The geometry of tree branches can have considerable effect on their efficiency in terms of carbon export per unit carbon investment in structure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different design criteria using data describing the form of Picea sitchensis branches. Allometric analysis of the data suggests that resources are distributed to favour shoots with the greatest opportunity for extension into new space, with priority to the extension of the leader. The distribution of allometric relations of links (branch elements) was tested against two models: the pipe model, based on hydraulic transport requirements, and a static load model based on the requirement of shoots to provide mechanical resistance to static loads. Static load resistance required the load parameter to be proportional to the link radius raised to the power of 4. This was shown to be true within a 95% statistical confidence limit. The pipe model would require total distal length to be proportional to link radius squared but the measured branches did not conform well to this model. The comparison suggests that the diameters of branch elements were more related to the requirements for mechanical load. The cost of following a hydraulic design principle (the pipe model) in terms of mechanical efficiency was estimated and suggested that the pipe model branch would not be mechanically compromised but would use structural resources inefficiently. Resource allocation among branch elements was found to be consistent with mechanical stability criteria but also indicated the possibility of allocation based on other criteria, such as potential light interception by shoots. The evidence suggests that whilst branch topology increments by reiteration of units of morphogenesis, the geometry follows a functional design pattern.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on compressive strength of unfired compressed brick obtained with coal combustion residues (CCRs) produced by the Niger Coal Society. Preliminary physical and optical (XRD and SEM) characterisation of coal slag, including lixiviation tests, have been carried out. Cement powder, lateritic clayey soil and sand have been chosen as stabilizing agents for bricks. 12 dosages have been tested and about 300 bricks have been produced with a hand-operated press. Results show uniaxial compressive strengths (UCSs) ranging from 4 MPa to 27 MPa for the highest cement stabilisation ratio. UCS higher than 7.5 MPa have been observed for stabilisation with 20% of laterite +10% cement after 45 days of curing. Obtained bricks showed good mechanical resistance and low weight. No health threat has been detected for the obtained samples. Study developments are oriented towards the analysis of Pozzolanic properties of CCRs, properties of hydrated lime stabilisation, thermal properties and durability assessment.© 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Plastic wastes, and particularly plastic bags and sachets, are a major concern for urban and rural environment in African countries. In the last years some actions have been started for the plastic recycling like the artisanal production of paving blocks with melted plastic bags and sand, albeit with differences in production processes. Nevertheless, the environmental and economic impact of such activities is still to be confirmed. The aim of this study is to propose a methodology for assessing and comparing the environmental and energetic performances of artisanal methods, and for defining the overall quality of the produced blocks. This methodology has been shaped through the analysis of
production processes operated by artisans/small enterprises in West Africa and through physic-mechanical tests on the blocks. A questionnaire which allows an insight into the process and on the product has been developed and tested over five processes. Results show that a high input energy level is observed through all the processes, while considerable savings of energy could be achieved. Moreover, tests results confirmed the importance of the utilised plastic concerning thermal dilatation, mechanical resistance at higher temperature and cooling-shrinkage effects. In conclusion, doubts remain about the technical and environmental effectiveness of the sampled experiences, durability of the products and sustainability of this approach. Nevertheless, being the collection and recycling of plastic wastes a potential income generation activity for marginalised social groups in urban environment, a process optimisation could improve the impact of blocks production. Alternative recycling activities should also be considered.

The Niger Coal Society (Societé Nigérienne de Charbon – SONICHAR) produces electricity for local consumption in Tefereyre, 75 km north-west from Agadez, Niger. The coal combustion residuals production is about 150,000 tons per year. In order to reduce this environmental burden and to valorize these by-products, a study focusing on their physical and chemical features as well as on the mechanical resistance of compressed brick has been undertaken. Physical characterization of coal slag, chemical and lixiviation tests have been carried out, assessing the material main parameters, verifying the presence of hazardous composites and elements and comparing the obtained results with the findings of an in-deep literary review. Cement powder has been chosen as stabilizing agent as a preliminary option. Four different dosages have been tested and bricks have been produced with a hand-operated press. Compressive strength has been tested at different days of curing. Results show remarkable uniaxial compressive strengths (UCS) for all the mixes after cure, ranging from 4MPa up to more than 20MPa for the highest stabilization ratio. UCS higher than 5MPa have been observed for 20% and 30% cement stabilization ratios after only 7 days of cure, reaching respectively about 11MPa and 13MPa after 45 days. In conclusion obtained bricks show good mechanical resistance and low weight. No health threat has been detected from the obtained sample. Study developments are oriented towards the feasibility of the utilization of low-cost, locally available stabilization means, notably clay and cohesive soils, and on thermal properties assessment.

