In this paper we demonstrate a simple and novel illumination model that can be used for illumination invariant facial recognition. This model requires no prior knowledge of the illumination conditions and can be used when there is only a single training image per-person. The proposed illumination model separates the effects of illumination over a small area of the face into two components; an additive component modelling the mean illumination and a multiplicative component, modelling the variance within the facial area. Illumination invariant facial recognition is performed in a piecewise manner, by splitting the face image into blocks, then normalizing the illumination within each block based on the new lighting model. The assumptions underlying this novel lighting model have been verified on the YaleB face database. We show that magnitude 2D Fourier features can be used as robust facial descriptors within the new lighting model. Using only a single training image per-person, our new method achieves high (in most cases 100%) identification accuracy on the YaleB, extended YaleB and CMU-PIE face databases.

Thermocouples are one of the most popular devices for temperature measurement due to their robustness, ease of manufacture and installation, and low cost. However, when used in certain harsh environments, for example, in combustion systems and engine exhausts, large wire diameters are required, and consequently the measurement bandwidth is reduced. This article discusses a software compensation technique to address the loss of high frequency fluctuations based on measurements from two thermocouples. In particular, a difference equation sDEd approach is proposed and compared with existing methods both in simulation and on experimental test rig data with constant flow velocity. It is found that the DE algorithm, combined with the use of generalized total least squares for parameter identification, provides better performance in terms of time constant estimation without any a priori assumption on the time constant ratios of the thermocouples.

Although some asthmatic children seem to recover from their asthma, 30–80% develop asthma again in later life. The underlying risk factors are unknown. The hypothesis for this study was that children with apparently outgrown asthma would have underlying airway inflammation. Nonbronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage was performed on normal children (n=35) and children who had wheezed previously (n=35). Eosinophils were raised in the lavage fluid of atopic children who had apparently outgrown asthma (median (interquartile range) 0.36 (0.05–0.74) compared to controls 0.10 (0–0.18), p=0.002). There was no relationship between length of remission and degree of airways eosinophilia. Thus, there is persistent airways inflammation in some children with outgrown asthma and this may be a risk factor for future relapse.

The characterization of thermocouple sensors for temperature measurement in varying-flow environments is a challenging problem. Recently, the authors introduced novel difference-equation-based algorithms that allow in situ characterization of temperature measurement probes consisting of two-thermocouple sensors with differing time constants. In particular, a linear least squares (LS) lambda formulation of the characterization problem, which yields unbiased estimates when identified using generalized total LS, was introduced. These algorithms assume that time constants do not change during operation and are, therefore, appropriate for temperature measurement in homogenous constant-velocity liquid or gas flows. This paper develops an alternative ß-formulation of the characterization problem that has the major advantage of allowing exploitation of a priori knowledge of the ratio of the sensor time constants, thereby facilitating the implementation of computationally efficient algorithms that are less sensitive to measurement noise. A number of variants of the ß-formulation are developed, and appropriate unbiased estimators are identified. Monte Carlo simulation results are used to support the analysis.

In shaded scenes surface features can appear either concave or convex, depending upon the viewers judment about the direction of the prevailing illuminant. If other curvature cues are added to the image this ambiguity can be removed. However, it is not clear to what extent, if any, illuminant positin exerts an influence on the perceived magnitude of surface curvature. Subjects were presented with pairs of spherical surface patches in a curavture matching task. The patches were defined by shading and texture cues. The percevied curvature of a standard patch was measured as a function of light source position. We found a clear effect of light source position on apparent curvature. Perceived curvature decreased as light source tilt increased and as light source slant decreased. We also found that the strength of this effect is determined partly by a surface's reflectance function and partly by the relative weight of the texture cue. When a specular component was added to the stimuli, the effect of light source orientation was weakened. The weight of the texture cue was manipulated by disrupting the regular distribution of texture elements. We found an inverse relationship between the strength of the effecct and the weight of the texture cue: lowering the texture cue weight resulted in an enhancement of the illuminant position effect.

