Nanosecond time-resolved absorption (TA), resonance Raman (TR(3)), and infrared (TRIR) spectra are reported for several complexes [Ru(X)(R)(CO)(2)(alpha-diimine)] (X = Cl, Br, I; R = Me, Et; alpha-diimine = N,N'-diisopropyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (iPr-DAB), pyridine-2-carbaldehyde-N-isopropylimine (iPr-PyCa), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy)). This is the first instance in which the TA, TR(3), and TRIR techniques have been used to probe excited states in the same series of complexes. The TA spectra of the iodide complexes show a transient absorption between 550 and 700 nm, which does not depend on the solvent but shifts to lower energy in the order iPr-DAB > bpy > iPr-PyCa. This band is assigned to an intraligand transition. For the corresponding chloride and bromide complexes this band occurs at higher energy, most probably because of a change of character of the lowest excited state from XLCT to MLCT. The TRIR spectra show an increase in v(CO) (and k(CO)) on promotion to the excited state; however, the shifts Delta v(CO) show a decrease in the order Cl- > Br- > I-. The TR(3) spectra of the excited complexes [Ru(X)(R)(Co)(2)(iPr-DAB)] show v(s)(CN) of the iPr-DAB ligand 50-80 cm(-1) lower in frequency than for the complexes in their ground state. This frequency shift decreases in the order Cl- > Br- > I-, indicating a decrease of CT character of the lowest excited state in this order. However, going from X = Br to I, the effect on Delta v(CO) is much larger than the decrease of Delta v(s)(CN). This different effect on the CO- and CN-stretching frequencies is assigned to a gradual change in character of the lowest excited state from MLCT to XLCT when Cl- is replaced by Br- and I-. This result confirms a similar conclusion derived from previous resonance Raman and emission experiments on these complexes.

yambo is an ab initio code for calculating quasiparticle energies and optical properties of electronic systems within the framework of many-body perturbation theory and time-dependent density functional theory. Quasiparticle energies are calculated within the GW approximation for the self-energy. Optical properties are evaluated either by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation or by using the adiabatic local density approximation. yambo is a plane-wave code that, although particularly suited for calculations of periodic bulk systems, has been applied to a large variety of physical systems. yambo relies on efficient numerical techniques devised to treat systems with reduced dimensionality, or with a large number of degrees of freedom. The code has a user-friendly command-line based interface, flexible 110 procedures and is interfaced to several publicly available density functional ground-state codes.

The resonance Raman spectra of the lowest lying singlet (S-1) state of free-base tetraphenylporphyrin and seven of its isotopomers were recorded under pump-and-probe conditions with a time delay of -2 ns between pump and probe laser pulses, In the S-1 spectra of the isotopomers, as in the ground state, there are dramatic splittings of what appear to be single bands in the natural isotopic abundance spectrum. The most structurally significant bands of the S-1 state were assigned on the basis of the isotope data, In some cases it was necessary to curve fit unresolved bands in the excited-state spectra in order to account for observed intensity ratios and to rationalize isotope shifts, The changes in band positions on excitation to the S-1 state were compared with those from earlier studies on the T-1 state. The changes in band positions were found to be similar For both excited states. Most notable was the similar shift in nu(2), the most widely used marker band for orbital character. The data are interpreted as implying that the lowest lying singlet state is a configuration interaction admixture of b(1u)b(2g) + a(u)b(3g) configurations with the coefficients weighted heavily in favour of b(1n)b(2g), which Is the configuration of the T-1 state. The synthesis of a number of new 2,2'-bipyridine ligands, functionalized with bulky ester side groups is reported (L2 - L8). Their reaction with [Ru(DMSO)4Cl2] gives rise to tris-chelate ruthenium(II) metal complexes which show an unusually high proportion of the fac-isomer, as judged by 1H NMR following conversion to the ruthenium(II) complex of 2,2'-bipyridine-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester (L1). The initial reaction appears to have thermodynamic control with the steric bulk of the ligands causing the third ligand to be labile under the reaction conditions used, giving rise to disappointing yields and allowing rearrangement to the more stable facial form. DFT studies indicate that this does not appear to be as a consequence of a metal centered electronic effect. The two isomers of [Ru(L1)3](PF6)2 were separated into the two individual forms using silica preparative plate chromatographic procedures, and the photophysical characteristics of the two forms compared. The results appear to indicate that there is no significant difference in both their room temperature electronic absorption and emission spectra or their excited state lifetimes at 77K.

