of electrons, positive ions and charged dust particles, considering perturbations oblique to the carrier wave propagation direction. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation (NLSE), shows that the wave may become unstable; the stability criteria depend on the angle theta between the modulation and propagation directions. Explicit expressions for the instability rate and threshold have been obtained in terms of the dispersion laws of the system. The possibility and conditions for the existence of different types of localized excitations have also been discussed.
Ion-acoustic waves in a two-electron-temperatute plasma: oblique modulation and envelope excitations
Resumo:
Theoretical and numerical studies are carried out for the nonlinear amplitude modulation of ion-acoustic waves propagating in an unmagnetized, collisionless, three-component plasma composed of inertial positive ions moving in a background of two thermalized electron populations. Perturbations oblique to the carrier wave propagation direction have been considered. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation, shows that the wave may become unstable; the stability criteria depend on the angle theta between the modulation and propagation directions. Different types of localized excitations (envelope solitary waves) are shown to exist in qualitative agreement with satellite observations in the magnetosphere.

An analytical model based on Lagrangian variables is presented for the description of ion-acoustic waves propagating in an unmagnetized, collisionless, three-component plasma composed of inertial positive ions and two thermalized electron populations, characterized by different temperatures. The wave's amplitude is shown to be modulationally unstable. Different types of localized envelope electrostatic excitations are shown to exist, and their forms are analytically and numerically investigated in terms of the plasma dispersion and nonlinearity laws. These results are in qualitative agreement with satellite observations in the magnetosphere. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

The nonlinear dynamics of a rotating magnetoplasma consisting of electrons, positrons and stationary positive ions is considered. The basic set of hydrodynamic and Poisson equations are reduced to a Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation for the electric potential. The ZK equation is solved by applying an improved modified extended tanh-function method (2008 Phys. Lett. A 372 5691) and its characteristics are investigated. A set of new solutions are derived, including localized solitary waves, periodic nonlinear waveforms and divergent (explosive) pulses. The characteristics of these nonlinear excitations are investigated in detail.

Here a self-consistent continuum model is presented for a narrow gap plane-parallel dc glow discharge. The set of governing equations consisting of continuity and momentum equations for positive ions, fast (emitted by the cathode) and slow electrons (generated by fast electron impact ionization) coupled with Poisson's equation is treated by the technique of matched asymptotic expansions. Explicit results are obtained in the asymptotic limit: (chi delta) much less than 1, where chi = e Phi(a)/kT, delta = (r(D)/L)(2) (Phi(a) is the applied voltage, r(D) is the Debye radius) and pL much greater than 1(Hg mm cm), where p is the gas pressure and L is the gap length. In the case of high pressure, the electron energy relaxation length is much smaller than the gap length, and so the local field approximation is valid. The discharge space divides naturally into a cathode fall sheath, a quasineutral plasma region, and an anode fall sheath. The electric potential distribution obtained for each region in a (semi)analytical form is asymptotically matched to the adjoining regions in the region of overlap. The effects of the gas pressure, gap length, and applied voltage on the length of each region are investigated. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S1070-664X(00)01302-1].
