Previously we have shown that organic solutes can be extracted from ionic liquids (ILs) with supercritical CO2 and that ILs can be induced to separate from organic and aqueous mixtures by applying gaseous CO2 pressure. Thus, we are interested in the solvent strength of IL/CO2 mixtures. Here we use 4-nitroaniline, N,N-diethyl-4-nitroaniline and Reichardt's dye 33 to determine the Kamlet-Taft parameters for four different imidazolium based ILs and their mixtures with CO2 at 25 and 40degreesC. The effect of temperature and carbon dioxide concentration on these parameters was determined. The polarizability parameter depends weakly on the CO2 concentration. However, the hydrogen bond donating ability and the hydrogen bond accepting ability are virtually independent Of CO2 pressure. The results indicate that the strong interactions between ILs and probe molecules are not influenced by CO2.

Intestinal permeability tests have been used to screen for a wide range of small intestinal diseases, including coeliac disease and enteric infections. Several probe molecules have been used to investigate intestinal permeability including monosaccharides, disaccharides, 51Cr-EDTA and polyethyleneglycol. While many factors may affect intestinal permeability tests, the use of two probe molecules, for example, lactulose and mannitol, and the expression of the result as a ratio minimises the effects of these extraneous factors. Rendering the test solution hyperosmolar was also found to increase the sensitivity of the test in detecting coeliac disease. Intestinal permeability is characteristically elevated in untreated coeliac disease, with a sensitivity of up to 96% for the dual sugar techniques. The reason for this is a consistent increase in the absorption of lactulose (via the paracellular route) due to increased "leakiness" of the intestine and a reduction in the absorption of mannitol (via the transcellular route) due to a reduction in surface area as a result of villous atrophy. The intestinal permeability test allows subjects to be selected for jejunal biopsy in whom the clinical features are compatible with coeliac disease and in timing a follow-up biopsy. It has been postulated that raised intestinal permeability may be involved in the pathogenesis of coeliac disease. Recently, serum measurements of the probe molecules may have a valuable role, particularly in paediatric patients. Sucrose permeability has also been proposed as an accurate marker of adult coeliac disease and shows promise as a noninvasive test.

A new method to spatially probe heterogeneous catalysed reactions within a packed bed of catalyst has been developed. The spatial resolution is achieved using a stationary perforated capillary coupled to a mass spectrometer while the catalyst bed is moved. The oxidation of CO promoted by H-2 over a Pd catalyst has been used to demonstrate the technique.

This paper reports the detailed description and validation of a fully automated, computer controlled analytical method to spatially probe the gas composition and thermal characteristics in packed bed systems. As an exemplar, we have examined a heterogeneously catalysed gas phase reaction within the bed of a powdered oxide supported metal catalyst. The design of the gas sampling and the temperature recording systems are disclosed. A stationary capillary with holes drilled in its wall and a moveable reactor coupled with a mass spectrometer are used to enable sampling and analysis. This method has been designed to limit the invasiveness of the probe on the reactor by using the smallest combination of thermocouple and capillary which can be employed practically. An 80 mu m (O.D.) thermocouple has been inserted in a 250 mu m (O.D.) capillary. The thermocouple is aligned with the sampling holes to enable both the gas composition and temperature profiles to be simultaneously measured at equivalent spatially resolved positions. This analysis technique has been validated by studying CO oxidation over a 1% Pt/Al2O3 catalyst and the spatial resolution profiles of chemical species concentrations and temperature as a function of the axial position within the catalyst bed are reported.

The change in the Pt electronic structure following the adsorption of an a,ß-unsaturated aldehyde and ketone was followed by in situ HERFD-XANES in the liquid phase. The resulting shift in the Pt Fermi energy is in good agreement with the molecule adsorption energy trends calculated by DFT and provides insight into the reaction selectivity.

The ultrafast photo-physical properties of DNA are crucial in providing a stable basis for life. Although the DNA bases efficiently absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation, this energy can be dissipated to the surrounding environment by the rapid conversion of electronic energy to vibrational energy within about a picosecond. The intrinsic nature of this internal conversion process has previously been demonstrated through gas phase experiments on the bases, supported by theoretical calculations. De-excitation rates appear to be accelerated when individual bases are hydrogen bonded to solvent molecules or their complementary Watson-Crick pair. In this paper, the first gas-phase measurements of electronic relaxation in DNA nucleosides following UV excitation are reported. Using a pump-probe ionization scheme, the lifetimes for internal conversion to the ground state following excitation at 267 nm are found to be reduced by around a factor of two for adenosine, cytidine and thymidine compared with the isolated bases. These results are discussed in terms of a recent proposition that a charge transfer state provides an additional internal conversion pathway mediated by proton transfer through a sugar to base hydrogen bond.