Integrated "ICT chromophore-receptor" systems show ion-induced shifts in their electronic absorption spectra. The wavelength of observation can be used to reversibly configure the system to any of the four logic operations permissible with a single input (YES, NOT, PASS 1, PASS 0), under conditions of ion input and transmittance output. We demonstrate these with dyes integrated into Tsien's calcium receptor, 1-2. Applying multiple ion inputs to 1-2 also allows us to perform two- or three-input OR or NOR operations. The weak fluorescence output of 1 also shows YES or NOT logic depending on how it is configured by excitation and emission wavelengths. Integrated "receptor(1)-ICT chromophore-receptor(2)" systems 3-5 selectively target two ions into the receptor terminals. The ion-induced transmittance output of 3-5 can also be configured via wavelength to illustrate several logic types including, most importantly, XOR. The opposite effects of the two ions on the energy of the chromophore excited state is responsible for this behaviour. INHIBIT and REVERSE IMPLICATION are two of the other logic types seen here. Integration of XOR logic with a preceding OR operation can be arranged by using three ion inputs. The fluorescence output of these systems can be configured via wavelength to display INHIBIT or NOR logic under two-input conditions. The superposition or multiplicity of logic gate configurations is an unusual consequence of the ability to simultaneously observe multiple wavelengths.

The reliable measurement of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) of plasmas is one of the most important subjects of plasma diagnostics, because this piece of information is the key to understand basic discharge mechanisms. Specific problems arise in the case of RF-excited plasmas, since the properties of electrons are subject to changes on a nanosecond time scale and show pronounced spatial anisotropy. We report on a novel spectroscopic method for phase- and space-resolved measurements of the electron energy distribution function of energetic (> 12 eV) electrons in RF discharges. These electrons dominate excitation and ionization processes and are therefore of particular interest. The technique is based on time-dependent measurements during the RF cycle of excited-state populations of rare gases admixed in small fractions. These measurements yield in combination with an analytical model detailed information on the excitation processes. Phase-resolved optical emission spectroscopy allows us to overcome the difficulties connected with the very low densities (107109 cm3) and the transient character of the electrons in the sheath region. The EEDF of electrons accelerated in the sheath region can be described by a shifted Maxwellian with a drift velocity component in direction of the electric field. The method yields the high-energy tail of the EEDF on an absolute scale. The applicability of the method is demonstrated at a capacitively coupled RF discharge in hydrogen.

Two series of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes [Ru(bipy)2(phpytr)]+ and [Ru(bipy)2(phpztr)]+ (where Hphpytr = 2-(5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine and Hphpztr = 2-(5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyrazine) are examined by electrochemistry, UV/Vis, emission, resonance Raman, transient resonance Raman and transient absorption spectroscopy, in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of their excited state electronic properties. The interpretation of the results obtained is facilitated by the availability of several isotopologues of each of the complexes examined. For the pyridine-1,2,4-triazolato based complex the lowest emissive excited state is exclusively bipy based, however, for the pyrazine based complexes excited state localisation on particular ligands shows considerable solvent and pH dependency.

The correlated process of photodetaching two electrons from the F- ion following the absorption of a single photon has been investigated over an energy range 20-62 eV. In the experiment, a beam of photons from the Advanced Light Source was collinearly merged with a counter-propagating beam of F- ions from a sputter ion source. The F+ ions produced in the interaction region were detected, and the normalized signal was used to monitor the relative cross section for the double-detachment reaction. An absolute scale for the cross section was established by measuring the spatial overlap of the two beams and by determining the efficiency for collection and detection of the F+ ions. The measured cross section is compared with R-matrix and random phase approximation calculations. These calculations show that the Auger decay of the 2s2p(6) core-excited state of the F atom plays a minor role in the production of F+ ions and that double detachment is likely to be dominated by simultaneous correlated ejection of two valence electrons at energies well above threshold.

The first report of time-resolved resonance Raman (TR(3)) scattering in a supercritical fluid is presented. TR(3) spectra of the lowest triplet excited state (T-1) of anthracene in supercritical (SC) CO2 have been obtained over the pressure range 90-500 bar. These data have been complemented by conventional flash photolysis measurements of the excited state lifetime, transient absorbance difference, and fluorescence spectra over a similar pressure range. The spectroscopic data show systematic changes with increasing pressure; the Delta A spectra of the TI state recorded at two different temperatures display a red shift with increasing fluid pressure, which is in agreement with earlier work carried out over a smaller range of pressures. Similar shifts in the fluorescence are also observed. The vibrational frequencies of the T-1 state of anthracene are found to be relatively insensitive to applied pressure; indeed, the transient bands are readily identified by comparison with resonance Raman (RR) spectra of the T-1 state in cyclohexane solution. Small but well-defined shifts to lower cm(-1) with increasing pressure are observed in some of the vibrational bands of SC COE. The most marked change in the excited state Raman spectra is that the intensity of the T-1 anthracene features, relative to those of CO2, increases with applied pressure. The information which each of the above spectroscopic methods gives on the question of how pressure changes affect the structure and local environment of the excited state probe molecule in the SCF is discussed. Possible explanations for the observed increase in RR band intensities in terms of increased resonance Raman enhancement arising from the spectral shifts and/or the increased solubility of anthracene in CO2 with increasing pressure are also considered.
