We present a study on the transport properties through conductivity (s), viscosity (?), and self-diffusion coefficient (D) measurements of two pure protic ionic liquids—pyrrolidinium hydrogen sulfate, [Pyrr][HSO4], and pyrrolidinium trifluoroacetate, [Pyrr][CF3COO]—and their mixtures with water over the whole composition range at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. Based on these experimental results, transport mobilities of ions have been then investigated in each case through the Stokes–Einstein equation. From this, the proton conduction in these PILs follows a combination of Grotthuss and vehicle-type mechanisms, which depends also on the water composition in solution. In each case, the displacement of the NMR peak attributed to the labile proton on the pyrrolidinium cation with the PILs concentration in aqueous solution indicates that this proton is located between the cation and the anion for a water weight fraction lower than 8%. In other words, for such compositions, it appears that this labile proton is not solvated by water molecules. However, for higher water content, the labile protons are in solution as H3O+. This water weight fraction appears to be the solvation limit of the H+ ions by water molecules in these two PILs solutions. However, [Pyrr][HSO4] and [Pyrr][CF3COO] PILs present opposed comportment in aqueous solution. In the case of [Pyrr][CF3COO], ?, s, D, and the attractive potential, Epot, between ions indicate clearly that the diffusion of each ion is similar. In other words, these ions are tightly bound together as ion pairs, reflecting in fact the importance of the hydrophobicity of the trifluoroacetate anion, whereas, in the case of the [Pyrr][HSO4], the strong H-bond between the HSO4– anion and water promotes a drastic change in the viscosity of the aqueous solution, as well as on the conductivity which is up to 187 mS·cm–1 for water weight fraction close to 60% at 298 K.

We present in this work a comparative study on density and transport properties, such as the conductivity (sigma), viscosity (eta) and self-diffusion coefficients (D), for electrolytes based on the lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6; or on the lithium tris(pentafluoroethane)-trifluorophosphate, LiFAP dissolved in a binary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethylcarbonate (DMC) (50:50 wt%). For each electrolyte, the temperature dependence on transport properties over a temperature range from 10 to 80 degrees C and 20 to 70 degrees C for viscosity and conductivity, respectively, exhibits a non-Arrhenius behavior. However, this dependence is correctly correlated by using the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) type fitting equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy and ideal glass transition temperature were then extracted. The self-diffusion coefficients (D) of the Li+ cation and PF6- or FAP(-) anions species, in each studied electrolyte, were then independently determined by observing Li-3, F-19 and P-31 nuclei with the pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR technique over the same temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. Results show that even if the diffusion of the lithium cation is quite similar in both electrolytes, the anions diffusion differs notably. In the case of the LiPF6-based electrolyte, for example at T approximate to 75 degrees C (high temperature), the self-diffusion coefficients of Li+ cations in solution (D (Li+)approximate to 5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)) is 1.6 times smaller than that of PF6- anions (D (PF6-) = 8.5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)), whereas in the case of the LiFAP-based electrolyte, FAP(-) anions diffuse at same rate as the Li+ cations (D (FAP(-)) = 5 x 10(-1) m(2) s(-1)). Based on these experimental results, the transport mobility of ions were then investigated through Stokes-Einstein and Nernst-Einstein equations to determine the transport number of lithium t(Li)(+), effective radius of solvated Li+ and of PF6- and FAP(-) anions, and the degree of dissociation of these lithium salts in the selected EC/DMC (50:50 wt%) mixture over a the temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. This study demonstrates the conflicting nature of the requirements and the advantage of the well-balanced properties as ionic mobility and dissociation constant of the selected electrolytes. Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) is a well-known lead-free piezoelectric material with potential to replace lead zirconate titanate (PZT),1 however high leakage conductivity for the material has been widely reported.2 Through a combination of Impedance Spectroscopy (IS), O2- ion transference (EMF) number experiments and O18 tracer diffusion measurements, combined with Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOFSIMS), it was identified that this leakage conductivity was due to oxygen ion conductivity. The volatilization of bismuth during synthesis, causing oxygen vacancies, is believed to be responsible for the leakage conductivity.3 The oxide-ion conductivity, when doped with magnesium, exceeds that of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) at ~500 °C,3 making it a potential electrolyte material for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Cells (ITSOCs). Figure 1 shows the comparison of bulk oxide ion conductivity between 2 at.% Mg-doped NBT and other known oxide ion conductors.

