This paper describes an implementation of the popular method of Class-Shape Transformation for aerofoil design within SU2 software framework. To exploit the adjoint based methods for aerodynamic optimisation within the SU2, a formulation to obtain geometric sensitivities from the new parameterisation is introduced, enabling the calculation of gradients with respect to new design variables. To assess the accuracy and efficiency of the alternative approach, two transonic optimisation problems are investigated: an inviscid problem with multiple constraints and a viscous problems without any constraints. Results show the new parameterisation obtaining reliable optimums, with similar levels of
performance of the software native parameterisations.

The paper outlines the effects of polymer conditioning on alum sludge properties, such as floc size, density, fractal dimension (DF) and rheological properties. Experimental results demonstrate that polymer conditioning of alum sludge leads to: larger floc size with a plateau reached in higher doses; higher densities associated with higher doses; increased degree of compactness; and an initial decrease followed by an increase of supernatant viscosity with continued increase in polymer dose. The secondary focus of this paper dwells on a comparison of the estimates of optimum dose using different criteria that emanate from established dewatering tests such as CST, SRF, liquid phase viscosity and modified SRF as well as a simple settlement test in terms of CML30. Alum sludge was derived from a water works treating coloured, low-turbidity raw waters.

This article presents a cascaded arrangement comprising a double-layer frequency selective surface circularly polarizing (CPFSS) and a second screen that can be switched between artificial magnetic conduction (AMC) or perfect electric conducting. (PEC) states. The CPFSS consists of two stacked aluminium sheets patterned with periodic split ring structures While the AMC is a PCB sheet patterned with metallic squares interconnected by links By either open or short circuiting these links it is shown that the cascade of screens can be made to twist, or not to twist, an incident 45 degrees linearly polirized signal through 90 degrees upon reflection from the assembly The system was designed and optimized using CST software and predictions were validated experimentally and measured monostatic reflection loss results (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52 577-580, 2010. A single layer, frequency selective surface based, sub-millimeter wave transmission polarizer is presented that converts incident slant linear 45° polarization into circular polarization upon transmission. The polarization convertor consists of a 30 mm diameter 10 thick silicon reinforced metalized screen containing 2700 resonator cells and perforated with nested split ring slot apertures. The screen was designed and optimized using CST Microwave Studio and predictions were validated experimentally by transmission measurements over the 250-365 GHz frequency range. This frequency range is used for remote environmental monitoring and 325 GHz represents a molecular emission line for H2O. The results obtained show good agreement between measured and modeled predictions. The measured 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth was 11.75%, measured minimum Axial Ratio was 0.19 dB and the measured insertion loss of the single layer screen was 3.38 dB

A new design method that greatly enhances the reflectivity bandwidth and angular stability beyond what is possible with a simple Salisbury screen is described. The performance improvement is obtained from a frequency selective surface (FSS) which is sandwiched between the outermost 377 Ω/square resistive sheet and the ground plane. This is designed to generate additional reflection nulls at two predetermined frequencies by selecting the size of the two unequal length printed dipoles in each unit cell. A multiband Salisbury screen is realised by adjusting the reflection phase of the FSS to position one null above and the other below the inherent absorption band of the structure. Alternatively by incorporating resistive elements midway on the dipoles, it is shown that the three absorption bands can be merged to create a structure with a −10 dB reflectivity bandwidth which is 52% larger and relatively insensitive to incident angle compared to a classical Salisbury screen having the same thickness. CST Microwave Studio was used to optimise the reflectivity performance and simulate the radar backscatter from the structure. The numerical results are shown to be in close agreement with bistatic measurements for incident angles up to 40° over the frequency range 5.4−18 GHz.

A fast and accurate analysis and synthesis technique for high-gain sub-wavelength 2-D Fabry-Perot leaky-wave antennas (LWA) consisting of two periodic metallodielectric arrays over a ground plane is presented. Full-wave method of moments (MoM) together with reciprocity is employed for the estimation of the near fields upon plane wave illumination and the extraction of the radiation patterns of the LWA. This yields a fast and rigorous tool for the characterisation of this type of antennas. A thorough convergence study for different antenna designs is presented and the operation principles of these antennas as well as the radiation characteristics are discussed. Moreover, design guidelines to tailor the antenna profile, the dimensions of the arrays as well as the antenna directivity and bandwidth are provided. A study on the radiation efficiency for antennas with different profiles is also presented and the trade off between directivity and radiation bandwidth is discussed. Numerical examples are given throughout to demonstrate the technique. A finite size antenna model is simulated using commercial software (CST Microstripes 2009) which validates the technique.

