Quartz crystal impedance analysis has been developed as a technique to assess whether room-temperature ionic liquids are Newtonian fluids and as a small-volume method for determining the values of their viscosity-density product, rho eta. Changes in the impedance spectrum of a 5-MHz fundamental frequency quartz crystal induced by a water-miscible room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium. trifluoromethylsulfonate ([C(4)mim][OTf]), were measured. From coupled frequency shift and bandwidth changes as the concentration was varied from 0 to 100% ionic liquid, it was determined that this liquid provided a Newtonian response. A second water-immiscible ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C(4)mim][NTf2], with concentration varied using methanol, was tested and also found to provide a Newtonian response. In both cases, the values of the square root of the viscosity-density product deduced from the small-volume quartz crystal technique were consistent with those measured using a viscometer and density meter. The third harmonic of the crystal was found to provide the closest agreement between the two measurement methods; the pure ionic liquids had the largest difference of similar to 10%. In addition, 18 pure ionic liquids were tested, and for 11 of these, good-quality frequency shift and bandwidth data were obtained; these 12 all had a Newtonian response. The frequency shift of the third harmonic was found to vary linearly with square root of viscosity-density product of the pure ionic liquids up to a value of root(rho eta) approximate to 18 kg m(-2) s(-1/2), but with a slope 10% smaller than that predicted by the Kanazawa and Gordon equation. It is envisaged that the quartz crystal technique could be used in a high-throughput microfluidic system for characterizing ionic liquids.

The radiation efficiency and resonance frequency of five compact antennas worn by nine individual test subjects was measured at 2.45 GHz in a reverberation chamber. The results show that, despite significant differences in body mass, wearable antenna radiation efficiency had a standard deviation less than 0.6 dB and the resonance frequency shift was less than 1% between test subjects. Variability in the radiation efficiency and resonance frequency shift between antennas was largely dependant on body tissue coupling which is related to both antenna geometry and radiation characteristics. The reverberation chamber measurements were validated using a synthetic tissue phantom and compared with results obtained in a spherical near field chamber and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation.

An analytical and numerical investigation is presented of the behavior of a linearly polarized electromagnetic pulse as it propagates through a plasma. Considering a weakly relativistic regime, the system of one-dimensional fluid-Maxwell equations is reduced to a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger type equation, which is solved numerically using a split step Fourier method. The spatio-temporal evolution of an electromagnetic pulse is investigated. The evolution of the envelope amplitude of density harmonics is also studied. An electromagnetic pulse propagating through the plasma tends to broaden due to dispersion, while the nonlinear frequency shift is observed to slow down the pulse at a speed lower than the group velocity. Such nonlinear effects are more important for higher density plasmas. The pulse broadening factor is calculated numerically, and is shown to be related to the background plasma density. In particular, the broadening effect appears to be stronger for dense plasmas. The relation to existing results on electromagnetic pulses in laser plasmas is discussed. Nanosecond time-resolved absorption (TA), resonance Raman (TR(3)), and infrared (TRIR) spectra are reported for several complexes [Ru(X)(R)(CO)(2)(alpha-diimine)] (X = Cl, Br, I; R = Me, Et; alpha-diimine = N,N'-diisopropyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (iPr-DAB), pyridine-2-carbaldehyde-N-isopropylimine (iPr-PyCa), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy)). This is the first instance in which the TA, TR(3), and TRIR techniques have been used to probe excited states in the same series of complexes. The TA spectra of the iodide complexes show a transient absorption between 550 and 700 nm, which does not depend on the solvent but shifts to lower energy in the order iPr-DAB > bpy > iPr-PyCa. This band is assigned to an intraligand transition. For the corresponding chloride and bromide complexes this band occurs at higher energy, most probably because of a change of character of the lowest excited state from XLCT to MLCT. The TRIR spectra show an increase in v(CO) (and k(CO)) on promotion to the excited state; however, the shifts Delta v(CO) show a decrease in the order Cl- > Br- > I-. The TR(3) spectra of the excited complexes [Ru(X)(R)(Co)(2)(iPr-DAB)] show v(s)(CN) of the iPr-DAB ligand 50-80 cm(-1) lower in frequency than for the complexes in their ground state. This frequency shift decreases in the order Cl- > Br- > I-, indicating a decrease of CT character of the lowest excited state in this order. However, going from X = Br to I, the effect on Delta v(CO) is much larger than the decrease of Delta v(s)(CN). This different effect on the CO- and CN-stretching frequencies is assigned to a gradual change in character of the lowest excited state from MLCT to XLCT when Cl- is replaced by Br- and I-. This result confirms a similar conclusion derived from previous resonance Raman and emission experiments on these complexes.