As part of the UK wide £5.7m 4CU project, research has concentrated on trying to develop NBT for use in Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Cells (ITSOCS). With the aim of achieving mixed ionic and electronic conduction, transition metals were chemically doped on to the Ti-site. A range of experimental techniques was used to characterize the materials aimed at investigating both conductivity and material structure (Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), IS, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS)). The potential for NBT as an ITSOC material, as well as the challenges of developing the material, will be discussed.

Measurements on the diffusion coefficient of the neutral molecule N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine and the radical cation and dication generated by its one- and two-electron oxidation, respectively, are reported over the range 298-348 K in both acetonitrile and four room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Data were collected using single and double potential step chronamperometry at a gold disk electrode of micrometer dimension, and analysed via fitting to the appropriate analytical expression or, where necessary, to simulation. The variation of diffusion coefficient with temperature was found to occur in an Arrhenius-type manner for all combinations of solute and solvent. For a given ionic liquid, the diffusional activation energies of each species were not only closely equivalent to each other, but also to the RTIL's activation energy of viscous flow. In acetonitrile supported with 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate, the ratio in diffusion coefficients of the radial cation and dication tot he neutral molecule were calculated as 0.89 +/- 0.05 and 0.51 +/- 0.03, respectively. In contrast, amongst the ionic liquids the same ratios were determined to be on average 0.53 +/- 0.04 and 0.33 +/- 0.03. The consequences of this dissimilarity are considered in terms of the modelling of voltammetric data gathered within ionic liquid solvents.

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen in two different room-temperature ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][N(Tf)(2)]) and hexyltriethylammonium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide ([N-6222][N(Tf)(2)]) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry at a gold microdisk electrode. Chronoamperometric measurements were made to determine the diffusion coefficient, D, and concentration, c, of the electroactive oxygen dissolved in the ionic liquid by fitting experimental transients to the Aoki model. [Aoki, K.; et al. J. Electroanal. Chem. 1981, 122, 19]. A theory and simulation designed for cyclic voltammetry at microdisk electrodes was then employed to determine the diffusion coefficient of the electrogenerated superoxide species, O-2(.-), as well as compute theoretical voltammograms to confirm the values of D and c for neutral oxygen obtained from the transients. As expected, the diffusion coefficient of the superoxide species was found to be smaller than that of the oxygen in both ionic liquids. The diffusion coefficients of O-2 and O-2(.-) in [N-6222][N(Tf)(2)], however, differ by more than a factor of 30 (D-O2 = 1.48 x 10(-10) m(2) s(-1), DO2.- = 4.66 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1)), whereas they fall within the same order of magnitude in [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)] (D-O2 = 7.3 x 10(-10) m(2) s(-1), DO2.- = 2.7 x 10(-10) m(2) s(-1)). This difference in [N-6222][N(Tf)(2)] causes pronounced asymmetry in the concentration distributions of oxygen and superoxide, resulting in significant differences in the heights of the forward and back peaks in the cyclic voltammograms for the reduction of oxygen. This observation is most likely a result of the higher viscosity of [N-6222][N(Tf)(2)] in comparison to [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)], due to the structural differences in cationic component.

This work explores the effects of argon and nitrogen, two electrochemically and chemically inert gases frequently used in sample preparation of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) solutions, on the eelectrochemical characterization of ferrocene (Fc) dissolved in the RTIL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]). Remarkably, chronoamperometrically determined diffusion coefficients of Fc in [C(2)mim][NTf2] are found to increase from 4.8 (+/- 0.2) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) under vacuum conditions to 6.6 (+/- 0.5) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) in an atmosphere of 1 atm Ar. In contrast, exposing a vacuum-purified sample to an atmosphere of 1 atm N-2 resulted in no significant change in the measured diffusion coefficient of Fc. The effect of dissolved argon on diffusion transport is unexpected and has implications in electrochemistry and elsewhere. Fc was found to volatilize under vacuum conditions. We propose, however, that evacuation of the cell by vacuum prior to electrochemical measurements being carried out is the only way to ensure that no contamination of the sample occurs, and use of an in situ method of determining the diffusion coefficient and concentration of Fc dispells, any ambiguity associated with Fc depletion by vacuum.