The electron energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) at the O K edge has been studied in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). The electronic structure of YSZ for compositions between 3 and 15 mol % Y2O3 has been computed using a pseudopotential-based technique to calculate the local relaxations near the O vacancies. The results showed phase transition from the tetragonal to cubic YSZ at 10 mol % of Y2O3, reproducing experimental observations. Using the relaxed defect geometry, calculation of the ELNES was carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. The results show very good agreement with the experimental O K-edge signal, demonstrating the power of using ELNES to probe the stabilization mechanism in doped metal oxides.

The equilibrium polymerization of sulfur is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. The potential energy model is based on density functional results for the cohesive energy, structural, and vibrational properties as well as reactivity of sulfur rings and chains [Part I, J. Chem. Phys. 118, 9257 (2003)]. Liquid samples of 2048 atoms are simulated at temperatures 450less than or equal toTless than or equal to850 K and P=0 starting from monodisperse S-8 molecular compositions. Thermally activated bond breaking processes lead to an equilibrium population of unsaturated atoms that can change the local pattern of covalent bonds and allow the system to approach equilibrium. The concentration of unsaturated atoms and the kinetics of bond interchanges is determined by the energy DeltaE(b) required to break a covalent bond. Equilibrium with respect to the bond distribution is achieved for 15less than or equal toDeltaE(b)less than or equal to21 kcal/mol over a wide temperature range (Tgreater than or equal to450 K), within which polymerization occurs readily, with entropy from the bond distribution overcompensating the increase in enthalpy. There is a maximum in the polymerized fraction at temperature T-max that depends on DeltaE(b). This fraction decreases at higher temperature because broken bonds and short chains proliferate and, for Tless than or equal toT(max), because entropy is less important than enthalpy. The molecular size distribution is described well by a Zimm-Schulz function, plus an isolated peak for S-8. Large molecules are almost exclusively open chains. Rings tend to have fewer than 24 atoms, and only S-8 is present in significant concentrations at all T. The T dependence of the density and the dependence of polymerization fraction and degree on DeltaE(b) give estimates of the polymerization temperature T-f=450+/-20 K. Experimental results at X-band are used to compare the electromagnetic scattering from a printed reflectarray cell, which is constructed on 500 mu m thick layers of three different nematic state liquid crystals. It is shown that a small voltage can be used to vary the permittivity of the tunable substrate and thereby control the phase of the reflected signals. Numerical results using Ansoft HFSS are compared with the measured phase, resonant frequencies and signal attenuation for two orientations of the liquid crystal molecules. Data fitting is employed to quantify the loss tangent and the permittivity values of the three anisotropic specimens. The performance trade-offs that are imposed by the use of commercially available materials are discussed, and the computer model is used to specify the electrical properties of a liquid crystal mixture, which can provide a signal loss of <1 dB and a dynamic phase range of 300 degrees from the patch elements at 10 GHz.

Collisions between H-3(+) and HD in molecular clouds lead to the fractionation of deuterium in H2D+ at temperatures below 20 K. In this article, we describe the chemistry of H2D+ and discuss how variations in temperature and elemental abundances affect the level of fractionation in H2D+ and other species. We describe how accretion of gas-phase molecules on to cold dust grains enhances the deuteration in several molecules including doubly deuterated molecules. Mie show that the ion-neutral drift velocities attained in slow Alfven waves can destroy H2D+ in non-thermal reactions. As a result, the degree of fractionation can be reduced and we discuss observational consequences of such a model for the dark dust cloud TMC-1.

A new chemical model of the circumstellar envelope surrounding the carbon-rich star IRC+10216 is developed that includes carbon-containing molecules with up to 23 carbon atoms. The model consists of 3851 reactions involving 407 gas-phase species. Sizeable abundances of a variety of large molecules - including carbon clusters, unsaturated hydrocarbons and cyanopolyynes - have been calculated. Negative molecular ions of chemical formulae C-n(-) and CnH- (7 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 23) exist in considerable abundance, with peak concentrations at distances from the central star somewhat greater than their neutral counterparts. The negative ions might be detected in radio emission, or even in the optical absorption of background field stars. The calculated radial distributions of the carbon-chain CnH radicals are looked at carefully and compared with interferometric observations.

We present the first results from a time-dependent chemical model to include a gas-phase reaction scheme for producing doubly-deuterated species. Under normal conditions the formation of these species is inefficient. However, when the effects of the freeze out of gas phase species onto grains is included in the chemistry we find that the fractionation of both singly and doubly deuterated species is enhanced. We compare the predictions from our models with recent observations of deuterated molecules in L134N and find that, contrary to previous expectations, we can reproduce the observed levels of fractionation without recourse to an active grain-surface chemistry.