In this paper, the design constraints that are required for a Rotman lens to realize discrete Fourier transform (DFT) amplitude and phase functionality are derived. A Fourier Rotman lens has been designed, fabricated and validated. The amplitude and phase response and the array pattern based on the CST™ results are validated with the theoretical DFT results. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first Fourier Rotman lens to be fabricated and validated. The solution provided replaces multilayer Butler matrix solutions with a simple single layer microstrip technology.

The technological constraints of early British television encouraged drama productions which emphasised the immediate, the enclosed and the close-up, an approach which Jason Jacobs described in the title of his seminal study as 'the intimate screen'. While Jacobs' book showed that this conception of early British television drama was only part of the reality, he did not focus on the role that special effects played in expanding the scope of the early television screen. This article will focus upon this role, showing that special effects were not only of use in expanding the temporal and spatial scope of television, but were also considered to be of interest to the audience as a way of exploring the new medium, receiving coverage in the popular press. These effects included pre-recorded film inserts, pre-recorded narration, multiple sets, model work and animation, combined with the live studio performances. Drawing upon archival research into television production files and scripts as well as audience responses and periodical coverage of television at the time of broadcast, this article will focus on telefantasy. This genre offered particular opportunities for utilising effects in ways that seemed appropriate for the experimentation with the form of television and for the drama narratives. This period also saw a variety of shifts within television as the BBC sought to determine a specific identity and understand the possibilities for the new medium.
This research also incorporates the BBC's own research and internal dialogue concerning audiences and how their tastes should best be met, at a time when the television audience was not only growing in terms of number but was also expanding geographically and socially beyond the moneyed Londoners who could afford the first television sets and were within range of the Alexandra Palace transmissions. The primary case study for this article will be the 1949 production of H.G.Wells’ The Time Machine, which incorporated pre-recorded audio and film inserts, which expanded the narrative out of the live studio performance both temporally and spatially, with the effects work receiving coverage in the popular magazine Illustrated. Other productions considered will be the 1938 and 1948 productions of RUR, the 1948 production of Blithe Spirit, and the 1950 adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Despite the focus on telefantasy, this article will also include examples from other genres, both dramatic and factual, showing how the BBC's response to the changing television audience was to restrict drama to a more 'realistic' aesthetic and to move experimentation with televisual form to non-drama productions such as variety performances.

Liquid coordination complexes (LCCs) are a new class of liquid Lewis acids, prepared by combining an excess of a metal halide (e.g. GaCl3) with a basic donor molecule (e.g. amides, amines or phosphines). LCCs were used to catalyse oligomerisation of 1-decene to polyalphaolefins (PAOs). Molecular weight distribution and physical properties of the produced oils were compliant with those required for low viscosity synthetic (Group IV) lubricant base oils. Kinematic viscosities at 100 °C of ca. 4 or 6 cSt were obtained, along with viscosity indexes above 120 and pour points below −57 °C. In industry, to achieve similar properties, BF3 gas is used as a catalyst. LCCs are proposed as a safer and economically attractive alternative to BF3 gas for the production of polyalphaolefins.

A 94 GHz waveguide Rotman lens is described which can be used to implement an amplitude comparison monopulse RADAR. In transmit mode, adjacent dual beam ports are excited with equal amplitude and phase to form a sum radiation pattern, and in receive mode, the outputs of the beam port pairs are combined using magic tees to provide a sum and a difference signal which can be used to calculate an angular error estimate for target acquisition and tracking. This approach provides an amplitude comparison monopulse system which can be scanned in azimuth and which has a low component count, with no requirement for phase shift circuitry in the array feed lines, making it suitable for mm-wave frequencies. A 12 input (beam ports), 12 output (array ports) lens is designed using CST Microwave Studio, and the predicted results are presented.
