Nanoscale electromechanical activity, remanent polarization states, and hysteresis loops in paraelectric TiO2 and SrTiO3 thin films are observed using scanning probe microscopy. The coupling between the ionic dynamics and incipient ferroelectricity in these materials is analyzed using extended Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory. The possible origins of electromechanical coupling including ionic dynamics, surface-charge induced electrostriction, and ionically induced ferroelectricity are identified. For the latter, the ionic contribution can change the sign of first order LGD expansion coefficient, rendering material effectively ferroelectric. The lifetime of these ionically induced ferroelectric states is then controlled by the transport time of the mobile ionic species and well above that of polarization switching. These studies provide possible explanation for ferroelectric-like behavior in centrosymmetric transition metal oxides.

We demonstrate an approach for probing nonlinear electromechanical responses in BiFeO(3) thin film nanocapacitors using half-harmonic band excitation piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Nonlinear PFM images of nanocapacitor arrays show clearly visible clusters of capacitors associated with variations of local leakage current through the BiFeO(3) film. Strain spectroscopy measurements and finite element modeling point to significance of the Joule heating and show that the thermal effects caused by the Joule heating can provide nontrivial contributions to the nonlinear electromechanical responses in ferroic nanostructures. This approach can be further extended to unambiguous mapping of electrostatic signal contributions to PFM and related techniques.

Inkjet printing is proposed as a means to create the resistively loaded elements of a frequency selective surface (FSS) which suppresses radar backscatter when placed above a metal ground plane. Spectral transmission and reflection measurements from 9 to 18 GHz show that the dot density of the printed features and the volume ratio of an aqueous vehicle and nano-silver (Ag) ink mixture can be selected to obtain surface resistances in the range 1.2-200 Ω/sq.

This study investigates topology optimization of energy absorbing structures in which material damage is accounted for in the optimization process. The optimization objective is to design the lightest structures that are able to absorb the required mechanical energy. A structural continuity constraint check is introduced that is able to detect when no feasible load path remains in the finite element model, usually as a result of large scale fracture. This assures that designs do not fail when loaded under the conditions prescribed in the design requirements. This continuity constraint check is automated and requires no intervention from the analyst once the optimization process is initiated. Consequently, the optimization algorithm proceeds towards evolving an energy absorbing structure with the minimum structural mass that is not susceptible to global structural failure. A method is also introduced to determine when the optimization process should halt. The method identifies when the optimization method has plateaued and is no longer likely to provide improved designs if continued for further iterations. This provides the designer with a rational method to determine the necessary time to run the optimization and avoid wasting computational resources on unnecessary iterations. A case study is presented to demonstrate the use of this method.

Distributed quantum information processing (QIP) is a promising way to bypass problems due to unwanted interactions between elements. However, this strategy presupposes the engineering of protocols for remote processors. In many of them, pairwise entanglement is a key resource. We study a model which distributes entanglement among elements of a delocalized network without local control. The model is efficient both in finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. We suggest a setup of electromechanical systems to implement our proposal.

Context. The I(15.01 Å)/I(16.78 Å) emission line intensity ratio in Fe xvii has been reported to deviate from its theoretical value
in solar and stellar X-ray spectra. This is attributed to opacity in the 15.01 Å line, leading to a reduction in its intensity, and was
interpreted in terms of a geometry in which the emitters and absorbers are spatially distinct.
Aims. We study the I(15.01 Å)/I(16.78 Å) intensity ratio for the active cool dwarf EV Lac, in both flare and quiescent spectra.
Methods. The observations were obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on the XMM-Newton satellite. The emission
measure distribution versus temperature reconstruction technique is used for our analysis.
Results. We find that the 15.01 Å line exhibits a significant enhancement in intensity over the optically thin value. To our knowledge,
this is the first time that such an enhancement has been detected on such a sound statistical basis. We interpret this enhancement
in terms of a geometry in which the emitters and absorbers are not spatially distinct, and where the geometry is such that resonant
pumping of the upper level has a greater effect on the observed line intensity than resonant absorption in the line-of-sight.

The ability to detect harmful algal bloom (HAB) species and their toxins in real- or near real-time is a critical need for researchers studying HAB/toxin dynamics, as well as for coastal resource managers charged with monitoring bloom populations in order to mitigate their wide ranging impacts. The Environmental Sample Processor (ESP), a robotic electromechanical/fluidic system, was developed for the autonomous, subsurface application of molecular diagnostic tests and has successfully detected several HAB species using DNA probe arrays during field deployments. Since toxin production and thus the potential for public health and ecosystem effects varies considerably in natural phytoplankton populations, the concurrent detection of HAB species and their toxins onboard the ESP is essential. We describe herein the development of methods for extracting the algal toxin domoic acid (DA) from Pseudonitzschia cells (extraction efficiency >90%) and testing of samples using a competitive ELISA onboard the ESP. The assay detection limit is in the low ng/mL range (in extract), which corresponds to low ng/L levels of DA in seawater for a 0.5 L sample volume acquired by the ESP. We also report the first in situ detection of both a HAB organism (i.e., Pseudo-nitzschia) and its toxin, domoic acid, via the sequential (within 2-3 h) conduct of species- and toxin-specific assays during ESP deployments in Monterey Bay, CA, USA. Efforts are now underway to further refine the assay and conduct additional calibration exercises with the aim of obtaining more reliable, accurate estimates of bloom toxicity and thus their potential impacts. Bilayered Pb(Zr((1-x)),Ti(x))O(3) ferroelectric thin film heterostructures show complex ferroelastic nanodomain patterns. These ferroelastic nanodomains exist only in the upper layer, and hence are able to move under the application of an external electric field. Quantitative analysis reveals an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient of similar to 220 pm V(-1), rendering them attractive for a variety of electromechanical devices.
