The immunogenicity of proteins encapsulated in poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) microspheres has not been investigated to any extent in large animal models. In this study, IgG and IgA responses to ovalbumin (OVA), encapsulated in microspheres was investigated following intranasal inoculation into calves. Scanning electron microscopy and flow cytometric analysis demonstrated a uniform microsphere population with a diameter of <2.5 micrometers. Ovalbumin was released steadily from particles stored in PBS almost in a linear fashion, and after 4 weeks many particles showed cracks and fissures in their surface structure. Following intranasal inoculation of calves with different doses of encapsulated antigen, mean levels of ovalbumin-specific IgA were observed to increase steadily but significant differences in IgA levels (from the pre-inoculation level) were only observed following a second intranasal inoculation. With 0.5 and 1.0mg doses of antigen, ovalbumin-specific IgG was also detected in serum. Ovalbumin-specific IgA persisted in nasal secretions for a considerable period of time and were still detectable in four out of seven animals, 6 months after inoculation.

A FORTRAN 90 program is presented which calculates the total cross sections, and the electron energy spectra of the singly and doubly differential cross sections for the single target ionization of neutral atoms ranging from hydrogen up to and including argon. The code is applicable for the case of both high and low Z projectile impact in fast ion-atom collisions. The theoretical models provided for the program user are based on two quantum mechanical approximations which have proved to be very successful in the study of ionization in ion-atom collisions. These are the continuum-distorted-wave (CDW) and continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state (CDW-EIS) approximations. The codes presented here extend previously published. codes for single ionization of. target hydrogen [Crothers and McCartney, Comput. Phys. Commun. 72 (1992) 288], target helium [Nesbitt, O'Rourke and Crothers, Comput. Phys. Commun. 114 (1998) 385] and target atoms ranging from lithium to neon [O'Rourke, McSherry and Crothers, Comput. Phys. Commun. 131 (2000) 129]. Cross sections for all of these target atoms may be obtained as limiting cases from the present code. This special issue provides the latest research and development on wireless mobile wearable communications. According to a report by Juniper Research, the market value of connected wearable devices is expected to reach $1.5 billion by 2014, and the shipment of wearable devices may reach 70 million by 2017. Good examples of wearable devices are the prominent Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens. As wearable technology is rapidly penetrating our daily life, mobile wearable communication is becoming a new communication paradigm. Mobile wearable device communications create new challenges compared to ordinary sensor networks and short-range communication. In mobile wearable communications, devices communicate with each other in a peer-to-peer fashion or client-server fashion and also communicate with aggregation points (e.g., smartphones, tablets, and gateway nodes). Wearable devices are expected to integrate multiple radio technologies for various applications' needs with small power consumption and low transmission delays. These devices can hence collect, interpret, transmit, and exchange data among supporting components, other wearable devices, and the Internet. Such data are not limited to people's personal biomedical information but also include human-centric social and contextual data. The success of mobile wearable technology depends on communication and networking architectures that support efficient and secure end-to-end information flows. A key design consideration of future wearable devices is the ability to ubiquitously connect to smartphones or the Internet with very low energy consumption. Radio propagation and, accordingly, channel models are also different from those in other existing wireless technologies. A huge number of connected wearable devices require novel big data processing algorithms, efficient storage solutions, cloud-assisted infrastructures, and spectrum-efficient communications technologies.