Simultaneous contrast effects have been found across a wide range of visual dimensions. We describe a simultaneous contrast effect - three-dimensional curvature contrast - in which the apparent curvature of a surface defined by shading and texture information is influenced by the curvature of a surrounding surface. The effect is strong and easily measurable. We asked whether the effect depends upon the presence of contrast at the level of the internal representation of surface curvature or whether it could be better explained in terms of local changes in the apparent brightness of regions within the test patches induced by luminance transition at the borders. The experimental results suggest that, whicle these luminance-contrast-induced effects do contribute to the observed changes in perceived curvature, there are additional influences. In particular changes in perceived curvature induced by a pattern of curved patches were eliminated or considerably weakened when the inducing pattern was transformed into a photographic negative, a procedure which disrupts the apparent three-dimensional structure of the surface patches without changing their brightness contrast. This suggests a component of the illusion involves comparisons at the level of representation of surface curvature. The observation that three-dimensional curvature contrast presists when the inducing surfaces are spatially separate from the test surface suggests that shape perception involves global, as well as local, operations.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are inward currents in interstitial cells (IC) isolated from the guinea-pig detrusor and if so, to characterise them using the patch-clamp technique and pharmacological agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique, inward currents were studied in IC enzymatically isolated from the detrusor of the guinea-pig bladder. Currents were evoked by stepping positively from a holding potential of - 80 mV. RESULTS: Outward K+ currents were blocked by Cs+ internal solution to reveal inward currents, which activated at voltages more positive than - 50 mV, peaked at 0 mV, reversed near + 50 mV and were half-maximally activated at - 27 mV. The inward currents showed voltage-dependent inactivation and were half-maximally inactivated at - 36 mV. Fitting the activation and inactivation data with a Boltzmann function revealed a window current between - 40 mV and + 20 mV. The decay of the current evoked at 0 mV could be fitted with a single exponential with a mean time-constant of 88 ms. Replacing external Ca2+ with Ba2+ significantly increased this to 344 ms. The current amplitude was augmented by Ba2+, and by Bay K 8644. Inward currents were significantly reduced by 1 microm nifedipine, across the voltage range, but the blockade was more effective on the current evoked at 0 mV than that evoked by a step to - 20 mV, perhaps indicating voltage-dependence of the action of nifedipine or another component of inward current. Increasing the concentration of the drug to 10 microm caused no further significant reduction either at 0 mV or at -20 mV. However, in the presence of 1 microm nifedipine the latter current was significantly reduced by 100 microm Ni2+. Both currents were significantly reduced in Ca2+-free solution. CONCLUSIONS: IC from the guinea-pig detrusor possess inward currents with typical characteristics of L-type Ca2+ current. They also have a component of inward Ca2+ current, which was resistant to nifedipine, but sensitive to Ni2+. Further work is needed to characterise the latter conductance. We present an analysis of interstellar NaI (lambda(air) = 3302.37 and 3302.98 angstrom), TiII (lambda(air) = 3383.76 angstrom) and CaII K (lambda(air) = 3933.66 angstrom) absorption features for 74 sightlines towards O- and B-type stars in the Galactic disc. The data were obtained from the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph Paranal Observatory Project, at a spectral resolution of 3.75 km s(-1) and with mean signal-to-noise ratios per pixel of 260, 300 and 430 for the NaI, TiII and CaII observations, respectively. Interstellar features were detected in all but one of the TiII sightlines and all of the CaII sightlines. The dependence of the column density of these three species with distance, height relative to the Galactic plane, HI column density, reddening and depletion relative to the solar abundance has been investigated. We also examine the accuracy of using the NaI column density as an indicator of that for HI. In general, we find similar strong correlations for both Ti and Ca, and weaker correlations for Na. Our results confirm the general belief that Ti and Ca occur in the same regions of the interstellar medium ( ISM) and also that the TiII/CaII ratio is constant over all parameters. We hence conclude that the absorption properties of Ti and Ca are essentially constant under the general ISM conditions of the Galactic disc.

Thin film capacitor structures in which the dielectric is composed of superlattices of the relaxors [0.2Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O- 3-0.8BaTiO(3)] and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Superlattice wavelength (Lambda) was varied between similar to3 and similar to 600 nm, and dielectric properties were investigated as a function of Lambda. Progressive enhancement of the dielectric constant was observed on decreasing Lambda, and, in contrast to previous work, this was not associated with the onset of Maxwell-Wagner behavior. Polarization measurements as a function of temperature suggested that the observed enhancement in dielectric constant was associated with the onset of a coupled response. The superlattice wavelength (Lambda =20 nm) at which coupled functional behavior became apparent is comparable to that found in literature for the onset of coupled structural behavior (between Lambda =5 nm and Lambda =10 nm).
