A near-isothermal micro-trickle bed reactor operated under radio frequency heating was developed. The reactor bed was packed with nickel ferrite micro-particles of 110. μm diameter, generating heat by the application of RF field at 180. kHz. Hydrodynamics in a co-current configuration was analysed and heat transfer rates were determined at temperature ranging from 55 to 100. °C. A multi-zone reactor bed of several heating and catalytic zones was proposed in order to achieve near-isothermal operations. Exact positioning, number of the heating zones and length of the heating zones composed of a mixture of nickel ferrite and a catalyst were determined by solving a one dimensional model of heat transfer by conduction and convection. The conductive losses contributed up to 30% in the total thermal losses from the reactor. Three heating zones were required to obtain an isothermal length of 50. mm with a temperature non-uniformity of 2. K. A good agreement between the modelling and experimental results was obtained for temperature profiles of the reactor. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This paper reports the initial response of atomic nitrogen doped diamond like carbon (DLC) to endothelial cells in vitro. The introduction of nitrogen atoms/molecules to the diamond like carbon structures leads to an atomic structural change favorable to the attachment of human micro-vascular enclothelial cells. Whilst the semi-conductivity induced by nitrogen in DLC is thought to play a part, the increase in the inion-bonded N atoms and N-2 molecules in the atomic doped species (with the exclusion of the charged species) seems to contribute to the improved attachment of human microvascular endothelial cells. The increased endothelial attachment is associated with a lower work function and slightly higher water contact angle in the atomic doped films, where the heavy charged particles are excluded. The films used in the study were synthesized by the RF PECVD technique followed by post deposition doping with nitrogen, and afterwards the films were characterized by XPS, Raman spectroscopy, SIMS and Kelvin probe. The water contact angles were measured, and the counts of the adherent endothelial cells on the samples were carried out. This study is relevant and contributory to improving biocompatibility of surgical implants and prostheses.

Micro plasmas operated at ambient pressure with dimensions of the confining geometry in the order of a few ten micrometers to a millimeter are actually in the focus of interest due to the broad regime of applicability they offer and due to a similarly broad range of open physical questions. Here we present optical measurements within the discharge core and the effluent region of an especially developed micro discharge jet. To get an understanding of the complex system of this discharge it is important to analyse transport phenomena of energy and particles within both parts of the discharge by various highly sophisticated diagnostics. As a consequence of the limited access and the dimensions of the micro discharge most of these diagnostics are optical. Here we present diagnostics applied to determine spatially resolved absolute atomic oxygen densities as the most reactive constituent of the effluent, density maps of ozone as final reaction product of the gas chemical chain induced by the discharge and phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy yielding insight into the excitation dynamics of the discharge. Despite enormous potential for technological applications, fundamentals of stable non-equilibrium micro-plasmas at ambient pressure are still only partly understood. Micro-plasma jets are one sub-group of these plasma sources. For an understanding it is particularly important to analyse transport phenomena of energy and particles within and between the core and effluent of the discharge. The complexity of the problem requires the combination and correlation of various highly sophisticated diagnostics yielding different information with an extremely high temporal and spatial resolution. A specially designed rf microscale atmospheric pressure plasma jet (µ-APPJ) provides excellent access for optical diagnostics to the discharge volume and the effluent region. This allows detailed investigations of the discharge dynamics and energy transport mechanisms from the discharge to the effluent. Here we present examples for diagnostics applicable to different regions and combine the results. The diagnostics applied are optical emission spectroscopy (OES) in the visible and ultraviolet and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. By the latter spatially resolved absolutely calibrated density maps of atomic oxygen have been determined for the effluent. OES yields an insight into energy transport mechanisms from the core into the effluent. The first results of spatially and phase-resolved OES measurements of the discharge dynamics of the core are presented.

