Several studies in the past have revealed that network end user devices are left powered up 24/7 even when idle just for the sake of maintaining Internet connectivity. Network devices normally support low power states but are kept inactive due to their inability to maintain network connectivity. The Network Connectivity Proxy (NCP) has recently been proposed as an effective mechanism to impersonate network connectivity on behalf of high power devices and enable them to sleep when idle without losing network presence. The NCP can efficiently proxy basic networking protocol, however, proxying of Internet based applications have no absolute solution due to dynamic and non-predictable nature of the packets they are sending and receiving periodically. This paper proposes an approach for proxying Internet based applications and presents the basic software architectures and capabilities. Further, this paper also practically evaluates the proposed framework and analyzes expected energy savings achievable under-different realistic conditions.

EU’s deference to the Member State approaches in minority protection can intensify the oppression of
the vulnerable groups, its insistence on non-discrimination on the basis of nationality in the minority regions with special rights in place can equally produce injustice. Its inability to protect EU-wide minorities, like the Roma, is equally problematic. Although a ‘value’, minority protection functions incoherently, if at all. It is time to approach the EU as a highly specific minority protection arena not to be confused with its component parts – the Member States. The reform of the Member State-centred thinking should start at the level of approaching the core issues. It should include the assessment of such questions as what is a minority in the EU’s context of a missing majority, what is the appropriate depth of EU’s intervention in the area of minority protection, i.e. how much room for manœuvre should reasonably be left with the Member States without disrupting the effectiveness of EU’s regulation, as well as the approach to defining what a success in minority protection should be, in the
EU context. The latter should be done, in particular, with due regard to the division of competences between the EU and the Member States in this and other relevant fields. This paper briefly explores a series of diverse casestudies – from migrant EU citizens, Baltic Russians, and sexual minorities to, most importantly, Roma rights to make the first attempt to test the proposed synergetic approach.

Schistosomiasis is a chronically debilitating helminth infection with a significant socio-economic and public health impact. Accurate diagnostics play a pivotal role in achieving current schistosomiasis control and elimination goals. However, many of the current diagnostic procedures, which rely on detection of schistosome eggs, have major limitations including lack of accuracy and the inability to detect pre-patent infections. DNA-based detection methods provide a viable alternative to the current tests commonly used for schistosomiasis diagnosis. Here we describe the optimisation of a novel droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) duplex assay for the diagnosis of Schistosoma japonicum infection which provides improved detection sensitivity and specificity. The assay involves the amplification of two specific and abundant target gene sequences in S. japonicum; a retrotransposon (SjR2) and a portion of a mitochondrial gene (nad1). The assay detected target sequences in different sources of schistosome DNA isolated from adult worms, schistosomules and eggs, and exhibits a high level of specificity, thereby representing an ideal tool for the detection of low levels of parasite DNA in different clinical samples including parasite cell free DNA in the host circulation and other bodily fluids. Moreover, being quantitative, the assay can be used to determine parasite infection intensity and, could provide an important tool for the detection of low intensity infections in low prevalence schistosomiasis-endemic areas.

The p16 gene competes with cyclin D for binding to CDK4/CDK6 and therefore inhibits CDK4/6 complex kinase activity, resulting in dephosphorylation of pRb and related G1 growth arrest. Inactivation of this gene has been involved in a variety of tumors by different mechanisms: homozygous/hemyzygous deletions, point mutations and methylation of a 5' CpG island into exon E1alpha of the p16 gene. Homozygous deletions have been rarely found in multiple myeloma (MM) and no point mutations have been reported. Two recent studies have reported a high prevalence of methylation in the exon E1alpha of the p16 gene, but included only a small number of cases. We have analyzed the methylation pattern of exon E1alpha of the p16 gene in 101 untreated MM and five primary plasma cell leukemias (PCL). A PCR assay, relying on the inability of some restriction enzymes to digest methylated sequences, was used to analyze the methylation status. Southern blot analysis was used to confirm these results. Forty-one of 101 MM patients (40.5%) as well as four of the five (80%) primary PCL patients had shown methylation of the exon E1alpha. Northern Ireland has been characterised by an inability to narrow the persistent economic gap relative to Britain. Some commentators have suggested that regional Corporation Tax variation may be the “game changer” in closing this gap. This paper draws on a range of papers that help us better understand the historical and institutional context. However, the analysis of tax variation is broader than this. Consideration is given as to which taxes might be the most suitable candidates for devolution. While greater tax variations could certainly complement an emphasis on increased competitiveness aimed at improving economic outcomes, they are no substitute for such a focus. As is often the case in institutional and economic development, issues of sequencing and policy capacity are salient.

This article introduces the concept of an emerging shared austerity reality, which refers to the socio-economic context of austerity that is shared both by social workers and service users, albeit to different degrees. Traditionally, the concept of the shared reality has been utilized to encompass the experiences of welfare professionals working in situations where both they and service users are exposed to the adverse effects of a natural disaster, war or terrorist attack. Here, the concept of shared reality is expanded through the introduction of the context of austerity. Drawing on 21 in-depth interviews with public sector social work practitioners in Greece it discusses, among other things, social anxieties about their children’s future, and their inability to take care of their elderly relatives that suggest an emerging shared austerity reality, reflecting the deterioration of socio-economic conditions. The paper ends with a discussion about the possibilities of alliance and division that emerge from the concept and future research directions. Moreover, it concludes with a reflection on the role of the social work profession and recent political developments in Greece in anti-austerity struggles.

Sensitive detection of pathogens is critical to ensure the safety of food supplies and to prevent bacterial disease infection and outbreak at the first onset. While conventional techniques such as cell culture, ELISA, PCR, etc. have been used as the predominant detection workhorses, they are however limited by either time-consuming procedure, complicated sample pre-treatment, expensive analysis and operation, or inability to be implemented at point-of-care testing. Here, we present our recently developed assay exploiting enzyme-induced aggregation of plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for label-free and ultrasensitive detection of bacterial DNA. In the experiments, AuNPs are first functionalized with specific, single-stranded RNA probes so that they exhibit high stability in solution even under high electrolytic condition thus exhibiting red color. When bacterial DNA is present in a sample, a DNA-RNA heteroduplex will be formed and subsequently prone to the RNase H cleavage on the RNA probe, allowing the DNA to liberate and hybridize with another RNA strand. This continuously happens until all of the RNA strands are cleaved, leaving the nanoparticles ‘unprotected’. The addition of NaCl will cause the ‘unprotected’ nanoparticles to aggregate, initiating a colour change from red to blue. The reaction is performed in a multi-well plate format, and the distinct colour signal can be discriminated by naked eye or simple optical spectroscopy. As a result, bacterial DNA as low as pM could be unambiguously detected, suggesting that the enzyme-induced aggregation of AuNPs assay is very easy to perform and sensitive, it will significantly benefit to development of fast and ultrasensitive methods that can be used for disease detection and diagnosis.