This study describes the physicochemical properties and in vitro resistance to encrustation of solvent cast films composed of either poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), prepared using different ratios of high (50,000) to low (4000) (molecular weight) m.wt., or blends of PCL and the polymeric antimicrobial complex, poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-iodine (PVP-I). The incorporation of PVP-I offered antimicrobial activity to the biomaterials. Films were characterised in terms of mechanical (tensile analysis, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis) and surface properties (dynamic contact angle analysis, scanning electron microscopy), whereas degradation (at 37degreesC in PBS at pH 7.4) was determined gravimetrically. The resistance of the films to encrustation was evaluated using an in vitro encrustation model. Reductions in the ratio of high:low-m.wt. PCL significantly reduced the ultimate tensile strength, % elongation at break and the advancing contact angle of the films. These effects were attributed to alterations in the amorphous content and the more hydrophilic nature of the films. Conversely, there were no alterations in Young's modulus, the viscoelastic properties and glass-transition temperature. Incorporation of PVP-I did not affect the mechanical or rheological properties of the films, indicative of a limited interaction between the two polymers in the solid state. Manipulation of the high:low m.wt. ratio of PCL significantly altered the degradation of the films, most notably following longer immersion periods, and resistance to encrustation. Accordingly, maximum degradation and resistance to encrustation was observed with the biomaterial composed of 40:60 high:low m.wt. ratios of PCL; however, the mechanical properties of this system were considered inappropriate for clinical application. Films composed of either 50:50 or 60:40 ratio of high:low m.wt. PCL offered an appropriate compromise between physicochemical properties and resistance to encrustation. This study has highlighted the important usefulness of degradable polymer systems as ureteral biomaterials

It has become clear over the last 15-20 years that the immediate effect of a wide range of environmental stresses, and of infection, on vascular plants is to increase the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and to impose oxidative stress on the cells. Since 1994, sufficient examples of similar responses in a broad range of marine macroalgae have been described to show that reactive oxygen metabolism also underlies the mechanisms by which seaweeds respond (and become resistant) to stress and infection. Desiccation, freezing, low temperatures, high light, ultraviolet radiation, and heavy metals all tend to result in a gradual and continued buildup of ROS because photosynthesis is inhibited and excess energy results in the formation of singlet oxygen. The response to other stresses (infection or oligosaccharides which signal that infection is occurring, mechanical stress, hyperosmotic shock) is quite different-a more rapid and intense, but short-lived production of ROS, described as an

The chemical and mechanical stability of slag activated with two different concentrations of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) after exposure to elevated temperatures ranging from 200 to 800 °C with an increment of 200 °C has been examined. Compressive strengths and pH of the hardened pastes before and after the exposure were determined. The various decomposition phases formed were identified using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that Na2SO4 activated slag has a better resistance to the degradation caused by exposure to elevated temperature up to 600 °C than Portland cement system as its relative strengths are superior. The finer slag and higher Na2SOconcentration gave better temperature resistance. Whilst the pH of the hardened pastes decreased with an increase in temperature, it still maintained a sufficiently high pH for the protection of reinforcing bar against corrosion.