The particle size characteristics and encapsulation efficiency of microparticles prepared using triglyceride materials and loaded with two model water-soluble drugs were evaluated. Two emulsification procedures based on o/w and w/o/w methodologies were compared to a novel spray congealing procedure. After extensive modification of both emulsification methods, encapsulation efficiencies of 13.04% tetracycline HCl and 11.27% lidocaine HCl were achievable in a Witepsol (R)-based microparticle. This compares to much improved encapsulation efficiencies close to 100% for the spray congealing method, which was shown to produce spherical particles of similar to 58 mu m. Drug release studies from a Witepsol (R) formulation loaded with lidocaine HCl showed a temperature-dependent release mechanism, which displayed diffusion-controlled kinetics at temperatures similar to 25 degrees C, but exhibited almost immediate release when triggered using temperatures close to that of skin. Therefore, such a system may find application in topical semi-solid formulations, where a temperature-induced burst release is preferred.

The use of a charged-particle microbeam provides a unique opportunity to control precisely, the number of particles traversing individual cells and the localization of dose within the cell. The accuracy of 'aiming' and of delivering a precise number of particles crucially depends on the design and implementation of the collimation and detection system. This report describes the methods available for collimating and detecting energetic particles in the context of a radiobiological microbeam. The arrangement developed at the Gray Laboratory uses either a 'V'-groove or a thick-walled glass capillary to achieve 2-5 mu m spatial resolution. The particle detection system uses an 18 mu m thick transmission scintillator and photomultiplier tube to detect particles with >99% efficiency.

The abrasion seen on some of the retrieved CoCrMo hip joints has been reported to be caused by entrained hard particles in vivo. However, little work has been reported on the abrasion mechanisms of CoCrMo alloy in simulated body environments. Therefore. this study covers the mapping of micro-abrasion wear mechanisms of cast CoCrMo induced by third body hard particles under a wide range of abrasive test conditions. This study has a specific focus on covering the possible in vivo wear modes seen on metal-on-metal (MoM) surfaces. Nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests were also employed to further investigate the secondary wear mechanisms-nano-scale material deformation that involved in micro-abrasion processes. This work addresses the potential detrimental effects of third body hard particles in vivo such as increased wear rates (debris generation) and corrosion (metal-ion release). The abrasive wear mechanisms of cast CoCrMo have been investigated under various wear-corrosion conditions employing two abrasives, SiC (similar to 4 mu m) and Al(2)O(3) (similar to 1 mu m), in two test solutions, 0.9% NaCl and 25% bovine serum. The specific wear rates, wear mechanisms and transitions between mechanisms are discussed in terms of the abrasive size, volume fraction and the test solutions deployed. The work shows that at high abrasive volume fractions, the presence of protein enhanced the wear loss due to the enhanced particle entrainment, whereas at much lower abrasive volume fractions, protein reduced the wear loss by acting as a boundary lubricant or rolling elements which reduced the abrasivity (load per particle) of the abrasive particles. The abrasive wear rate and wear mechanisms of the CoCrMo are dependent on the nature of the third body abrasives, their entrainment into the contact and the presence of the proteins. Previous studies have established that some of the wear damage seen on cast CoCrMo joint surface is caused by entrained third-body hard particles. In this study, wet-cell micro-indentation and nano-scratch tests have been carried out with the direct aim of simulating wear damage induced by single abrasive particles entrained between the surfaces of cast CoCrMo hip implants. In situ electrochemical current noise measurements were uniquely performed to detect and study the wear-induced corrosion as well as the repassivation kinetics under the micro-/nano-scale tribological process. A mathematical model has been explored for the CoCrMo repassivation kinetics after surface oxide film rupture. Greater insights into the nature of the CoCrMo micro-/nano-scale wear-corrosion mechanisms and deformation processes are determined, including the identification of slip band formation, matrix/carbide deformation, nanocrystalline structure formation and strain-induced phase transformation. The electrochemical current noise provides evidence of instantaneous transient corrosion activity at the wearing surface resulting from partial oxide rupturing and stripping, concurrent with the indent/scratch.