High-cadence multiwavelength optical observations were taken with the Dunn Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory, Sacramento Peak, accompanied by Advanced Stokes Polarimeter vector magnetograms. A total of 11 network bright points (NBPs) have been studied at different atmospheric heights using images taken in wave bands centered on Mg I b(1) - 0.4 Angstrom, Halpha, and Ca II K-3. Wavelet analysis was used to study wave packets and identify traveling magnetohydrodynamic waves. Wave speeds were estimated through the temporal cross-correlation of signals, in selected frequency bands of wavelet power, in each wavelength. Four mode-coupling cases were identified, one in each of four of the NBPs, and the variation of the associated Fourier power with height was studied. Three of the detected mode-coupling, transverse-mode frequencies were observed in the 1.2-1.6 mHz range (mean NBP apparent flux density magnitudes over 99-111 Mx cm(-2)), with the final case showing 2.0-2.2 mHz (with 142 Mx cm(-2)). Following this, longitudinal-mode frequencies were detected in the range 2.6-3.2 mHz for three of our cases, with 3.9-4.1 mHz for the remaining case. After mode coupling, two cases displayed a decrease in longitudinal-mode Fourier power in the higher chromosphere.

New R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates for Fe XI are used to determine theoretical emission line ratios applicable to solar and stellar coronal observations. These are subsequently compared to solar spectra of the quiet Sun and an active region made by the Solar EUV Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS-95), as well as Skylab observations of two flares. Line blending is identified, and electron densities of 10(9.3), 10(9.7), greater than or equal to 10(10.8), and greater than or equal to 10(11.3) cm(-3) are found for the quiet Sun, active region, and the two flares, respectively. Observations of the F5 IV-V star Procyon, made with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite, are compared and contrasted with the solar observations. It is confirmed that Procyon's average coronal conditions are very similar to those seen in the quiet Sun, with N-e = 10(9.4) cm(-3). In addition, although the quiet Sun is the closest solar analog to Procyon, we conclude that Procyon's coronal temperatures are slightly hotter than solar. A filling factor of 25(-12)(+38)% was derived for the corona of Procyon.

The Early Medieval period in Ireland (c. A.D. 400–1150) has been the subject of much archaeological and historical study. The recent application of various forms of archaeological sciences, as well as palaeoenvironmental studies, to the archaeological record have, however, added fresh impetus to this study area. It seems increasingly evident that significant changes to economy and society occurred during this period and were not recorded in detail in the contemporary documentary sources. This paper will attempt to outline those changes and to assess whether, or to what extent, they were influenced by climate change.

The influence of solar variability on the climate of the Lateglacial and Holocene periods has been the subject of increasing discussion during the last decade. In the Mid-Holocene, several studies have identified cold/wet events that occur at ca 2800 cal. BP and a link with a reduction in solar activity, inferred from the C-14 record, has been postulated. We present results from a multi-proxy study of peat humification, plant macrofossils and testate amoebae from a raised bog at Glen West, northwest Ireland, that indicate that dry bog surface conditions were experienced in the north of Ireland at the time of the solar anomaly starting at 2800 cal. BP. With the aid of C-14 wiggle-matching and tephrochronology, an abrupt shift to wetter conditions is dated to ca 2700 cal. BP, coinciding with a C-14 maximum but clearly post-dating the 2800 cal. BP event identified elsewhere in Europe. We explore the significance of this apparent lag in the Irish record, considering the possible role of the ocean in generating spatial and temporal complexities in the climate patterns of the North Atlantic region. We conclude that these complexities are likely to give rise to time-transgressive climate responses around the North Atlantic that will only be recognised by more critical chronological approaches.

Background: Sun exposure increases risk of skin cancer, especially melanoma, incidence of which continues to rise. Reported skin cancer knowledge and trends in sun care behaviours are documented in a UK region where there has been 20 years of sun-related health promotion campaigns. Methods: In 2000, 2004 and 2008, a 'care in the sun' module was included in the Northern Ireland (NI) Omnibus survey. Randomly selected subjects were asked to complete a sun-related questionnaire and proportions of respondents analysed by demographic and socio-economic factors, with differences tested using z-tests and the chi-squared test. Results: Around 3623 persons responded. Skin cancer knowledge was high (97). Sun avoidance decreased with time and was lowest among younger age groups and males. Sunscreen use was high (70), unchanged over 8 years, and more likely among younger age groups, females, those in paid employment, and those with tertiary level education. Use of sunscreen with minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 15 (a campaign message) increased from 45 to 70 (P