Thermoresponsive polymeric platforms are used to optimise drug delivery in pharmaceutical systems and bioactive medical devices. However, the practical application of these systems is compromised by their poor mechanical properties. This study describes the design of thermoresponsive semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (s-IPNs) based on cross-linked p(NIPAA) or p(NIPAA-co-HEMA) hydrogels containing poly(e-caprolactone) designed to address this issue. Using DSC, the lower critical solution temperature of the co-polymer and p(NIPAA) matrices were circa 34 °C and 32 °C, respectively. PCL was physically dispersed within the hydrogel matrices as confirmed using confocal scanning laser microscopy and DSC and resulted in marked changes in the mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength, Young's modulus) without adversely compromising the elongation properties. P(NIPAA) networks containing dispersed PCL exhibited thermoresponsive swelling properties following immersion in buffer (pH 7), with the equilibrium-swelling ratio being greater at 20 °C than 37 °C and greatest for p(NIPAA)/PCL systems at 20 °C. The incorporation of PCL significantly lowered the equilibrium swelling ratio of the various networks but this was not deemed practically significant for s-IPNs based on p(NIPAA). Thermoresponsive release of metronidazole was observed from s-IPN composed of p(NIPAA)/PCL at 37 °C but not from p(NIPAA-co-HEMA)/PCL at this temperature. In all other platforms, drug release at 20 °C was significantly similar to that at 37 °C and was diffusion controlled. This study has uniquely described a strategy by which thermoresponsive drug release may be performed from polymeric platforms with highly elastic properties. It is proposed that these materials may be used clinically as bioactive endotracheal tubes, designed to offer enhanced resistance to ventilator associated pneumonia, a clinical condition associated with the use of endotracheal tubes where stimulus responsive drug release from biomaterials of significant mechanical properties would be advantageous. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. In this study, three different elastomers, namely hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber, fluoroelastomer and silicone, have been subjected to two different hard metallised coatings by ion implantation process. The three different elastomers are commonly used in various seal applications, where reduced wear and gas permeability are essential in maintaining seal performance and functionality. Samples of these rubbers have been coated with chromium coating in one set of tests. In the second set of tests, samples of elastomers have been coated with tungsten carbide coating being deposited on all the three different elastomers. Wear, gas permeability and mechanical behaviour of the coated samples were compared with each other and with the control uncoated elastomers. All the coated samples showed good reduction in gas permeability. With the use of metallised coatings, there has been improved resistance to wear in all the coated samples. Adhesion strength and effect of coating on the elastomer have been investigated by mechanical testing. Mechanical tests revealed good adhesion of metal coatings on all the rubber samples, and there was no detrimental effect on the mechanical properties after coating. © 2012 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely adopted to protect mechanical components in gas turbine engines operating at high temperature. Basically, the surface temperature of these components must be low enough to retain material properties within acceptable bounds and to extend component life. From this standpoint, air plasma-sprayed (APS) ceria and yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) is particularly promising because it provides enhanced thermal insulation capabilities and resistance to hot corrosion. However, essential mechanical properties, such as hardness and Young's modulus, have been less thoroughly investigated. Knowledge of Young's modulus is of concern because it has a significant effect on strain tolerance and stress level and, hence, on durability. The focus of the present study was to determine the mechanical properties of APS CYSZ coatings. In particular, X-ray diffraction (XRD) is adopted for phase analysis of powders and as-sprayed coatings. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis (IA) are employed to explore coating microstructure and porosity. Finally, the Young's modulus of the coating is determined using nanoindentation and a resonant method. The results obtained are then discussed and a cross-check on their consistency is carried out by resorting to a micromechanical model. © 2010 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Nano-scale touch screen thin film have not been thoroughly investigated in terms of dynamic impact analysis under various strain rates. This research is focused on two different thin films, Zinc Oxide (ZnO) film and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) film, deposited on Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) substrate for the standard touch screen panels. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) was performed on the ZnO film coated PET substrates. Nano-impact (fatigue) testing was performed on ITO film coated PET substrates. Other analysis includes hardness and the elastic modulus measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of the film surface.
Ten delta of DMA is described as the ratio of loss modulus (viscous properties) and storage modulus (elastic properties) of the material and its peak against time identifies the glass transition temperature (Tg). Thus, in essence the Tg recognizes changes from glassy to rubber state of the material and for our sample ZnO film, Tg was found as 388.3 K. The DMA results also showed that the Ten delta curve for Tg increases monotonically in the viscoelastic state (before Tg) and decreases sharply in the rubber state (after Tg) until recrystallization of ZnO takes place. This led to an interpretation that enhanced ductility can be achieved by negating the strength of the material.
For the nano-impact testing using the ITO coated PET, the damage started with the crack initiation and propagation. The interpretation of the nano-impact results depended on the characteristics of the loading history. Under the nano-impact loading, the surface structure of ITO film suffered from several forms of failure damages that range from deformation to catastrophic failures. It is concluded that in such type of application, the films should have low residual stress to prevent deformation, good adhesive strength, durable and good resistance to wear.