The abrasion damage on retrieved CoCrMo based hip joints is reported to be influenced by the entrainment of micron and sub-micron sized debris/hard particles. This paper represents the first attempt to look into the effects of relatively soft abrasives with micron and sub-micron dimensions on the abrasion mechanisms and the abrasion-corrosion performance of the cast CoCrMo in simulated hip joint environments. A modified micro-abrasion tester incorporating a liquid tank and a three-electrode electrochemical cell was used. Al O (300 nm and 1 μm) and sub-micron sized BaSO abrasives were chosen as being comparable in the size and hardness to the wear particles found in vivo. Results show that the specific wear rates of cast CoCrMo are dependent on the abrasive particle size, hardness and volume concentration. Larger particle size, higher hardness and greater abrasive volume fractions gave greater wear rates. The wear-induced corrosion current generally increases with increasing wear rates, and the presence of proteins seems to suppress the wear-induced corrosion current especially when abrasive volume fractions were high. This study shows that the nature of abrasives and the test solutions are both important in determining the wear mechanisms and the abrasion-corrosion response of cast CoCrMo. These findings provide new and important insights into the in vivo wear mechanisms of CoCrMo. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electroless nickel composite (ENC) with various silicon carbide contents was deposited onto aluminium alloy (LM24) substrate. The wear behaviour and the microhardness of the composite coating samples were investigated and compared with particles free and aluminium substrate samples using micro-scale abrasion tester and microhardness tester respectively. The wear scar marks and wear volume were analysed by optical microscope. The wear tracks were further studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The embedded particles were found to get pressed into the matrix which helps resisting further wearing process for composite samples. However, random orientation of microcuts and microfallow were seen for ENC sample but more uniform wearing was observed for EN sample. The composite coating with low content of SiC was worn minimum. Early penetration into the substrate was seen for samples with higher SiC content. Microhardness was improved after heat treatment for all the samples containing various SiC content. Under dry sliding condition, inclusion of particles in the matrix did not improve the wearing resistance performance in as-deposited state. The wearing worsened as the content of the particles increased generally. However, on heat treatment, the composite coatings exhibited improved wear resistance and the best result was obtained from the one with low particle contents.

Electroless nickel (EN) and electroless nickel composite (ENC) coatings were deposited on aluminium alloy substrate, LM24. The micro abrasion test was conducted to study the wear behaviour of the coatings with the effect of SiC concentration. Microhardness of the coatings was tested also. The wear scars were analysed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The wear resistance was found to be improved in composite coating that has higher microhardness as compared to particles free and the bare aluminium substrate. In as-deposited condition for the composite coating, the wear volume increases on increase in SiC percentage in the coating but is found to be minimum for lower SiC percentage. The increase in hardness on heat treatment at 400°C is due to the hardening or grain coarsening with the formation Ni3P.

The absolute calibration of a microchannel plate (MCP) assembly using a Thomson spectrometer for laser-driven ion beams is described. In order to obtain the response of the whole detection system to the particles’ impact, a slotted solid state nuclear track detector (CR-39) was installed in front of the MCP to record the ions simultaneously on both detectors. The response of the MCP (counts/particles) was measured for 5–58 MeV carbon ions and for protons in the energy range2–17.3 MeV. The response of the MCP detector is non-trivial when the stopping range of particles becomes larger than the thickness of the detector. Protons with energiesE>~ 10 MeV are energetic enough that they can pass through the MCP detector. Quantitative analysis of the pits formed in CR-39 and the signal generated in the MCP allowed to determine the MCP response to particles in this energy range. Moreover, a theoretical model allows to predict the response of MCP at even higher proton energies. This suggests that in this regime the MCP response is a slowly decreasing function of energy, consistently with the decrease of the deposited energy. These calibration data will enable particle spectra to be obtained in absolute terms over a broad energy range.