We present a scheme to strongly enhance the readout sensitivity of the squared displacement of a mobile scatterer placed in a Fabry-Pérot cavity. We investigate the largely unexplored regime of cavity electrodynamics in which a highly reflective element positioned between the end mirrors of a symmetric Fabry-Pérot resonator strongly modifies the cavity response function, such that two longitudinal modes with different spatial parity are brought close to frequency degeneracy and interfere in the cavity output field. In the case of a movable middle reflector we show that the interference in this generic "optical coalescence" phenomenon gives rise to an enhanced frequency shift of the peaks of the cavity transmission that can be exploited in optomechanics. © 2013 American Physical Society.

A frequency selective surface (FSS) which exploits the dielectric anisotropy of liquid crystals to generate an electronically tunable bandpass filter response at D Band (110-170 GHz) is presented. The device consists of two printed arrays of slot elements which are separated by a 130-mu m thick layer of liquid crystals. A 3% shift in the filter passband occurs when the substrate permittivity is increased by applying a control signal of 10 V. Measured results show that the insertion loss increases from -3.7 dB to -10.4 dB at resonance (134 GHz), thus demonstrating the potential to create a FSS which can be switched between a transmitting and a reflecting structure.

A pin diode-loaded active doubly periodic flat strip FSS is shown to act as a dynamic screen. It is shown that by means of d.c. bias control, we can utilize the screen in, (1) transmission mode as a dual band electromagnetic shutter, or with the inclusion of a ground plane in reflection mode, (is (2) it dual band refection canceller. (3) an amplitude shift keying (ASK) spatial modulator. The properties of the FSS are characterized using a specially designed parallel plate waveguide simulator that permits normal incidence excitation of the FSS under test. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. We assessed whether quantitative analysis of Doppler flow velocity waveforms is able to identify subclinical microvascular abnormalities in SLE and whether eigenvector analysis can detect changes not detectable using the resistive index (RI). Fifty-four SLE patients with no conventional cardiovascular risk factors, major organ involvement or retinopathy were compared to 32 controls. Flow velocity waveforms were obtained from the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA) and common carotid artery (CA). The waveforms were analysed using eigenvector decomposition and compared between groups at each arterial site. The RI was also determined. The RI was comparable between groups. In the OA and CRA, there were significant differences in the lower frequency sinusoidal components (P <0.05 for each component). No differences were apparent in the CA between groups. Eigenvector analysis of Doppler flow waveforms, recorded in proximity of the terminal vascular bed, identified altered ocular microvascular haemodynamics in SLE. Altered waveform structure could not be identified by changes in RI, the traditional measure of downstream vascular resistance. This analytical approach to waveform analysis is more sensitive in detecting preclinical microvascular abnormalities in SLE. It may hold potential as a useful tool for assessing disease activity, response to treatment, and predicting future vascular complications.

Previous studies using low frequency (1 Hz) rTMS over the motor and premotor cortex have examined repetitive movements, but focused either on motor aspects of performance such as movement speed, or on variability of the produced intervals. A novel question is whether TMS affects the synchronization of repetitive movements with an external cue (sensorimotor synchronization). In the present study participants synchronized finger taps with the tones of an auditory metronome. The aim of the study was to examine whether motor and premotor cortical inhibition induced by rTMS affects timing aspects of synchronization performance such as the coupling between the tap and the tone and error correction after a metronome perturbation. Metronome sequences included perturbations corresponding to a change in the duration of a single interval (phase shifts) that were either small and below the threshold for conscious perception (10 ms) or large and perceivable (50 ms). Both premotor and motor cortex stimulation induced inhibition, as reflected in a lengthening of the silent period. Neither motor nor premotor cortex rTMS altered error correction after a phase shift. However, motor cortex stimulation made participants tap closer to the tone, yielding a decrease in tap-tone asynchrony. This provides the first neurophysiological demonstration of a dissociation between error correction and tap-tone asynchrony in sensorimotor synchronization. We discuss the results in terms of current theories of timing and error correction.