The application of electric bias across tip–surface junctions in scanning probe microscopy can readily induce surface and bulk electrochemical processes that can be further detected though changes in surface topography, Faradaic or conductive currents, or electromechanical strain responses. However, the basic factors controlling tip-induced electrochemical processes, including the relationship between applied tip bias and the thermodynamics of local processes, remains largely unexplored. Using the model Li-ion reduction reaction on the surface in Li-ion conducting glass ceramic, we explore the factors controlling Li-metal formation and find surprisingly strong effects of atmosphere and back electrode composition on the process. We find that reaction processes are highly dependent on the nature of the counter electrode and environmental conditions. Using a nondepleting Li counter electrode, Li particles could grow significantly larger and faster than a depleting counter electrode. Significant Li ion depletion leads to the inability for further Li reduction. Time studies suggest that Li diffusion replenishes the vacant sites after 12 h. These studies suggest the feasibility of SPM-based quantitative electrochemical studies under proper environmental controls, extending the concepts of ultramicroelectrodes to the single-digit nanometer scale.

The current study monitors both the short- and long-term hydration characteristics of concrete using discretized conductivity measurements from initial gauging, through setting and hardening, the latter comprising both the curing and post-curing periods. In particular, attention is directed to the near-surface concrete as it is this zone which protects the steel from the external environment and has a major influence on durability, performance and service-life. A wide range of concrete mixes is studied comprising both plain Portland cement concretes and concretes containing fly-ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. The parameter normalised conductivity was used to identify four distinct stages in the hydration process and highlight the influence of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) on hydration and hydration kinetics. A relationship has been presented to account for the temporal decrease in conductivity, post 10-days hydration. The testing procedure and methodology presented lend itself to in-situ monitoring of reinforced concrete structures. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We propose a realistic scheme for measuring the micromaser linewidth by monitoring the phase diffusion dynamics of the cavity field. Our strategy consists of exciting an initial coherent state with the same photon number distribution as the micromaser steady-state field, singling out a purely diffusive process in the system dynamics. After the injection of a counterfield, measurements of the population statistics of a probe atom allow us to derive the micromaser linewidth in all ranges of the relevant parameters, establishing experimentally the distinctive features of the micromaser spectrum due to the discreteness of the electromagnetic field.

Beta-type Ti-alloy is a promising biomedical implant material as it has a low Young’s modulus and is also known to have inferior surface hardness. Various surface treatments can be applied to enhance the surface hardness. Physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition are two examples of this but these techniques have limitations such as poor interfacial adhesion and high distortion. Laser surface treatment is a relatively new surface modification method to enhance the surface hardness but its application is still not accepted by the industry. The major problem of this process involves surface melting which results in higher surface roughness after the laser surface treatment. This paper will report the results achieved by a 100 W continuous wave (CW) fiber laser for laser surface treatment without the surface being melted. Laser processing parameters were carefully selected so that the surface could be treated without surface melting and thus the surface finish of the component could be maintained. The surface and microstructural characteristics of the treated samples were examined using x-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, three-dimensional surface profile and contact angle measurements, and nanoindentation test.

ABSTRACT

One of the binder systems with low environmental footprint is alkali activated slag concretes (AASC), made by adding alkalis such as sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate to industrial by-products such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). Whilst they have the similar behaviour as that of traditional cement systems in terms of strength and structural behaviour, AASC do exhibit superior performance in terms of abrasion and acid resistance and fire protection.
In this article, the authors focus their attention on chloride ingress into different grades of AASC. The mix variables in AASC included water-to-binder, binder to aggregate ratio, percentage of alkali and the SiO2/Na2O ratio (silica modulus, Ms). The first challenge is to get mixes for different range of workability (with slump values from 40mm to 240mm) and reasonable early age and long term compressive strength according to each one. Then the chloride diffusion and migration in those mixes were measured and compared with same normal concretes in the existed literature based on chloride penetration depth. Comparing the chloride ingress between tradition concretes and AASCs is worthwhile to prove the possibility of increasing concrete lifetime in proximity to sea and deciding while such concretes are practical for use. Findings show that compared to the PC concretes, the AAS concretes have lower rate of chloride ingress.
