In an effort to develop a novel electronic paper image display technology based on the electrowetting principle, a 3-D electrowetting cell is designed and fabricated, which consists of two 3-D bent electrodes, each having a horizontal surface made of gold and a vertical surface made of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass as a color display window, a layer of dielectric material on the 3-D electrodes, and a highly fluorinated hydrophobic layer on the surface of the dielectric layer. Results of this work show that an electrowetting-induced motion of an aqueous droplet in immiscible oils can be achieved reversibly across the boundary of the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the 3-D electrode surface. It is also shown that the droplet can maintain its wetting state on a vertical sidewall electrode free of a power supplier when the voltage is removed. This phenomenon may form the basis for color contrast modulation applications, where a power-free image display is required, such as electronic paper display technology in the future. The probability of multiple ionization of krypton by 50 femtosecond circularly polarized laser pulses, independent of the optical focal geometry, has been obtained for the first time. The excellent agreement over the intensity range 100 TW cm-2 to 100 PW cm-2 with the recent predictions of Kornev et al (2003 Phys. Rev. A 68 043414) provides the first experimental confirmation that non-recollisional electronic excitation can occur in strong-field ionization. This is particularly true for higher stages of ionization, when the laser intensity exceeds 10 PW cm-2 as the energetic departure of the ionized electron(s) diabatically distorts the wavefunctions of the bound electrons. By scaling the probability of ionization by the focal volume, we discuss why this mechanism was not apparent in previous studies.

Modulations in the excitability of spinal reflex pathways during passive rhythmic movements of the lower limb have been demonstrated by a number of previous studies [4]. Less emphasis has been placed on the role of supraspinal pathways during passive movement, and on tasks involving the upper limb. In the present study, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was delivered to subjects while undergoing passive flexion-extension movements of the contralateral wrist. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) of flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and abductor pollicus brevis (APB) muscles were recorded. Stimuli were delivered in eight phases of the movement cycle during three different frequencies of movement. Evidence of marked modulations in pathway excitability was found in the MEP amplitudes of the FCR muscle, with responses inhibited and facilitated from static values in the extension and flexion phases, respectively. The results indicated that at higher frequencies of movement there was greater modulation in pathway excitability. Paired-pulse TMS (sub-threshold conditioning) at short interstimulus intervals revealed modulations in the extent of inhibition in MEP amplitude at high movement frequencies. In the APE muscle, there was some evidence of phasic modulations of response amplitude, although the effects were less marked than those observed in FCR. It is speculated that these modulatory effects are mediated via Ia afferent pathways and arise as a consequence of the induced forearm muscle shortening and lengthening. Although the level at which this input influences the corticomotoneuronal pathway is difficult to discern, a contribution from cortical regions is suggested. Avoiding the use of solvents in synthesis can reduce environmental contamination and even be more convenient than using solvent-based synthesis. In this tutorial review we focus on recent research into the use of mechanochemistry ( grinding) to synthesise metal complexes in the absence of solvent. We include synthesis of mononuclear complexes, coordination clusters, spacious coordination cages, and 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional coordination polymers ( metal organic frameworks) which can even exhibit microporosity. Remarkably, in many cases, mechanochemical synthesis is actually faster and more convenient than the original solvent-based methods. Examples of solvent-free methods other than grinding are also briefly discussed, and the positive outlook for this growing topic is emphasised.