Using density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic analyses, a new carboxyl mechanism for the water-gas-shift reaction (WGSR) on Au/CeO2(111) is proposed. Many elementary steps in the WGSR are studied using an Au cluster supported on CeO2(111). It is found that (i) water can readily dissociate at the interface between Au and CeO2; (ii) CO2 can be produced via two steps: adsorbed CO on the Au cluster reacts with active OH on ceria to form the carboxyl (COOH) species and then COOH reacts with OH to release CO2; and (iii) two adsorbed H atoms recombine to form molecular H-2 on the Au cluster. Our kinetic analyses show that the turnover frequency of the carboxyl mechanism is consistent with the experimental one while the rates of redox and formate mechanisms are much slower than that of carboxyl mechanism. It is suggested that the carboxyl pathway is likely to be responsible for WGSR on Au/CeO2.

The design is described of a double layer frequency selective surface which can produce a differential phase shift of 180 ° as the wave propagates through it at normal incidence. The hand of an applied circularly polarized signal is reversed due to the 180° phase shift, and it is demonstrated that the exit circularly polarized output signal can be phase advanced or phase retarded by 180 ° upon rotation of the elements comprising the structure. This feature allows the surface to act as a spatial phase shifter. In this paper the beam steering capabilities of a 10 × 10 array of such elements are demonstrated. Here the individual elements comprising the array are rotated relative to each other in order to generate a progressive phase shift. At normal incidence the 3 dB Axial Ratio Bandwidth for LHCP to RHCP conversion is 5.3% and the insertion loss was found to be -2.3 dB, with minimum axial ratio of 0.05 dB. This array is shown to be able to steer a beam from -40 ° to +40 ° while holding axial ratio at the pointing angle to below 4 dB. The measured radiation patterns match the theoretical calculation and full-wave simulation results. © 2010 IEEE.

A study is performed to examine the distribution and frequency of 25S rRNA intron genotypes of Candida albicans isolated from different anatomical sites of patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Germ-tube positive Candida isolates (n=65) from 65 patients are included and isolates are characterised by 25S intron genotyping, whereby all can be subdivided into four genotypes (A-D). Results demonstrated that there were no significant differences between the frequency and genotype distribution of the Candida isolates and the anatomical site of colonisation. Furthermore, analysis of the transposable intron region in the 25S rRNA gene demonstrated equal distribution, regardless of age and anatomical site of isolation (groin, throat, etc.). Therefore, there does not appear to be any selective pressure associated with any anatomical site, resulting in an ecological shift in the frequency of genotypes present. This suggests that C. albicans intron genotypes equally colonise those sites of the body examined in this study. Although such an ecological finding as this is interesting, it perpetuates the continued need to find a genotypic typing scheme that helps to identify the source (nosocomial or endogenous) and mode of entry of C. albicans into patients in the ICU setting, resulting in C. albicans bloodstream infection.

The aim of this study was to compare time-domain waveform analysis of second-trimester uterine artery Doppler using the resistance index (RI) with waveform analysis using a mathematical tool known as wavelet transform for the prediction of pre-eclampsia (PE). This was a retrospective, nested case-cohort study of 336 women, 37 of whom subsequently developed PE. Uterine artery Doppler waveforms were analysed using both RI and waveform analysis. The utility of these indices in screening for PE was then evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves. There were significant differences in uterine artery RI between the PE women and those with normal pregnancy outcome. After wavelet analysis, significant difference in the mean amplitude in wavelet frequency band 4 was noted between the 2 groups. The sensitivity for both Doppler RI and frequency band 4 for the detection of PE at a 10% false-positive rate was 45%. This small study demonstrates the application of wavelet transform analysis of uterine artery Doppler waveforms in screening for PE. Further prospective studies are needed in order to clearly define if this analytical approach to waveform analysis may have the potential to improve the detection of PE by uterine artery Doppler screening.

Reflecting light from a mirror moving close to the speed of light has been envisioned as a route towards producing bright X-ray pulses since Einstein's seminal work on special relativity. For an ideal relativistic mirror, the peak power of the reflected radiation can substantially exceed that of the incident radiation due to the increase in photon energy and accompanying temporal compression. Here we demonstrate for the first time that dense relativistic electron mirrors can be created from the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with a freestanding, nanometre-scale thin foil. The mirror structures are shown to shift the frequency of a counter-propagating laser pulse coherently from the infrared to the extreme ultraviolet with an efficiency >10 4 times higher than in the case of incoherent scattering. Our results elucidate the reflection process of laser-generated electron mirrors and give clear guidance for future developments of a relativistic mirror structure.
