The extensive clinical experience of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin AT(1) receptor antagonists as antihypertensive agents provide numerous examples of anecdotal evidence of improvements in cognition and mood. This study aimed to determine the effect of chronic treatment with the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, perindopril, and the angiotensin AT(1) receptor antagonist, candesartan, on central neurotransmitter levels in the rat. Perindopril (1.0mg/kg/day) or candesartan (10mg/kg/day) was administered via the drinking water at for 1 week, while controls received water alone. At the end of treatment rats were sacrificed, brains removed and discrete regions dissected and analysed for noradrenaline, dopamine and its major metabolites, and serotonin content. As shown previously we found an increase in striatal dopamine levels after perindopril treatment, though this did not extend to the mesolimbic system with neurotransmitter levels unchanged in the hippocampus, nucleus accumbens and frontal cortex. Conversely, candesartan administration produced no change in dopamine, but significant decreases in both DOPAC and HVA in the striatum. In addition chronic candesartan infusion produced a significant increase in the levels of hippocampal noradrenaline and serotonin; and frontal cortex serotonin content. These results demonstrate that while angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin AT(1) receptor antagonists act as antihypertensives by affecting the renin-angiotensin system, they have divergent actions on brain neurochemistry.

In this study, we reported that small glutamine-rich TPR-containing protein (SGT) interacted with not only Hsp90alpha but also Hsp90beta. Confocal analysis showed that treatment of cells with Hsp90-specific inhibitor geldanamycin (GA) disrupted the interaction of SGT with Hsp90beta and this contributed to the increase of nuclear localization of SGT in HeLa cells. The increased nuclear localization of SGT was further confirmed by the Western blotting in GA-treated HeLa cells and H1299 cells. In our previous study, SGT was found to be a new pro-apoptotic factor, so we wondered whether the sub-cellular localization of SGT was related with cell apoptosis. By confocal analysis we found that the nuclear import of SGT was significantly increased in STS-induced apoptotic HeLa cells, which implied that the sub-cellular localization of SGT was closely associated with Hsp90beta and apoptosis.

In this article, we present position indication functionality as obtained by using a retrodirective array, thereby allowing location information extraction of the position of the remote transmitter with which the retrodirective array is cooperating. This is carried out using straightforward circuitry with no requirement for complex angle of arrival algorithms, thereby giving a result in real time enabling tracking of fast moving transmitters. We show using a 10 x element retrodirective array, operating at 2.4 GHz that accuracies of far-field angle of arrival of within +/- 1 degrees over the arrays +/- 30 degrees azimuth field of view are possible. While in the near-field for angles of arrival of +/- 10 degrees it is possible to extract the position of a dipole source down to a resolution of 032 lambda. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fitted with two cannulae in the VTA and one cannula in the NTS for co-administration of the mu-opioid receptoragonist DAMGO in one site and the opioid antagonist naltrexone in the other. Injection of DAMGO into the VTA or the NTS stimulated feeding. The increase in food intake after DAMGO injection into the VTA was decreased following injection of naltrexone into the NTS. Furthermore, the increase in food intake after DAMGO injection into the NTS was decreased following injection of naltrexone into the VTA. These results suggest an opioid-mediated feeding association between the VTA and NTS. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
